Write a Story with Me # 41 with Vanessa Chapman

Vanessa Chapman makes this plot even thicker this week.  What’s going on????

 41- Vanessa-Jane Chapman

Morath came to a stop a few feet in front of the building. “I need you to do something for me Tangle,” she said.

“Yes of course Grandmo…I mean, Queen…I mean Queen Gran…oh dear.” He bowed his head and bit his lip. Morath smiled and knelt down. She took his chin gently in her hand and lifted it to look warmly into his vibrant blue eyes.  He met her gaze, and felt the color rising in his cheeks.

“My child,” said Morath. “It matters not what you call me, it matters only what is in your heart. Do you understand?” She kissed him tenderly on the forehead. Tangle wasn’t sure he did understand, but he nodded anyway. “Before I go into the building,” she said. “I need you to take a message in for me. Can you do that?” He nodded. Morath continued. “The message can only be given to Yoran, and you must give it directly to him yourself Tangle. That is most important. Can I trust you to do that?” Tangle nodded again.

“What is the message Queen Grandmother?” he asked. Morath looked around cautiously before leaning forward to whisper into Tangle’s ear.

“The sacred Gleaming Tree yields its leaves only to those who are ready to receive its power,” she said. “Repeat it exactly like that. Yoran will understand.”

“But I don’t,” said Tangle.

“No,” said Morath. “But one day you will. Now go in please, I will wait here. When you have delivered the message to Yoran, and only to Yoran, come back and tell me, and then I will enter alone.”

When you are lucky enough to have choices. Stuff to thing about

When searching for a publisher, many authors target who they want, but settle for who will publish them.  Right?  This week, I found myself in the thrilling and cushy position of having a choice after being offered multiple contracts for Paper Wishes.

What’s Paper Wishes?  Ha!  I’m glad you asked!  Paper Wishes is the re-envisioning of Jack and Jill Volume One.

As most of you know, Still Moments Publishing was purchased by another publishing house on March 15, and Jack and Jill was not one of the titles automatically shifted under their fold.

This was not a huge surprise to me, as Jack and Jill was not traditional Romance.  The book really was a better fit for Christian Romance, so the minute I got my rights back, I began querying Christian Publishers.

Now – should this happen to anyone else, be prepared because the greater percentage of publishers out there (at least in Christian) DO NOT WANT previously published work.  This surprised me at first.  I had the nicest discussion with a really big house that liked my work, but had to decline because it had been published too recently.

But they were really a long shot anyway… and not so much on my radar.  I was mainly focused in on one publisher that I contacted the day Still Moments made the announcement.  I spoke with this publisher, explained my predicament, and we chatted about the publishing business in general for a while before I had even sent them my work.  We were very much on the same page, so I bit my nails as I sent them my submission, and to a few other houses as well.

Less than a week later, I had two contract offers, and a third arrived last night. I have the luxury of matching up what each publisher has to offer, and also weighing the changes each publisher wants. (Yes, there will be changes)

Requested Changes:

1.        Two of them want the cursing removed – and for anyone who has read my work, I really don’t curse.  But what I WILL have to remove is dernit, darn, gosh, Hell, heck … anything even remotely looking like an explicative.

2.       I will need to tone down the make-out scene to bring it more within the boundaries of Christian novels.

3.       One of the publishers wants me to change it from First Person to Third Person.

So I am weighing the required changes alongside royalties, distribution, foreign rights, cover design, print rights and overall package offered.

It’s wonderful place to be, and I hope to be making an announcement shortly.

Review of “The Glass Man” by Jocelyn Adams

Strap yourself in.  It’s going to be a bumpy ride.

I actually finished this book last year, and it was in my top five reads for 2012.  I never got around to reviewing it, so here’s a quick overview.

My opinion? I want to be Jocelyn Adams when I grow up.  Well, not completely, but I would love to have the “flow” that her writing style has.  She is really “readable”.

Have you ever read a great book, but it was easy to put it down?  Well, Glass Man is a great book that your husband has to pry out of your hands to make sure you go to bed at night… I call that “flow” because there is no hard break in the writing… as a reader, you just keep reading without knowing what’s going on.

Glassman is a story about a girl with supernatural powers and has no idea why she has these powers.  She is being chased by “The Glass Man” – a man who killed her entire family when she was young, and has been hunting her ever since.  Yep, this is one of my favorite tropes – the CHASE NOVEL.  Wahoo!  Action abounds!

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel from beginning to end, with a few very minor nit-picks.

Nit Picks:

#1 is the language. Yeah, yeah, stamp me a prude, but I cannot relate to a heroine with a gutter mouth.  I’ve said before, using the word sh*t or even the F-bomb if you fall and hurt yourself is okay.  It’s natural.  But riddling the dialog with profanity bothers me.  I have to subtract a star for this.

#2 is that the main character is wearing a ridiculous outfit for a long time during the climax near the end of the story. Why Why Why? Is all I have to ask.  The narrative, which is otherwise outstanding, high energy and tense, is challenged, and at times ruined by the dumb outfit that the bad guy made her wear. I just don’t know where the author was going with that.  Maybe it was supposed to be comic relief, or maybe titillation… for me, it just made me roll my eyes.  So for this, I need to subtract another star.

Now let’s chat for a second about the character of the Glass Man.

Best Villain I have ever read

 Like EVER

Wanna lesson on how to write a villain?  Pick up Glass Man.  I mean DANG.  I actually found myself rooting for him most of the time.  He is just so darn bad you have to love him… and I just love a hot sexy villain.  He’s not bad… he’s doing the right thing!  Who cares if everyone else thinks he’s a psychopath?????

Pure brilliance on the villain, and I would LOVE to see a prequel that was based solely on his character.  There is a mention of an earlier event with the MC of this story where the villain actually “won”.  I would LOVE to see that made into a book.  Let’s cheer on that bad guy. Yahooooo!

Okay, so, if you didn’t catch my enthusiasm, I was trying to say that the villain was awesome, and for him alone, I will give this book an extra star.

So that’s a total of four stars for the Glass Man.  If you like paranormal stories, and can get in to a chase novel with a dash of romance and two supernatural being kicking the crud out of each other, you will just LOVE this.

Write a Story with Me # 40 – With a Clap of the Hands – by Norah Jansen

Norah Jansen debuts to Write a Story with Me and turns a corner and starts heading our two strings back together again.  Take it away, Norah!

40- Norah Jansen – With a clap of the hands

Janelle clapped her hands together and a tall fair haired boy dressed in a multitude of colours appeared at her side.

“This is your eldest grandson. Tangle. Marci’s family is here in the Kingdom and Tangle will take you to them.”

Tangle smiled shyly at Morath. He had heard about his grandmother, the great Queen of the Faeries, but never thought he would actually meet her. Now he was going to be her guide and pride swelled in his chest under her gentle gaze. He hoped all his friends would see him as he led their Queen through the streets of Argot.

Morath felt her heart squeeze as she watched Janelle with her smaller children. They were all so beautiful and Morath had missed out on seeing them being born and growing up. Something else to hold against the humans if she dared to let herself go down that path. This wasn’t the time for hatred; there was a sliver of a chance that what had started out as a potential disaster for her people could be a turning point for both humans and Fae.

She nodded to Tangle to proceed and with a swift backward glance at Janelle, Morath followed her grandson through the streets of Argot. Not many of her people (and none of Tangle’s friends) were around to see their procession but those that were bowed low before racing away to spread the news of their Queen’s return.

Tangle pointed ahead to the large building in the middle of the square. Morath’s ears twitched with apprehension as they approached. This wasn’t the first time a human had been held in this building. She hoped the outcome would be different this time.

Here we have the revised second page of my new novel Optimal Red, which is the sequel to LAST WINTER RED from the Make Believe Anthology.

I added a little imagery since last posting it.  Does it help to pull you deeper into Henry’s world?

swish swivel squiggle 2

Henry took a deep breath and took in the room around him. The unembellished gray walls had always provided a sense of comfort and security. The thought of leaving this safe haven sent a whisper of butterflies through his stomach.  How long would it be before he would see this room again, before he’d see his mother and siblings again?  Weeks? Months?

A stiff jerk tested his posture as his mother gave a final tug on his shirt.  “There.  Your wife will be pleased.”

He brushed his lips against her forehead.  “I will make you proud, mother.”

She nodded, walking him to the door.  “Be sure that you do.”

The finality of leaving his childhood home tingled in the air as the door slid shut behind him. Longs days of carefully structured lessons and exercise had prepared him for this day. But fear, rather than excitement had greeted him as first light woke him this morning.

Where would he live? Would his wife be pleased with him? What would he say when they were introduced? He rubbed his temples and steadied himself. His questions could only be answered by living the life he’d been born for.

The stark gray hallway echoed with his solitary footsteps.  Any other day he would have walked toward the right, to the common rooms and study areas.  Only once before had he taken the left passage, walking the long, seldom-traveled hallway that lead to the lower regions of Terra.  He’d accompanied his father that day, seeing him off to his new assignment in the agricultural center.  Henry had bubbled with excitement, not knowing that his father would never return.

Luckily for the family, his father had the chance to validate himself eight times before his death.  While hardly a large family, eight children, all rated Red, was still an agreeable showing for the council.

Business cards that say what you really think!

Business cards that everyone wishes they had. How much fun could you have with these?

How many times have I wanted to tell someone off for their pi$$-poor parking? About a zillion times. But it always seemed kind of childish to sit in my car, for potentially hours, waiting to give someone a piece of my mind. Not to mention, there are a lot of crazies out there. How do I know that this person isn’t a poor parker due in large part to their being a card-carrying, knife-wielding psychopath?

***[Reblogged by permission from Natalie Hartford]***

Exactly! Play it safe Natalie. Walk away.

And I do.

But not without wishing, praying, and wanting so badly to say my piece!

And what about the dude that near knocked me over last week at the card store. His body odor was more than just foul…it was an assault! But…what do you say?!?! I mean…he was walking around apparently oblivious to the scent…as if he was fine with it when it was clear no one else was.

Don’t even get me started on one of my gal pals who is being such a dumba** right now dating a total douche bag and then complaining about it incessantly (I hope she isn’t reading my blog…)? I mean, I can only be outraged on her behalf the first 85 times. At some point, she stays and it’s on her. But how do you look a pal in the face and say “seriously…you are being an idiot!” without coming off as a total jerk?

Shikes…maybe I am just a jerk?!?! Anyway….

Or how about that snotty sales clerk? I thought she was getting paid to answer questions but by her twisted eye and head reaction, it seems it was insensitive of me to interrupt her text-fest.

Or the dismissive waitress who likely spit in my soup when I asked that it be reheated. Heaven forbid I want my tomato soup steamy?! Ya’d have thought I asked her to rebuild the pyramids!

I know I am not alone. I know y’all out there wanna let er’ fly sometimes!

I mean not without just cause. But for those special, ever singular, blood-pressure raising, steam-coming-out-of-ears moments!

Well…I found the perfect solution for us to keep it classy while still putting it all out there. Anonymously at that (if we so wish)!

Say hello to my new BFF, offensive business cards.

They say it all when I can’t! I can leave one discreetly on the parking pissant’s window…slip it on the sly into the pocket of the BO man.

Or hey, I could be bold and just pass them out…straight up…to the gal pal, the snotty sales clerk and the dismissive waitress. “Here’s a card…special…for you!” Triple Z SNAP! BAM!

With 100 cards and 8 different types perfect for common, everyday situation insult, I’ll be set. I mean…with cards like:

  • You Suck At Parking
  • You Smell Like Shit
  • Your Tattoos Are Retarded
  • Your Service Sucks
  • You’re Ugly As F**k
  • Santa Isn’t Real
  • You’re An Idiot

I’ll be letting er’ fly all over the place!

I’ll be known as the offensive, card-carrying, urban redneck version of Bill Engvall. You know, the stand-up comedian who hates stupid people and has the hilarious skits “here’s your sign.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There I’ll be…”Here’s your card…
The fun I could have with these….be the best $15 I’d spend in ages!
Tell me about a time you could have used one of these offensive business cards? Come on…no one will think less of you here! Or…if you could customize them, what would be your most used offensive business card and why? Come on…share the wealth…
It’s Twisted Tuesday and that means it’s time to enjoy a smile, giggle or laugh…here’s hoping I’ve provided it in spades…enjoy!
The Little Blue Lady from Mars takes on a little Rock Star Romance
Free_Fridays!
PKO_Alien 3 0003387I feel like I’ve been gone forever.
.
You should have treated it like a vacation.
Did you have time to relax?
PKO_Alien 3 0003387Relax? I did nothing but relax.
I actually did NOTHING. It was boring.
Well, now you are fresh and ready to do a brand new interview.
Are you ready to get started?
PKO_Alien 3 0003387Totally.
Who’s here today?
Nicky Wells is here. [opens door]
Hi, Nicky!
Alien Huh CloseWhat’s with all the sparkles?
Who does this lady think she is?
What, you haven’t heard about me? Where have you been ~ in outer space? Everybody has heard about the Rock Star Romance Trilogy, and today, I want to shout about the release of the second book, Sophie’s Run.
Oh, and I’m here to give away two e-books.
Alien Huh CloseYou want to give away TWO books?  Getting pretty high and mighty there, aren’t you? You need to get through me before anything gets given to anyone.  You hear?
Umm, Okay.
Well, what do I have to do?
PKO_Alien 3 0003387Convince me your sappy Earthling book
is good enough for people to read.
LOL, where to start? Put simply, my brand of romance rocks your world. You’ll feel the tremors even if you happen to be stuck in outer space. Yeah, Little Blue Lady, just like you… Sophie’s Run has glitz, glamour, intrigue, romance, betrayal, travel and lots of food, not to mention a gorgeous rock star and a dashing male nurse. I mean, come on ~ what more do you want?
Alien SmileYou think I have glitz and glamour?
Really?
Okay, so tell me more, what would make someone want to read this little ditty?
With all the above ingredients, why wouldn’t they? But if you want the official sales spiel… well, if you like rock music, celebrities, romance and happy endings, then Sophie’s Run is a must-read. If you’ve ever dreamed of doing something completely crazy with your life, then Sophie’s Run is a must read.
PKO_Alien 3 0003387Hmmm.  I like music, but if I haven’t read Sophie’s Turn,
would I want to read Sophie’s Run?
Obviously if you’ve already read Sophie’s Turn, you will want to find out what happens next. I should say that you don’t have to have read Sophie’s Turn to enjoy Sophie’s Run! While it is the second book in a Trilogy, and can totally and 100 per cent stand on its own.
PKO_Alien 3 0003387Okay, let’s see if it’s up to par with my requirements.
Does anything explode?
Errr… yes, actually.
A cake. And there is a spectacular fire.
Alien SmileTee Hee.
Exploding cake… sounds delightfully messy.
I’m just not sure, though…
What, you’re still doubtful? After I’ve promised you glitz, glamour, intrigue, romance, betrayal, lots of food, travel, a rock star, a male nurse, an exploding cake and a fire? You are hard to please. All right, let’s see if the official blurb satisfies your hunger.
Her famous star remains her rock while life takes her on a little detour…
So she has finally found the man of her dreams; well, she’s seen him, for sure!  Yet rock star and ex-fiancé, Dan, keeps getting in the way of her new romance—even if he is just trying to be helpful. A fire, an impromptu mini-trip with Dan, and a dreaded wedding later, Sophie is still struggling to meet the love of her life. Then, just as she is getting it together with her perfect man, best friend Rachel commits an act of unspeakable betrayal. Sophie has had enough. Surprising herself and shocking her friends, she embarks on a secret journey and eventually gets her life back on track.
PKO_Alien 3 0003387Now, if you already told me she gets her life back on track, I know the ending.
Why would I need to read it?
Exploding cake, remember?
.
PKO_Alien 3 0003387Piff, please…
Have you ever actually exploded anything?
I have, in a manner of speaking. Fireworks, for starters, to mark the New Year. Then there’s my home entertainment special, the indoor volcano. Be sure you’ve got high enough ceilings if you try that one. Why would you do that? Let’s just say it keeps the kids quiet for a while. Oh and, at college, many years ago, there was this tradition of filling plastic bottles with dry ice, closing the lid, shaking it up and waiting for the boooom from a VERY safe distance. That was just for fun. I hasten to add that as a non-scientist, I was merely a spectator and never the purveyor of the dry ice nor the assembler of the bottles. Just for the record.
Alien SmileHa!
It does sound like there is a hidden and interesting side to you, Nicky Wells.
Do tell, have you ever painted your hair blue?
I have indeed. Not painted, exactly, but sprayed. It wasn’t just blue, it was blue-and-purple streaks. Why? Because I was fourteen and I needed to make a statement.
Alien SmileAnd what a beautiful statement it must have been!
So, have you ever traveled in space?
.
I do that all the time. My husband will come home and say, ‘you look all spaced out again’ and I’ll say, ‘well, yeah, I’m just on re-entry.’
Alien SmileYes! I love a fellow space traveler!
I’m hungry.
Want to raid Jennifer M. Eaton’s refrigerator?
Totally. I’m starving.
Does this mean I can give away a few books?
Alien SmileYes!
Let’s give away one copy of Sophie’s Turn,
and one copy of Sophie’s Run!
Brilliant!
.
There you have it! And I didn’t even have to intervene!
Comment below for your chance to win one of two ebooks.
Sales links for Sophie’s Run:
Sophie’s Run is now available in Kindle edition from Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk, and in Paperback edition from Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk. You can also get the paperback at Barnes & Noble, or download Sophie’s Run onto your Nook (coming soon).
Write a Story with Me # 39 – Queen of Queens by Nicky Wells
Nicky Wells brings us back to the Queen and her baby.  What’s happening there Nicky?
39 — Nicky Wells — Queen of Queens of the fae (Baby String)
Morana waited until she was certain that Natalia was sound asleep. Once more, she abandoned her human body and emerged Queen Morath of the fae, hovering above Natalia’s sleeping form before casting a protective spell on her. “Sleep safely until I return,” she intoned solemnly.
Then Morath closed her eyes and stilled her thoughts, focusing every fibre of her being on Jenelle, tracing her very soul until she found her. “Take me to her, now,” she bid her brilliant mind and in a faint flash of ivory sparkle, she vanished from Natalia’s side.
Morath joined the young queen Jenelle at the hive, tending her own offspring and quite unprepared for the apparition of the Queen of Queens of the fae.
Morath,” Jenelle breathed, falling to her knees and bowing her head in the required gesture of supplication. “We thought… we didn’t know… where have you been?”
“My child,” Morath intoned gently. “Please rise. We have much to talk about.”
Jenelle lifted her head and obediently straightened her body, finally daring to look at Morath. “I have done wrong,” she murmured. “I can see it in your eyes.”
“You do not understand. Not everything is as you see,” Morath replied. “Yes, I am Morath. I am also your mother. And I am Morana, the midwife, the facilitator of human life. I have lived in human form for many years. I will explain, but first tell me — Natalia’s family. Where are they? It is of the utmost urgency that we unite them.”
Science is moving faster than Science Fiction
There used to be a time when science fiction writing was safe.  The Earth didn’t have any really cool technology.  Times are changing.  As writers, we need to think up new and exciting things.  Our imaginations need to be bigger and better!
I recently read the attached article from Popular Science.  Click on over if you want details, but in a nutshell, MIT has created a synthetic/organic muscle that will respond to light.  They think they can create robots with this that will move fluidly.
Good thing?  Bad thing?  I’m all for progress.  But there’s a “but” in here somewhere.  What that “but” is will be up to the individual reader.
What I love when an article like this comes out, is the banter in the comments.  Some people make good points, some are just crazy.  Either way, it’s good entertainment.
If you like to write Sci-fi with robots, take a click on over and read the article.  There is definitely a great novel brewing in there.  – Just watch yourself, because there is fiction written about stuff like this that is forty years old or more.
I’ll pass on this, thanks… I like organic aliens, thank you very much.
