What did you used to Make Believe about when you were a child? Cabana Boys? (Who doesn’t love a good cabana boy?)

What did you Make Believe as a child?  What a great question.  I’ve done a lot of interviews on this blog tour, and being that one of the anthologies I am in is called “Make Believe” you would think that wold be a common question … but it was only asked once, by the lovely and talented Vanessa Chapman (Who, come to think of it, talked the Little Blue Lady into setting me free when I was kidnapped, and received an ARC of Make Believe.)  Hmmmm…. I think I’m due a review from her sometime soon.

Today you can find me on both Vanessa Chapman’s site talking about Make Believe, and also talking about “For the Love of CHristmas” at Dawn’s Reading Nook where I’ll be talking about Mango smoothies and cabana boys.  Mmmmm Sounds great, doesn’t it?

When you come back, I’d love to hear about what you dis for Make Believe when you were a kid.  But if you want to talk about cabana boys, that’s cool too.  🙂ChristmasFiligree

Who is your literary Idol?

Today I am being interviewed by J.C. Martin, the Author of the crime novel “Oracle”.  As I looked over her interesting list of questions, one in particular stood out to me.  At first I rolled my eyes, but then I really thought about it… “Who is your literary idol?”  Now, most people will want to sound all smart and all and pick out a name from classic literature that would BORE ME TO TEARS if I read it, so I decided to be honest.  You’ll have to hop on over to see who I chose.

But I am wondering… FOR REAL… who do you consider your own literary idol?  A.K.A:  Who do you want to be when you grow up?

Have you ever made a promise you never expected to keep? A review of “Beginning of Forever” by Terri Rochenski

Yes, I am still on my blog tour for “Make Believe” and “For the Love of Christmas” but today is one of those great days when I can hop back here and share a little love.

This was a crazy idea, but at the time it seemed like a good one when I agreed.  Terri Rochenski, who is an anthology buddy from “Make Believe” is also in a Christmas anthology that was just released.  “Christmas Magic” is available now for your Snuggly holiday reading pleasure.

Anyway, we decided to review each other’s stories on the same day.  (Yeah, no pressure)  So, to read her review of my story “Connect the Dots” from the “For the Love of Christmas” anthology, click HERE to hop on over to Terri’s site.  I’ll be jumping over there in a minute with you to see what she said.

But in the meantime, let’s Chat about Terri’s story.

Now, Christmas is supposed to be a time of joy, right?

DON’T SAY NO!  I LOVE CHRISTMAS!

Anyway, this is my conundrum:  I’m reading “The Beginning of Forever”, ready for an uplifting romance… and it starts off on page one with the love of her life DYING.

What

Where’s the love?  Where’s the joy? What’s going to happen to that dinner she has in the oven?

Dang, I was bawling my freaking eyes out!

I could not, in my right mind, figure out where she was going with this… and then “it” happened. I figured it out.

This is not really a story about Christmas.

It is not even really what I would consider a Romance.

This is a story about coming to grips with life, and finding a way to cope.  This is a story about moving on, about self-discovery, and using your past to guide your future.

Terri realistically weaves this 50’s based historical “romance” into a story that will leave you wiping the tears from your eyes and turning pages, begging for everything to turn out all right.

As for the title of this review: Have you ever made a promise you never expected to keep? I need to keep that to myself because it’s a spoiler… but that is also what this story is about… Keeping promises because you have to, not because you want to, and then dealing with finding out you want to keep your promise after all.

This is a wonderfully spun tale that Rochenski should be very proud of.

My only gripe is that it is sandwiched in an anthology of more whimsical tales, and I’m not sure the readers of the “lighter” stories enclosed will “get” the depth of emotion and strength of this story. This is not a light fun read.  This is more centered to someone who enjoys something with more serious content.  Absolutely well done.

Okay… now I’m hopping over to see what she said about mine… Coming with me?

Are ya back? I hope what she said was nice.  As for comments, let’s keep with the title… “Have you ever made a promise you never expected to keep?”  Well, have you?

Who is your favorite all-time hero? Do you have a soft spot for a hero in a book you’ve read/written?

This is one of my favorite interviews in this tour.  Admittedly, it was one of the first ones I did, and I was a little nervous, but these were some of the best and thought-provoking questions.

Today I am over at Denise Moncrief’s blog, and all of her questions surround my thought on heroes, so please stop by.  I’d love to hear about YOUR heroes!

My Parents always fought at Christmas. It’s one of my Fondest Memories.

My parents always fought at Christmas.  Seriously, they did.  It is one of the few times I remember seeing them fight.  It really warms my heart to think about it now– as an adult– now that I understand why my mom was screaming and laughing at the same time.

Today I am guest posting at my publisher Still Moment’s website, so please click on over to find out why I am so wacky, and why I remember the fights so fondly.

Hi fellow antho-buddy! Thanks for having me as a guest today. I’m über excited to be here to talk about the Make Believe anthology, and more particularly, my short story, THE AMULET OF ORMISEZ.

Oh yeah!  Totally into it!  You know me… give me a hot guy in armor and I’m all a-gush. I’m wondering what the heck in that picture inspired a classic Fantasy with knights and castles?

I wish I could say I had something or someone that inspired me to write The Amulet of Ormisez. In all honesty, I was lost for weeks. I just stared and stared at that photograph (which is now the cover), not knowing what I was going to write about. Then one day, I opened a vein and ‘bled’.

Ewe.  Okay, I’m grossed out…

Ha!  Sorry.  When I first saw the photo, my first impression was “red against white” – contamination/blood against purity/snow. There was a castle in the background. I immediately thought how perfect this was, especially for the fantasy writer in me. What fantasy elements could I bring into play? At first I thought dragons, but the thought was replaced almost instantly with selkies, and the thought stuck.

After several weeks/months of no inspiration, a thought came to me. With only a few weeks to spare to meet the publisher’s deadline for submission, I sat at my computer and started writing. I don’t know where the idea came from, but I got this vision of a man, riding horseback over frozen terrain, his cloak flapping behind him. Before I knew it, there was a story emerging. I let the characters take me where they wanted to take me.

That’s totally cool.  It’s like going on a ride, right?  Do you always write like that?

I’m not a planner. I finished the story in a couple of days, edited it and threw it out to beta readers. They all came back and said the first half was great…the second half needed lots of work. I agreed, and so I went back to work. It was literally hours before deadline when I made the final edits, closed my eyes and hit the “submit” button. I can’t tell you how thrilled I was that J. Taylor loved my story and wanted to publish it.

Their belief in me encouraged me to write more short stories and continue on with a YA fantasy trilogy I’ve been writing. I hope to see a lot more of my stories, including my first novel, published in 2013.

Yay!  I hear you may have a dragon hidden under your sleeve.  🙂

I’m not telling [wink]

Awesomesauce!  Cannot wait!  But for now, feel the Fantasy love with J.Keller Ford’s THE AMULET OF ORMISEZ in the Make Believe Anthology.  Oh Yeah!

What’s Your Favorite Christmas Tradition?

Ahhhhhh… Christmas Memories.  Aren’t they the best?  Do you remember the smell of cookies baking in the oven when you came home from school? MMMMMM.

I loved the smell of my grandmother’s home-made apple strudel.  She was a pastry chef before she retired, and My Goodness could she throw together a strudel.  Unfortunately, she literally threw them together.  She tried to write down the recipe… but it read “A handful of flour and enough butter until it looks just right.  Throw in a little cinnamon…”  Sigh.  I miss you, Grandma.  I wish my kids got to meet you, and taste your amazing baking.

Awe darn!  Now I’m all teary-eyed.  What the heck are you guys doing to me?

Ugh!  Anyway… today I am hanging out with Gloria Richards to talk about more of my favorite memories… and I have a slew of fun ones to tell over the next month.  And since I’m feeling Christmassy, I might just be in the giving spirit today [Wink] So hop on over and give me a shout-out at Gloria Richard’s blog.

Sacrificing Virgins? What ever happened to Christmas Cheer?

Today I am hosting the lovely and talented Terri Rochenski, Author of “Sacrificial Oath” from the Make Believe Anthology.  Awesomeness.

Here is the “Back Cover Blurb” for Terri’s story:

Sacrificial Oath by Terri Rochenski
An impetuous act unwittingly makes Alesuela the fulfillment of the Sovereign’s Blood Oath to their Goddess. In five days, she’ll be forced to make the greatest choice of her life: become the virginal sacrifice already promised, or force the man she loves most to die in her place.

With an impossible choice in front of her, she searches for ways to undo the oath, and in her quest, finds not everything in her life is as she expects.

ChristmasFiligree

So, Miss Terri… we both looked at the very same picture, and I came up with Last Winter Red, and you came up with Sacrificial Oath.  What gives?

https://i0.wp.com/www.jtaylorpublishing.com/photos/authors/11.jpgThe first thing I thought was how much the landscape (minus the tower) looks like one of the fields below the house I grew up in. Raised on a farm in central PA, there’s lots of corn – and snow. When I was a kid, anyway. 🙂

  1. Ummm… Okay…. So, they sacrifice virgins in the Pennsylvania farmland?  Remind me to steer away from there next time I’m passing through!

Bwaaaahaaaaawhaaa!  I actually had a story simmering in my mind already concerning a virginal sacrifice and when I saw the picture prompt most of the story fell into place. My mother is my go-to for brainstorming & she shared with me a story from the Bible where a man promised God a sacrifice in return for victory in war. Poor guy got the short end of the stick. I merged the two thoughts together and came up with Sacrificial Oath.!

Oh!  Thank goodness!  For a minute I thought the mild manner farm chic thing was just a disguise!  So, What’s next for you?

My short story, Beginning of Forever, released on Dec 4th with Still Moments Publishing‘s Christmas Magic anthology. It’s an historical romance inspired by my sister-in-law’s life. More info can be found on my website’s media page found HERE.
I have even bigger & better news, but my lips are sealed for 5 more days – PR day.  😉 Be sure to swing by my blog on the 17th!!

OOOOoooo Terri’s holding out on us!

Thanks so much for stopping by, Terri.  Be sure to check out “Sacrificial Oath” in the Make Believe Anthology Available now.  Yay!

How about you?

Sacrifice any virgins lately? (Did I actually ask that?)

Strike that!!!!!  Where did the inspiration come from for your last work? (Whew!  So much better a topic)

So, What goes through the mind of a headline author?

Yep, I am still hopping through the Bioshere. Whew!  What a crazy ride!

Hey!  Don’t forget to sign up on the Rafflecopter to win a copy of Make Believe of For the Love of Christmas (Your choice)

We’ve got another review today, so if you would be so kind as to Hop on over to Machenwood Chronicals and let me know what they said?

ChristmasFiligree

In the meantime …  Welcome J.A.Belfield, author of Escort to Insanity from the Make Believe Anthology.

So, JA.  We all had to come up with a story about the picture of the Lady In Red.  I came up with Last Winter Red … and you came up with Escort to Insanity.  What the heck is up with that?

I guess I’m a little backward to everyone else in the anthology because I was asked to write a short for a winter anthology before the picture prompt had even been chosen. Which meant my story was almost fully formulated before the image even went live. Fortunately, with a little playing about and tweaking, I was able to adapt the tale to reflect the beautiful imagery of the picture, the chill winteriness, the redness from the cloak.

Ohhhhh… well that makes a little more sence.  So how did this madness come about then?

Well, I think I read a story somewhere about a dating agency where the couple who went out turned out to be destined soul mates, yada, yada, yada, and I thought, but what if a couple went on a pre-arranged date and everything went wrong instead? What would happen then? And so the opening scene with Cole’s best friend popped into my head. I jotted it down as fast as possible, and everything spun out of control from there. Though, I will admit, I did reach about halfway through and decide to alter the path of the story slightly. After deleting a couple K words, Escort to Insanity is what I ended up with.

Deleting? [shiver] I Hate that word. Thanks so much for stopping by today, J.A.!

Everyone make sure to check out Escort to Insanity, snuggled up right behind Last Winter Red in the Make Believe ANthology (but you don’t have to read them in that order.  I won’t mind) 🙂
