27 – Kate Johnson – Battle String
A sudden explosion jerked the ship sideways. Marci gripped the sides of her bed, grateful that she had been tied in. A terrible rush of noise filled Marci’s ears, and she gasped in fright. The ship bumped haphazardly, as though damaged, and she felt her stomach drop.
Shouts could be heard from the crew. Marci tried to yell for help, but her voice wouldn’t work. No matter how hard she tried, she was utterly voiceless. She tried hitting her hands on the bed frame, but the deathly shrieking of the engines drowned out any sound her little fists made.
The ship was falling. Falling fast. There was no time to think, hope, pray before the vessel shattered into three parts. Marci, still attached to her bed, sailed into the sky, tumbling toward the water. She cried soundlessly and clutched the bed in desperation. In her blurry daze, she saw the ball of fire that once was the ship. Dark objects dotted the sky before spinning to earth. Marci tried to keep track of something, anything, as she plummeted down. Finally, she realized the objects weren’t just loose shards of the ship.
They were bodies. Dead people falling around her like rain. Her throat clenched.
One of them was her father.
