#FreeFriday Win a #Free Ebook “Mona Lisa’s Room” and “A Taste of Chocolate” by Vonnie Davis

Free_Fridays!

Yay!  It’s Freebee Fridays time!

First of all,

Congrats to last week’s winner:

You’ve received a free copy of “Trust and Betrayal” by Dani-Lyn Alexander.

If you’d like to find out more about Dani-Lyn, hop on over to her website http://www.danilynalexander.com/

.

PKO_Alien 3 0003387Ok, I will admit I like the pretty blue shirts,

but I just can’t understand this half-headed man stuff!

He’s not half-headed.  It’s symbolic.  It’s so you can make him look like the man of your dreams.

PKO_Alien 3 0003387Oh!  I think I understand, but I still think it’s creepy.

Please, no half-headed covers this week.

.

Nope!  This week Romance writer extraordinaire Vonnie Davis is here!

PKO_Alien 3 0003387What’s so great about her?

She’s just great.

Trust me.  You’ll love her!

Alien SmileOkay, happy face time.  Hello.

Oh, you look like a pleasant lady.

Come on in and have a seat.

Ha!  Dani-Lyn told me you had blue hair.  I thought she meant you were old.

Is that your real hair? It’s so long and luxurious!

Alien SmileWell, yes, it is my own hair.

I’m so glad you like it.  Most Earthlings can’t see the subtle highlights.

.Wow, this is getting a little deep.

Dani-Lyn warned you about the little fire last week, huh?

Shhhhh!

Quiet Eaton, I’m working the alien here.

Alien SmileWell, Let’s get down to business nice author lady.  Tell me a little about yourself.

.

I’m known to my closest friends simply as “V”.

.

Alien SmileOh!  Like the TV Series about aliens?

.
Umm, no, like “Vonnie”

.

PKO_Alien 3 0003387Oh.

I never saw that show.

It’s not a show… You know what, never mind.

I’m a choco-holic and caffeine addict. And I want to write the kind of books readers can’t put down, storylines they think about when they’re away from it and characters they want to revisit again and again.

PKO_Alien 3 0003387So, do you?

 No, not yet, but hope
springs eternal for this old broad.

.

PKO_Alien 3 0003387Old broad?

How old are you?

Hey!

You can’t ask her that?

PKO_Alien 3 0003387Why not?

It’s rude!

.

PKO_Alien 3 0003387You Earthlings are so odd!  Okay Vonnie err… “V” Why is your book good enough that I would want to take time away from plotting to destroy your meager little world?

Oh, hon, ask my hero. He’s the one who woke me up at night if I wrote a scene he didn’t like. He’d act it out over and over, and then look at me and growl, “Now do you see why that crap you wrote won’t work?” I was greatly sleep-deprived during the writing of this romantic suspense.

PKO_Alien 3 0003387Wakes you up in the middle of the night?

It sounds like he has a Martian appetite.

If that makes you happy, then yes!

He definitely has a Martian appetite.

PKO_Alien 3 0003387Okay, I’m still with you,

but why would I want to read this?

If you’ve ever dreamed of running through the streets of Paris from terrorists while wearing a thong and stilettos, or karate kicking two men in a bookstore while wearing said stilettos, or being arrested as a prostitute merely because you’d misspoken to an undercover policeman with your poor French or painting the shoreline of the Normandy coast while a handsome French government agent sunbathed next to you, then this is the book for you.

PKO_Alien 3 0003387Do I even look remotely like a woman who’s dreamed of these things?

Well, I’ve heard you blue haired ladies have a wild side.

.

PKO_Alien 3 0003387Yes, but I dream about blowing things up.

I want a book with explosions!

Then this is the book for you! In the opening scene my heroine unwittingly foils a terrorist’s bombing attempt in the Louvre. To retaliate, members of The Red Hand bomb several cafés in Paris.

Alien SmileYes!  Finally an author who isn’t afraid to express their explosive tendencies!

Now I am interested.

Tell me more!

Alyson Moore is still reeling from her recent divorce. Finding your husband in the shower with another man tends to destroy your feminine identity. At her sister’s insistence, she travels to Paris, something she’s always wanted to do. Within two days of her arrival to the City of Light, she is put into the protective custody of a French agent, ten years younger than she. They are both pursued by the terrorists in almost non-stop adrenaline packed action. Things soon heat up between them, but more importantly, Alyson finds out she’s stronger than she ever imagined.

Alien Huh CloseThere we go with the robotic response again.

Why do all you authors do that?

 It’s a human tendency.

You have to cut us lower species a break. It sounds good though, right?

PKO_Alien 3 0003387You said there was an explosion, right?

.

Yes.

Right in the beginning

Alien SmileThen yes!

It does sound good!

Does that mean you’ll let me give a copy away?

Alien SmileYes!  As a matter of fact, you can give two books away!

Great!

I can also throw in a copy of “A Taste of Chocolate!”

Alien SmileWonderful!

So we will have two winners this week!

What a great idea!

.

.

Let’s get rocking!  If anyone would like to win a free copy of

“Mona Lisa’s Room” or “A Taste of Chocolate”

leave a comment below. We will choose a winner on Monday. Thanks Vonnie, and great job winning over the Little Blue Lady from Mars!

Whew!  That was exciting.

Thank you so much for having me!

“Love in the Afternoon”

Write a Story with Me Part 30 – To Janelle’s Horror “What?” – With Richard Leonard

Surprise!  I’m changing the day for “Write a Story with Me” from Tuesdays to Mondays.  Why?  Well, ’cause I can!  Here we go!

It’s been nearly a month since we saw Marci’s poor mom go into labor all alone!  Richard Leonard throws it back to  the birth string this week.  Will Janelle get help in time?  Take it away, Richard!

30 – Richard Leonard

Janelle was already out the bedroom door before realising the old woman was still fumbling for her walking stick. She watched helplessly as Morana shuffled unsteadily across the short distance from the bed to the other side of the night-stand where her walking stick rested, using the night-stand for support. Janelle’s mood fell as she realised how frail the old lady now was. Her magic could only do so much.

“I’m sorry, Morana. I wasn’t aware you cannot -”

“I can do this, Young Fairy. I must do this”, Morana said.

Janelle, said nothing, guilt building within her. To drag this weak old dear out into the cold night to help a woman giving birth seemed to be a cruel irony. Patience, Janelle, patience. At the same time she needed to hurry. The longer Natalia was without proper assistance the more dangerous the situation becomes.

Morana finally had the support of her stick and began a steady rhythm of shuffling towards the door and out of the house. Janelle, to ease her impatience and peace of mind,  would fly up and down the street and patrol the area while Morana hobbled slowly towards Natalia’s residence. At the end of every run she would check on Natalia through the window, carefully ensuring she was still in a stable condition, sometimes offering reassurance that help was on its way.

On the way back she would arrive with relief to find that Morana had made significant progress walking up the street. This continued for several shortening laps until, to Janelle’s horror,

Oh!  The mid sentance stop!  What a way to leave it.  Someone’s quaking in their booth figuring out what Janelle saw!

Write a Story with Me is a group endeavor just for the fun of it.  A different writer adds a new 250 words each week.  It is the ultimate Flash Fiction Challenge!

If you’d like to sign up, come on over.  There’s always room for more!

Critique Blog Hop #3 – 250 words from my YA Urban Fantasy

Sunday_Snippets

Okay… Here’s mine.  This is the second 250 words of my new YA Urban Fantasy: “The First Day of the New Tomorrow”.  In the First 250 words, Maya is in the bathroom getting ready for school.  She put on her glasses, and her vision got blurry.

swish swivel squiggle 2

“What the…” She grabbed the counter and pulled the metal frames from her face.  The room slipped into perfect crisp focus again.  Three slow breaths calmed her only slightly.

A ray of sunshine poked through the white lace curtain, landing on a towel beside the bathtub.  A spider web clung to the ceiling, holding more dust than forgotten prey.  Three nails popped through the wall near the door—all normal things, except she could see them clearly—just as clearly as she could see her glasses perched on the counter before her.

“Okayyy…”  She lifted the spectacles to her eyes, crinkling her nose as the world blurred before her. She stared at the lenses.  “Teenager’s eyesight clears up overnight.  News at eleven.”  She smiled and slipped the glasses into her pocket.  “I’m certainly not complaining.”

She trudged down the stairs and found her mother’s obligatory, “Don’t forget to eat breakfast” note fastened to the refrigerator door—as if she’d even look at the fridge if she weren’t already in breakfast mode.

Rifling past the food savers and soda cans, she sighed.  Would a few eggs be too much to ask for? She grabbed the milk and closed the door.  Cereal would have to do.  Spinning, she pursed her lips, seeing the nearly empty Cheerios container on the counter.  Great.  Eat breakfast, but I’m not leaving anything for you to eat.

She reopened the refrigerator and startled.  Three eggs lay beside last night’s spaghetti sauce, neatly balancing on the wired shelving.  How the heck could she have missed them before?

“Okay, eggs it is.”

The Amazon Breakthrough Novel Contest. Did you enter?

The window for submitting to the Amazon Breakthrough novel contest has closed.  Did you enter?  Did you even know about it?

With a $50,000 first prize, it does cause quite a stir.

When I first found out about it months ago, I brushed it off because my current WIP, Fire in the Woods was complete, but hovering at a pitiful 42,000 words and didn’t make the minimum word count.  Then a few weeks ago people started talking about it again as the submission window opened, and guess what?  I was now ABOVE THE REQUIRED WORD COUNT.

So, did I enter?  You bet your left butt cheek I did!

Do I have high hopes?  Well, 1 in 10,000 is really not all that bad in odds, if you consider that 50% of the entries will probably be junk.  I’m a realist though…

Round one is based on your pitch.  Pitching is not my strong point.  I like my pitch, but I have no idea if it is good enough to be selected as a top choice.  When I looked at the pitches of past winners, I had to scratch my head.  If I saw some of those, I would have passed them over… so who knows what they are REALLY looking for (or were all the others really that bad?) Ha!

So, I have no idea how I will do… but what this did force me to do is speed up my editing process, and completely re-write my beginning.  My manuscript is a lot sharper now than it was a few weeks ago, so if anything, that’s a plus for me.

Do I have a chance of winning?  Well, I kind of look at it like this… I looked at past winners, and I felt the same way as I do about the Oscars.  Movies that win an Oscar are the ones that I would rather get a root canal than have to sit through.  To me, Oscar=boring.  That’s the way I feel about a lot of the past Breakthrough Novel winners as well.  I am sure they were well written, but not “my cup of tea”.

So, no…. Fire in the Woods is not the “Artsy” type that usually wins this type of thing.  But I entered.  At least I tried — and I did a lot of polishing to get it there.

Who knows?  This year might be the year of the manic chase/explosion novel!

Good luck to everyone who entered!

#FreeFriday Win a #Free Ebook “Trust and Betrayal” by Dani-Lyn Alexander

Free_Fridays!

Yay!  It’s Freebee Fridays time!

First of all,

Congrats to last week’s winner: jmmcdowell

You’ve received a free copy of “18 Things” by Jamie Ayres.

If you’d like to find out more about Jamie, hop on over to http://jamieayres.com/

.

PKO_Alien 3 0003387Oh, I liked the last one.

I think I’m actually making friends!

Yes, Jamie Ayres certainly was lively.  This week we have the fantabulous Dani-Lyn Alexander here to visit.

PKO_Alien 3 0003387Will I like her?

.

I don’t know.

Why don’t you invite her in?

Alien SmileOkay, I’ll give it a go.  Hello.

Oh, another blonde, huh?

Come on in and have a seat.

Wow.

When they said you were an alien I thought they were kidding.

PKO_Alien 3 0003387Do you have a problem with aliens?

.

I don’t think so.

I never really though about it

PKO_Alien 3 0003387So, what do you want?

.

I’m hoping to have people read and enjoy my books!!

PKO_Alien 3 0003387Well that’s a pretty haughty request.  People have busy lives, you know.  What makes you think your book is worth my time?

I love my characters. I loved telling their story and I think people will want to see what happens to them.

PKO_Alien 3 0003387Seriously?  That’s the best you could come up with?

You gotta do better than that.

Umm, well… It’s exciting and suspenseful.

It has a sexy man, paranormal skills, and fire!

PKO_Alien 3 0003387Really?  A Sexy man?

Does he have a big blue…

Watch it!

PKO_Alien 3 0003387Why?

I was going to ask if he had a big mop of blue hair!

**Sigh** Sorry Dani-Lyn.

Continue, guys.

He doesn’t have blue hair, but he is sexy.

.

PKO_Alien 3 0003387How can he be sexy without blue hair?

This is one of those human books, isn’t it?

Well, we are on Earth.

.

PKO_Alien 3 0003387Oh, so Dani-Lyn is another one of those smarty-pants blondes.  Someday I’ll have to bring a real man to this planet to show you Earthlings what sexy really is.  Okay, so we have a boring typical Romance hero.  Ho humm.  So why would I want to read this.  Does anything explode?

Nothing actually explodes, but there are two great fire scenes where two fireholders battle for control of the flames.

Alien Huh CloseFireholders?  Is that supposed to make sense?

What is this about, anyway?

Single mother Shay McKeon is intelligent as well as street-smart. But when she receives a phone call threatening her children, she rushes headlong into the hands of evil.

Saved from certain death by Guardian, Mason Constanza, Shay is taken to the Realm of Light, where she learns her husband never abandoned her as she’d thought, and that good and evil are nothing like she’d imagined. Learning to deal with her own existence as a Guardian, Shay’s attraction to Mason grows. She has her own demons to battle, and when her daughter is abducted, she’ll have to learn to trust Mason and his team. But Mason has his own ancient battles to fight…

Alien Huh CloseWhaaaat? Now I’m really confused.  Where’s the fire stuff? And does anyone else find it freaky how every time I ask this questions these authors turn into mindless automatons spitting out back cover blurbs?  What’s up with that? And look at that cover!  It’s another freaky half-headed guy!  This is a really strange planet to think half-headed guys are sexy.  Why, on Mars our men have nice big full heads.

Hey!  G-rated.

You promised.

Alien Huh CloseWhat?  They have heads.  You have a problem with heads… I’ve read some of your stuff missy.  The guys in your novels all have heads.

Okay!  New topic.

Sorry, Dani-Lyn.

No, that’s okay.  I’m glad you were here to field that one.  She’s a little… interesting.

You have no idea.

.

PKO_Alien 3 0003387Are you talking about me?

Of course not!

Please, continue.

PKO_Alien 3 0003387At the moment, I’m bored.  I don’t want to give away this book.  There are just too many books about half-headed men in the world.  These women are just creepy!  It’s wrong… Wrong I say!

Come on.  Give her a chance.

She came all the way here.

PKO_Alien 3 0003387Okay.  Last Chance to redeem yourself, creepy half-headed man lover.  Have you ever exploded something?  Think carefully Earthling.

Yes, sort of. In eleventh grade I exploded my chemistry experiment. I don’t remember what it was, but I mixed everything up, put it on the burner, and POW! Up it went, and then all this foam started pouring all over. I’m pretty sure that was not supposed to happen!

PKO_Alien 3 0003387I am not amused.

You stole that from the other author.  She said the same thing!

No I didn’t.

Couldn’t the same thing happen to two people?

.

PKO_Alien 3 0003387No, I think not Earthling.

I shall not be giving away a copy of your headless book!

No?

Please?

Pretty please?

PKO_Alien 1 0003414No means no!

In fact, since you’ve never blown up anything, I shall blow up this half-headed book of yours!

YES!  Death to the half-headed book!

Is that a ray gun?  Wait a minute.

You’re serious?

Duck Dani-Lyn!

.

Alien PKO_0003428Ha Ha Ha!

.

She blew up my book.

She actually blew up my book!

Shhh.  Keep your head down.

Is she gone yet?

Yes, I think so.

Does she do that often?

More often than I’d like.  The good news is that she doesn’t know that we can also give an ebook away.  Is that good for you?

Whew!  I forgot I also had an ebook.

Won’t she get mad?

.

Probably, but I’ll deal with that.

I think the book sounds great, and the cover looks awesome!

Thanks.

I never really even though about the half-headed man.

Believe me.  Most authors don’t.

She never let’s that one go.

So, ebook it is!

Let’s get rocking!

Write a Story with Me Part 29 – An unexpected Savior by Kai Damian

Surprise!  I’m changing the day for “Write a Story with Me” from Tuesdays to Mondays.  Why?  Well, ’cause I can!  Here we go!

Three weeks ago we left Janelle the Fae Queen while getting help to our poor Mommy in labor. Then we left them to be thrown back into the heat of battle where Marci is still tied to a bed with a huge cliffhanger!  Than Bethany fell out of the sky.  But is Daddy dead?  I can’t stand it anymore!!!!!!!

29 – Kai Damian – Battle String

“Marci,” Yoran screamed as he opened his eyes, but his cry was lost in the chaos that trapped him like a coffin of wind and fire. The ship was crumbling around him and his men were sliding down into the water, lifeless. Covered in blood and hanging by a thread—literally, as his jacket had hooked itself onto an open cabinet door—he watched his two young daughters jump off the ship and disappear into the tempest below them. As he reached for them, screaming their names, he heard a snap and started rapidly sliding down toward nothingness once again.

“Please keep Natalia safe,” he prayed, and closed his eyes, ready for the end. “Good bye my loves.”

“Not today” he heard a woman’s voice behind him, and felt her grab his hand and pull him after her. As he opened his eyes, he and his mysterious savior were free falling into the eye of the storm that had appeared out of thin air before the ship went down. All he could see in the midst of the gray cloud that engulfed them was long, red hair flowing behind a young woman dressed in a blue starship uniform. Their hands were welded together, and the moment he allowed himself to feel her grip, he knew. The pain of losing his eldest for the second time hit him like a boulder coming off a steep mountain and he lost consciousness once again.

“Daddy, daddy, wake up,” Marci cried. Yoran opened his eyes to find his two youngest daughters shaking his arm as they knelt beside him on the frigid marble floor of an opulent room open to the sky above. Behind them, with a stern look on her face and her arms tightly crossed, stood his stolen child, his beloved Sian.

Okay… Here’s mine.  This is the extremely newly revised first 250-ish words of my Young Adult Urban Fantasy “Fire in the Woods.”   My goal is to start submitting this to publishers within the next month, so I need these page to really shine!

swish swivel squiggle 2

The bed rumbled beneath me as the shrill scream of jet engines ruined a perfectly good daydream.  “Dad!  The stinking Air Force is flying over the houses again!” I turned up the volume on my MP3 player, closed my eyes and lost myself in musical bliss—until my pink earphones popped out of my ears.

“I said, what do you expect me to do about it.” Dad dropped the earbuds on my lap and folded his way-too muscular arms.

“I don’t know.  You’re the Army, aren’t you?  Go invade them or something.”

His lips set as his eyebrows rose, twitching the spikey hairs where a normal person’s bangs would be.  “Invade them?”

“I don’t know.  Do something.  It’s annoying.”

A smile crossed his lips.  “How about we…”

The room rattled around us as the engines of another plane throttled overhead, followed by another. Dad crouched as if ducking, his six-foot body instantly folding with military precision.

I pulled my pillow tightly to my thin frame.  “What…”

“Shhh.” His hand shot out, silencing me instantly as a rattling resonance echoed through my open window.  “That sounds like…”  His eyes widened.  “Jess, get down!”

A huge boom throttled my ears, barraging my mind with an infestation of sound.  Dad’s hand gripped my arm, pulling me to the floor before he shielded my body with his own.

The ground shook, and a soda can shimmied off my dresser, smashing to the floor and fizzling all over the carpet.  I slammed my palms over my ears, cringing as the explosion quaked the walls around us.

You might think this article was about the technical aspects of formatting, but you would only be partially correct. What this article is truly about is respect. If you want to succeed at this dedicated hobby you’ve chosen to pursue (believe me, you don’t want to think of it as a career…it only leads to masses of frustration) then you need to get your head in the correct mindset. You are not alone in your desire. There are countless individuals who want to be authors. There are a considerably less individuals who are in a position to make that possible. Editors have to look through hundreds, even thousands of manuscripts every year. I don’t think I have to tell you that they can’t accept them all. You know what that means? It is your job to make their job as easy for them as possible. You can do that in two ways:

  • Ignore what I’ve shared with you here and start deciding which room you are going to wallpaper with rejections first, or
  • Do everything you can to make your manuscript clean and formatted to the publisher’s preference so that technical issues don’t distract the editor from the creative aspects of your work.

Now I’m not saying if you follow all the submission guidelines your work is guaranteed to be accepted, but I am saying you stand a heck of a better chance of at least getting noticed.
