There are many aspects to writing a novel that are extremely difficult. For me, the biggest obstacle to overcome—my true nemesis—is doubt. Writing is an art form and art is subjective. You never know if people will connect with your words, characters, storylines. As a writer, you need to become accustom to rejection. You’re rejected during the querying stage, once published you’re rejected for book reviews, sometimes your own publisher rejects future scripts, and often times there’s no explanation as to why. The uncertainty of whether your writing is to blame creates huge barriers of self-doubt. This doubt often hinders my creative flow, especially when I’m trying to start a new manuscript. Luckily, I have an amazing critique partner who is not only extremely patient when dealing with my many freak-outs, but very supportive and encouraging. If not for being able to share my failures and successes with a fellow writer who totally gets it, I might have fallen victim to the doubt monster.
