My Favorite Books of All Time

A few times recently, I have placed a book I have read “Into my top ten” after reviewing them.  I’ve been thinking that over, trying to figure out just what those top ten are.

To be completely honest, until just recently I have not been an avid reader.  It is not that I didn’t enjoy reading… I just didn’t have time.  When I was younger I used to always read before I went to bed, but in later years that just seemed to dwindle away.  Yes, I did still read, but it would take months for me to finish a book.

Now that I am reading again, I am discovering great new writers to challenge my older classics, although my top spots are still pretty firm.

So the books in my list are a mix of things I read when I was in high school and college, and those I’ve read in the last year.  My top ten list of novels I’ve ever read:

10. Song of Solomon, Toni Morrison – This is “so not my style”, but this book resonated with me.  This is a case of being forced to read something for a college course, and having it haunt you for a long time.

9. The P.U.R.E, Claire Gillian – I don’t think it was so much the story in this one.  Mysteries, as a rule, bore me, but the writing was so dern awesome I was drawn in.  I have notes typed all over my copy.  Really good.

8. Eragon, Christopher Paolini – Okay, don’t laugh.  I really enjoyed this book for the sheer fun of storytelling.  I read it before I started beta-reading and dissecting novels, and I’m glad I did, because I’m sure I would look at it differently if I read it today.  Despite a talking dragon, which I usually gag over, this was a great light-hearted read for me.

7. Dragons Lance Series – I can’t pick out just one.  I always bought them in boxes sets.  I ate these for lunch daily.  It’s probably not good that I can’t remember what any of them were about, but I would finish a book, and scramble for another.  I always got a kick out of the character with no fear and no common sense that always got into trouble.  Great fun.

6. The Glass Man, Jocelyn Adams – Yeah, I have two at #6.  I kept switching these back and forth for different reasons, so I’m giving them both the #6 slot.  Great action – and one of the best villians I’ve read in a long time.  I’d love to see a novel just about him.

6. Crux, Julie Reece – See my recent review.  The only thing better than a good action movie is a good action book with characters you can relate to.

4. Dragon Riders of Pern, Mercedes Lackey – What’s better than dragons?  Dragons on other planets!  What an awesome concept.

3. The Great Hunt, Robert Jordan – The second in the Wheel of Time series, and the first RJ book I ever read.  I was immediately hooked on his style.

2. Mists of Avalon – I had to read this in college, and I couldn’t put it down.  I’m a King Arthur junkie, but this was the first time (for me) to see the story from the women’s perspective. It blew me away.

1. Vertical Run by Joseph R. Garber – This is a book that would have been a great Bruce Willis movie in the Die Hard Era.  This guy goes to work one day and his boss tries to kill him.  So he runs downstairs and the mailman tries to kill him, and then his neighbor and on and on.  He ends up trapped in a building, running from people.  The fun comes in the form of him being a former special agent of some kind, so he knows how to take all these people out.  Unfortunately, some of these hunters are people he cares about.  A huge thrill ride, despite one stupid element in the final action scene.  I’ve never read anything this intense, and I LOVED it.

So what’s the greatest novel you’ve ever read?

What the… Oh My Gosh, Oh No, Oh Crap, and whatever…

Final edits can be maddening, can’t they? As I go through my list of overused words, I always find new things that make me giggle.

My current giggle-a-thon is coming in the form of teenage explicatives.  They sound perfectly right in-context. “Oh my gosh, you are not going to do that!”

Buy when I ran a search on “Oh” and my screen lit up with pretty highlights—I realized how many of my main character’s dialog lines start with the word “Oh”.  It’s funny really.

The good thing about using the search feature to ferret out these little problem is you can look at each instance outside of the frame of the narrative.  It’s much easier to edit when you are not getting “caught up” in the story.

So, at the moment I am in final edits for Fire in the Woods, and I am removing a good portion of the “Oh my gosh”, “Oh my God”, “Oh crap,” and of course, the every-so intrusive “umm”.

Of course, I am leaving in a few for color, but I’m trying to cut my repetition down to once every ten pages or more. (Quite a feat at times.)

How do you search and destroy over-used words and phrases?

Write a Story with Me # 36 – Daddy wake up! by Jennifer M. Eaton

I’m bringing it back to the battle string this week, ’cause that’s where the party’s at!  Let’s rock!

36 – Jennifer M. Eaton – “Daddy, wake up!”

Yoran lulled in and out of consciousness.  Echoing blasts of battle and the throttling of wind pummeled his mind.

“Daddy, Daddy wake up.” Marci’s voice seeped into his internal chaos.

Oh! What a foul ogre a mind could be, taunting him with the voice of his beloved daughter, when he knew she was lost.  The vision of meek, weary Marci falling to her death grated against his soul, tearing and ripping to the point of insanity.

“Daddy!”

Yoran blinked twice.  His eyes stung, accosted by the sunlight shining from above.  Heaven?  Was this the great light he was to travel to?

A dark figure blotted out the sun, a form not unlike a small girl.  “Daddy, can you hear me?”  Tiny finger grabbed his shoulders, and his body shook.  “Daddy, can you feel me?”

A larger figure passed through his vision, and his face stung as a cold hand slapped him nearly off the table.

“Let’s see if he felt that.” The angry woman’s voice sliced into his heart–the same voice he’d heard pluck him from the sky.

“Sian?” His raspy voice barely sputtered the name.  His eyes focused, and she re-folded her arms, her eyes hard and glaring, just as they had been the last time he woke. She was really there.  This wasn’t a dream.

Mustering all his energy, he pulled himself to a sitting position.  His head pounded as he reached out to his eldest daughter.

Sian spat on the floor beside him.  “Save your strength, Father.  You’re going to need it.”

All right.  Call me crazy… but I don’t have anything else to post… So I am posting the first 250 words of my new novel which is the sequel to LAST WINTER RED from the Make Believe Anthology.

I just wrote this about three hours ago, and it has not been proofed.

Yeah.  I’m nuts.

What I’m looking for is world-building.  Can you feel the world? There is no scenery yet.  What would you like to see in this scene to help you visualize?

This is a sequel.  For those of you who have read LAST WINTER RED: Does this draw you right back into that world?

“It’s not every day a man gets to meet his wife. You should be excited.”

Henry smoothed the red cuffs accenting his tapered black shirt.  “I am, Mother. But this is the most important day of my life. I’m a little nervous.”

“Pish.  Today you are just getting married.  Nine months from now, when you validate yourself with your first child—that will be the most important day of your life.” She brushed non-existent lint from his shoulders.

“Of course mother.” Henry held perfect, stiff posture as his mother moved around him, her long red skirt shifting at her ankles as she straightened every seam.

“There.” She stepped back, smiling.  “As perfect as any young Red could be—and so handsome.”

“I’m sure I’m no more handsome than any other, mother.”

She shook her head.  “Nonsense.  You are ten times the Red of any of your siblings.  You’ll be wed highly.  I guarantee it.”

She picked up a pitcher from the table and poured two glasses of water.

“Were you frightened, Mother, on your wedding day?”

“Frightened? No, of course not.  Excited was more the word.  This is the day all Reds are born for—to finally have the opportunity to join society, to add your distinction to the world.  Your father and I validated ourselves on our wedding day, you know.”

Henry bit back his laugh.  “Yes, Ma’am, you’ve told us all many times.”

She handed him a glass.  “None of your siblings have granted our family the prestige of a wedding day conception.  I look forward to good news tomorrow morning.”

“I will do my best, Mother.” He bowed his head.

My First Rejection Letter

Okay, it had to happen sooner or later. After three publications, I’ve finally received the inevitable “slap” of a rejection.  When I opened it and started reading, the email could have gone both ways, and then it slipped into…

“We are no longer able to reply to each query individually, but please be assured we consider every submission very carefully.  Unfortunately, your manuscript is not a good fit for us at this time.”

Okay, well, it was a “nice” rejection.  They didn’t say it stunk. They even asked to keep them in mind for my next project (yeah, it’s a form letter, but it was nice, and I will still keep them in mind.  They are a great publisher.)

But…

I understand what people talk about now.  Since this was an all-encompassing form letter, I have no idea WHY it was rejected.  In fact, I don’t even know if they got past the query.

***I don’t know***

Are they glutted with Paranormal Romance right now?  I don’t know.

Was the story too short? I don’t know.

Have they seen the plot before?  I don’t know.

Was in not “Romancy” enough? I don’t know.

Did they not see the value of it as a continuing series? I don’t know.

Did they laugh at my inadequacy? I don’t know.

Honestly, when I first read it, I was not disappointed, even though I was really interested in that publisher.  My reaction was more like.  “Oh, okay, I’ll just look somewhere else”

But then those questions above started sinking in. I started questioning myself.

After a little while though, I dusted myself off.  I like the story, and I have it out at a few other publishers as well.  Someone will like it.

But while I’m waiting, I don’t want my cute little egg sitting in one basket.  I’m actively seeking a few more publishers.  One that I’ve found, I actually think I like MORE that my first pick.

We’ll see how it goes.  No tears, no disappointment, just onward and upward.

It’s just the business, right?

How do you feel about “form” rejections?

A temporary goodbye to the Little Blue Lady from Mars

PKO_Alien 3 0003387You are going to shove me into your hard drive and never look at me again.

No, I’m not!

I promise!

Alien Smile CloseBut I’m a rehabilitated alien!

I made cookies last week and everything!

It’s not that.  Your interviews have been great. Hundreds of people have clicked on over to read them. I’ve gotten a great response—even when you’ve been abrasive, which is a bit odd.

PKO_Alien 3 0003387Then what’s the problem?

.

Time is the problem.

Did you know it takes a few hours to do one of those interviews?

PKO_Alien 3 0003387Ha!  You’re not doing anything.  I’m doing all the work.

You’re just whining and complaining in the background.

Yes, but as much as I love you,

there is a little work involved in bringing you to life.

PKO_Alien 3 0003387So?

.

Well, I’ve got writing to do, you know.  I’m starting the sequel to Last Winter Red this weekend, and I have three books out to query now, and Fire in the Woods will be going to query in a few weeks.

Alien Huh CloseThey are more important than me?

Hmm. At the moment, yes, they are.  But listen, I promise to set up an interview for you at least once a month.  Twice once I get a little more acclimated to my new schedule, okay?

PKO_Alien 3 0003387[Sigh]

I guess I really don’t have a choice, do I?

Sorry.

.

PKO_Alien 3 0003387I’ll miss you.

.

I’ll miss you too.

But I’ll see you in a few weeks, I promise.

Free_Fridays!

Alien SmileOkay.

How about for the last Free Friday for a while, we give away a copy of “Make Believe”.

Great!  That would be awesome.

You know, the reviews for my story Last Winter Red in this anthology have been “off the charts crazy” good!  And several people have asked about more from the Last Winter Red world.

PKO_Alien 3 0003387Well, I’m happy for you, but not happy that writing the sequel means I have to go back into the hard drive.

Hey, I will keep my promise.

I even have an awesome author all lined up for April.

PKO_Alien 3 0003387All Right.

Make Believe

Please bid the Little Blue Lady goodbye for a few weeks, and everyone commenting below will be in the running for an ebook copy (your choice of format) of the “Make Believe” anthology including my story LAST WINTER RED.

The Struggle Continues – Putting the plans into action – Our Journey with the Total Transformation #10

Last week I tried something new to get my youngest and middle child to sleep.  My 9 year old went to bed right away.  My youngest, literally seconds after agreeing to the new incentive, started screaming about it.  I did what I needed to do.  I gave the “good” mark to the older child, and wrote “No” next to my younger child’s name.  The next morning, I received a call at work from my husband… My youngest had checked the chart and saw “no” next to his name.  I explained that this was the “First Time Club” and in order to win, you needed to go to bed the first time asked, no exception.  (This is what he agreed to seconds before flipping out when I let them know it was bedtime)  He was not happy, but the really good thing is he DID NOT FLIP OUT.

Over the weekend, when they would have received the “reward”, there was friction.

“But I was good last night”.

Oh!  It’s so hard when they throw the truth at you.  Deep breath.  “Yes, you were good last night, but you need to go to bed five nights in a row to earn the reward of slumber parties on the weekend.”

Again, the negotiator in me wanted to give in, because he was good… but I stuck to my guns… and neither of us was happy.  Hopefully though, what I just taught him is that I will NOT negotiate and give in if he’s only good one day.  He needs to be good all the time… Let’s see how it goes.

Follow-up;  We received a note from school last night that Littlest Dude has the “opportunity” for remedial reading instruction after school a few days a week.  I’m okay with it.  I’m just sad because I thought he was getting better.  How can a kid that gets 100% on his spelling tests need remedial reading?  I guess I need to find time at night to read to him more. ERGH.  So hard to find enough time to do everything you need to do.

Follow-up#2: Littlest Dude has to sit at the detention table for the rest of the week at lunch because they asked him to sit down three times.  Ugh.  How can you coach your kid when you are not there to use the program with him? (And his teacher is not at lunch either) His Dad did the eight step with him when he got home.  I hope Little Dude understands.

Lesson 7:  How to stop it before it starts:  Yes PLEASE!  I need some wisdom here!

This gives a set of steps and actions to help your child to NOT have a problem.  The scary thing is, this is something I can teach him, and then he has to do it on his own.  I am not always going to be there when a friend is mean to him.  I am not always going to be there when he wants to run in the cafeteria.  This part is HIS.

He was excited to sit down and do this, but by the second question he was over it, and started to act out a bit.  I decided to make it more fun by acting out his most recent “problem” the way it happened first, and then we worked on how he could have managed it better.  We ended up giggling about it, and practicing the “right way” again.  Hopefully, it will work.

It’s up to you now, Littlest Dude.

Susan Rocan fills in a little space that was left hanging.  Take it away, Susan!

35 – Susan Roebuck – Battle string – in the sky – fills space before #29

Janosc’s squadron dodged cumulus clouds, flying through the chaos.

They observed Marci’s ship and the Establishment shuttle that thought it was invisible. Wing-commander Briss drew level with Janosc.

“Captain,” he said, “The old ship is off course, it’s entering the Atom Stream and getting too close to the Establishment shuttle which is equipped with a lock-on and destroy system in such cases.”

No sooner were the words out of his mouth than the Shuttle opened fire.

“Fangs out!” Janosc cried, pointing his sword downwards. “Dog-fight.”

It was too late – the blast had broken Marci’s ship apart. “Idiotic shuttle. Inexperienced…” To his horror, Marci’s bed with Bethany hanging on for dear life was heading for the ocean. Magic was the only option. He pulled the speaker on his helmet closer and ordered his squadron: “Bubble. Bubble. Marci and bed. Repeat. Marci and bed. Get her to the Precipice and the Portal home, boys.”

As the force of their combined magic curved downwards, Janosc cursed. “Damn cones!” He should’ve brought more experienced magicians with him; apart from Briss they were greenhorns. “Too much magic,” he cried.

A rainbow-colored bubble formed around Marci’s bed, but extended onwards encompassing Yoran’s falling body as well. And that wasn’t all. “It’s caught the Establishment ship too! Now they’ll all be transported to the mystic portal. Can it get worse?”

Briss’s calm voice spoke in his ear. “Black object, Captain, speeding our way. Four o’clock. Looks like someone on a broomstick.”

Janosc closed his eyes. That’s all he needed. Mother.

Another Publisher Bites the Dust

It’s one of the risks we take as authors when we put our work out there, especially with one of the smaller publishing houses.  A week ago, Still Moments Publishing closed for submissions “due to the que being full”.

Hmmm.  Odd, huh?

Yesterday, it was announced that Still Moments Publishing is being absorbed by another publisher.  Which one, I don’t know yet.

Do I regret my decision to go with them?  Not at all.  I learned a lot about Romance Writing through them.  The experience with my editors was overwhelmingly positive, and my writing grew because of it.  The mild inconvenience I am experiencing now is a small price to pay for growing as a writer.

The transition has been as painless as possible.  Still Moments has been very good about it.  I already have my rights back, and am seeking a new publisher.  I wish everyone at Still Moments the best in their future endeavors.

So, if you’ve been thinking of picking up a copy of “Jack and Jill”, or “For the Love of Christmas”, you might want to do so sooner than later.  Most Still Moments titles will start disappearing in the next few days.

Alien Zig Zag

PKO_Alien 3 0003387Jennifer’s not here this week, so I don’t have to worry about her being all squishy with these authors.  Finally I get to do an interview without her complaining!  Let’s see who’s here [opens the door]

Hi!

I’m Katie Salidas.

I’m here for the cooking show.

PKO_Alien 3 0003387Cooking show?

.

Yep.

Where’s your kitchen?

PKO_Alien 3 0003387Umm, It’s Jennifer Eaton’s kitchen actually,

and it’s over there.

Okay.

I’ll just make myself at home.

PKO_Alien 3 0003387What’s with the bowls and pans?

Why’d you just turn on the oven?

Well, we’re going to cook,

aren’t we?

PKO_Alien 3 0003387Cook? What’s going on?

Who are you anyway?

Who am I? Oh no one really, just a small wallflower of a writer who pens the most realistic and gritty urban fantasy vampires. I don’t do sparkles, and I don’t do vegetarian vampires. What I do “do” is emotion, struggle, pain, and ultimately overcoming the obstacles. I also do cookies.

Alien Huh CloseCookies?

Wait a minute.

Actually, we need to wait about five more minutes for the oven to preheat, but there’s lots to do while we’re waiting.  But you know that, right? You’re a cooking show host.

PKO_Alien 3 0003387The last thing I actually cooked was a novel that I didn’t like.

I blew it up.

Oh!  I love symbolic imagery.

I blew up an idea yesterday.  Storyboarded it and everything.

Alien Huh CloseUmm

What?

Okay, First we have to combine the sugar, flour, baking soda and salt into a bowl.  Can you start whisking that for me?

PKO_Alien 3 0003387Ahhh, I guess.

This thing looks just like a miniature ray gun.

Be careful there.  You don’t want to spill it.

Funny, you act like you’ve never whisked baking ingredients before.

PKO_Alien 3 0003387Call it my tragic flaw

.

That’s okay.  In my book Immortalis Carpe Noctem, my My Main character is flawed, that’s for sure, but who among us isn’t? She’s real, she young, and has a lot to learn. And as the series progresses you’ll learn right along with her.

PKO_Alien 3 0003387Can she show me how to bake?

.

No silly. That’s what I’m here for.

Now let’s get those sugars mixed up.

PKO_Alien 3 0003387With the whisky thingy?

.

Nope.  Use your hands.

Get out all the lumps.

PKO_Alien 3 0003387Wait!

What’s that?

Err, a hand mixer.

We need to start beating the ingredients.

Alien Huh CloseWhat did the ingredients do?

What would you beat them?

I like you you’re funny.

Let’s get the rest of these ingredients in here

Alien Huh CloseAre you sure you know what you’re doing?

This looks like a lump of Martian calowog dung.

I sure do know what I’m doing!  I also know how to write books.  Immortalis Carpe Noctem has sold over 10,000 copies.

It’s almost as good as making cookies!

PKO_Alien 3 0003387I’m not so sure you are good at making cookies.

How can I be sure your book is any good?

I’ve got positive reviews on every site from Goodreads to Nook! I know this book is good and I want more readers to find it as well!

Alien Huh CloseReally?  But isn’t this book about vampires?

It’s so overdone.  It seems like everyone is becoming a vampire these days.

Becoming a vampire is easy. Living with the condition…that’s the hard part.

Now we need to form this into a roll.  Can you do that?

Alien SmileLike this?

.

Perfect!

Now we need to refrigerate it for forty-five minutes.

Alien SmileWhile we wait,

tell me more about your book.

Newbie vampire Alyssa never asked for this life, but now it’s all she has. Rescued from death by Lysander, the aloof and sexy leader of the Peregrinus vampire clan, she’s barely cut her teeth before she becomes a target.

Kallisto, an ancient and vindictive vampire queen – and Lysander’s old mate – wants nothing less than final death for her former lover and his new toy. She’s not above letting the Acta Sanctorum, and its greatest vampire hunter, Santino, know exactly where the clan can be found.

With no time to mourn her old life, Alyssa’s survival depends on her new family. She will have to stand alongside Lysander and fight against two enemies who will stop at nothing to destroy them.

Alien SmileWow!

That actually sounds pretty cool!

It is very cool.  And so is our dough.

Now we need to cut this into cookies four inches thick

Alien SmileLike this?

And spread them on the pan, right?

Yes. Hey, you don’t run a cooking show for nothing, you are a natural at this.

Now we bake 12 to 14 minutes.

Alien SmileSo tell me.

When you’re not baking, do you ever explode things?

In real life, sadly, no. But I have a friend who does that kind of thing for a living. He is an inspiration behind one of the characters in my Immortalis series and he’s also my weapons consultant (so my writing is always accurate where that is concerned.)

Alien SmileOh!

Has he ever taken over the world?

You know, taking over the world sounds all well and good, but then there is the responsibility of actually “ruling” the world. That sounds too much like work to me. LoL.

Alien SmileNo.  No work.

I’d just let Jennifer M. Eaton take care of all the hard stuff.

Speaking of hard stuff, we’ve made quite a mess.

Do you have a clean-up crew?

Alien SmileYep. The annoying whiney chick with the curly hair who owns this place.

She’ll clean it up.

Great!

Let’s get these off the pan and onto a cooling rack.

Alien SmileOops.  I squished one.

Sorry

That’s okay.  There’s plenty more.

Now what we’re going to do is goob a little frosting between these cookies.

Alien SmileOh!

They look like spaceships!

They do, don’t they?

You can even put a little blue food coloring in the frosting so it will match your hair.

Alien SmileMmmmmm!

These are delicious!

If you like these, you should try my book.

It’s even better!

Alien SmileYes!  We must all read Katie Salidas’s book!
