Natalia was tired.  Her calves ached and her feet bled through her thin slippers but she wouldn’t stop running and screaming for her baby.  Eventually a thinning of the trees heralded the entrance to the Fae village and Natalia’s headlong dash slowed until she was barely moving forward.

She still didn’t know whether Morath was friend or foe but at this moment she was all that Natalia had and she had no choice.  She walked faster and within minutes was outside the Queen’s chambers.  A guard asked her business and told her to wait.  Natalia moved restlessly from one foot to the other as she waited and then the guard swept open the entry curtain and ushered her inside.

It took a moment for Natalia’s eyes to adjust to the darkness of the chambers after the bright light outside.  When she was finally able to focus she opened her mouth in a screeching roar.  Two guards ran forward to restrain her until Morath stepped down from the throne and ordered them to stand back.   She held the baby in outstretched arms and Natalia ran forward to snatch him, without resistance, from the Queen.

“Why?”

Natalia didn’t look up from her child as she asked the question.

“Why would you do that to me?”

“I was testing you.  With your child’s life at stake I needed to know that you would turn to me and not your human husband.  I cannot put my kingdom at risk just for one person.”

Natalia knew she was being told the truth but instead of relief all she felt was further confusion.  Where did this leave Yoran and Sian? Would she ever see them again?

Looking at the High Council’s faces, Yoran knew he had said too much when he revealed his true beliefs, but it was too late to take it back. He’d figure out a way to get out of trouble, he always did, he thought, and prepared himself to appease the High Council once more. Besides, The President would never act against him. That, he could count on.

“As for you… Protector Sumner, we are all concerned about the direction your philosophy has taken lately. While we all agree democracy is not a system we would ever encourage, openly admitting you see yourself as a dictator is rather difficult to hear. Because that would render us all quite useless, don’t you think?”

The President, Madam Serrano, watched Yoran closely, looking for a reaction that would seal the Council’s decision. She was a beautiful woman in her early forties, and had known Yoran since their youth. Rumor had it they had been sweethearts during their teenage years, and their fathers had been best friends before a mysterious fall-out brought a bitter end to their relationship. But nobody knew the truth for sure, since all the records of their lives had been long gone. And nobody dared ask either one of them.

“Madam Serrano… I apologize, perhaps I misstated my position. I find the council’s direction invaluable, and always will. What I meant to say was that in the context of my ship, it’s imperative that I maintain a tight grip on the entire operation. Especially on the crew. Lax rules will lead to chaos. And I know that the Council is the most dedicated defender against chaos.”

The High Council exchanged glances, then Madam Serrano received subtle nods from her fellow members. She hid a smile by biting her lips for a second, then she looked straight at Yoran and spoke with a resounding voice.

“Indeed, Protector, we are. Yet it seems that chaos has been following you around lately, despite our best attempts to curb it. So it’s time we took more drastic measures.”

She stood up, towering even higher over Yoran, who was trying hard to maintain a pleasant smile and not clench his jaws. “Beginning today, Sir, I will oversee the mission to defeat the Fae. And you will be working for me.”

74 Richard Leonard

After much agitation and discomfort caused by the harsh talking, baby lay amongst the warm comforting folds of a great source of love. The calm soothing voice and the stroking of his head and back produced an intense feeling of peace and tranquility in him. No place felt safer. This was Mamma.

Sleeping, he dreamed of lovely colors, beautiful shapes and calming sounds, still meaningless in his young mind. Yet he knew he felt peaceful and secure, far more so than earlier that day while awake.

His dream suddenly changed. The shapes became edgier, the colors brighter, blindingly so. Sounds were higher pitched, sharp and painful. Yet he could not scream. But Mamma would protect him, he knew this instinctively. He was safe with Mamma. There was something not safe nearby. It wasn’t just his dream. He knew this too, somehow.

He felt himself being torn from Mamma, a great force was pulling him away. It was the coldness he noticed first. Mamma’s warmth and touch vanished and he was enveloped in a stiff cold breeze as some unknown force moved him quickly yet carefully away from her. Again he tried to scream but could not. Many random incoherent thoughts rushed through his immature little mind. He could not make sense of them. Fear encased him. He recognized fear. It was inherent. His Mamma was gone and he was traveling somewhere again. He knew this much. Traveling fast through the air.

Then there was darkness. He was alone. Suddenly he felt a great power. His own power. But is mind was too feeble to understand what it was for and how he should use it.

#69 – Norah Jansen “Follow”

Natalia watched Morath surreptitiously. For all that the queen seemed to have her family’s best interests at heart Natalia feared that if it came to a showdown between the Fae and her husband Morath might sacrifice them all for the greater good as she saw it. Natalia pondered. Should she stay here and wait for the Establishment to make their next move and hope that her husband would return or go back to the safety of their own home and wait there for Yoran to make his way back to them. Or maybe they needed to disappear as well, where no Fae could find them.

Marci & Bethany huddled together, still crying over their father’s disappearance. There would be no help from there. Natalia turned towards her eldest daughter. Sian was watching her and raised one eyebrow in query. Natalia inclined her head and signaled Sian to follow her.

The baby was clasped loosely to her chest as she tried to give an impression of nonchalance while walking away. She looked behind once to make sure Sian was following and when she saw her daughter’s distinctive hair bobbing and weaving through the crowds of milling Fae she carried on.

An oak tree stood on the banks of the little stream that ran through the settlement – wide as a house at the base there was plenty of room to hide from sight as Natalia waited for Sian to appear.

The girl strode past the tree without noticing Natalia but twirled around when her mother hissed her name.

“What is the matter? Why are you skulking around out here?”

Natalia took a deep breath and rearranged her son in her arms before she could summon the courage to say the words aloud.

“I don’t trust Morath.”

While the confused father Yoran was trying to figure out his next course of action, his daughters were swooning over their newborn brother. Natalia was looking at them adoringly when Morath interrupted her thoughts, “I need to talk to you, Natalia.”

“The danger hasn’t yet gone. The war is going to aggravate soon.”

“I can understand. I am worried about Yoran. Will he be alright?” Natalia was genuinely concerned about her husband whom she immensely loved.

“He will be fine. What I am worried about is your own safety and that of the children. I suggest you take them to a safe place. I can have some one take you all there.”

“No… no…,” she voiced her opinion, “I can’t go. My husband is here. You have to understand.”

Morath ignored her plea and spoke in her authoritarian voice, “What about your girls and the young boy? I do not want them to be hurt.” Her eyes had gone red and Natalia shivered, looking at this powerful image. All the Fae around had gone white in the face as well.

“But after all, they are your children. You must decide what you want to do,” she continued, keeping her emotions in check and moved away from the frightened mother.

She was suspicious of Yoran. She was not sure, whether she should believe him or not. As a leader, she would have to do something that would surprise even him. It was time to incarnate the fighter in her.

#67 Shayla Kwiatkowski (shaylakwiatkowski.blogspot.com)

“It’s a good day for a court martial, son. I am your superior officer and we are in the midst of a battle, in case you haven’t noticed. Now, man your battle stations or I will have you escorted to the brig. Do you understand? Son?” Yoran spat out.

The young officer quavered. This was the Yoran he knew and expected in command of his ship.

“And furthermore, do not confuse duty with weakness.” Yoran pulled himself up to his full eminence. If he could not control anything else, he must retain control of his ship. He’d seen strong men go down, and how the others circled like vultures.

Yoran pushed his gun to the officer’s forehead. “Or should I just shoot you now?” he hissed.

“No..no Sir,” the unfortunate man stuttered.

The MP’s entered the room, alerted by the push of a secret emergency button.

“Escort Officer Dawes here to the brig.. Crime: Treason.”

“Protector Sumner, I meant no disrespect! Please! I have served you well!” the prisoner cried as he was dragged away.

Another officer quietly sat at the abandoned station.

“Orders, Sir?” he asked calmly.

“Return to home port,” snapped out Yoran.

“Right away, Sir. Returning home.”

Yoran glanced at the affable young man, and wasn’t much surprised to see the flash of Fae in his eyes.

“There’s more of us than you know, Sir,” he whispered.

Yoran sighed. This was not going to go away. He nodded.

“Carry on then.”

Part 65 – Danielle Ackley-McPhail “Glamore”- http://www.sidhenadaire.com

East/Jenelle breathed deep of the magic of the Gleaming Tree, drew it in and made it their own. As the Establishment dragon ship plied the skies they fed the tendril of mage energy trailing from the vessel, latched on to Yoran. They fed it and shaped it, sharpened the edge, then by their will pressed it against the technological governor embedded in his brain, the one control he had been unable to extricate. That malevolent chip had turned a loving father into a hate-filled tool. The fate of his family and the world depended on East/Jenelle’s successfully deactivating that program.

“Ah!” the melding of elemental being and royal fae cried out, the building pressure of the magic proving nearly too much for even Jenelle’s fae nature. And still they drew more as the control chip somehow fought back, sending threads of fire down the connection to burn away the cord of mage energy. The fae strengthened the bond even as the technology sought to sever it. The magic flared in the sky. Its current jammed against the technology and finally overcame it.

East/Jenelle sensed as Yoran, trapped in the ship above, cried out and crumbled to his knees as the magic killed the cybernetic chip that had forced him to act against his nature. They gasped, and quickly shrouded him in a seeming. If they were to bring down the Establishment and reinstate harmony between Human and Fae, it was important that those in command believed Yoran remained their tool…for now, anyway.

60— Vanessa-Jane Chapman “I can’t do it!”

Jenelle wrestled with the confusing emotions that surged through her. Morath was wise, the wisest one, and if she said that is what must happen, then who was Jenelle to disobey? And yet, to perish her, it was unthinkable.

What would Janosc do? Oh Janosc, what would you do?

“I can’t do it Morath, don’t ask me to, it’s not fair!”

“It has nothing to do with fairness. I’m not asking you to do it, I’m telling you to, it is the only way.” Morath gripped Jenelle’s wrist, and placed a gleaming silver dagger in her palm. Instinctively Jenelle’s trembling fingers closed around it. “There is no choice child! And no more time. Do it now.” The steely determination in her voice drove through Jenelle.

Jenelle was aware of the trail of tears streaking down both sides of her face, and a pain deep in her gut. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw her arm raise up high, dagger clenched tight. She felt dismembered from it, and yet the dagger was hot and burned into her skin. Held high, her arm shook violently, white knuckles protruding.

“Do it!” Morath’s voice pierced through the air and she buried her face into the dirt, certain of her fate. A fate that may have come to fruition had it not been for the breeze from the East. Fae legend told tale of the breeze from the East; nobody knew for sure what it was, only that it would come when the time was due. It arrived first at ground level, whirling its way snake-like around Jenelle’s feet and swiftly moving up her legs. Morath felt it too, her head lifted from the ground as Jenelle’s dagger-clenched hand dropped limply to her side.

58 – Elin Gregory “If we die, we die together.”

The three formations, formed their arrowheads and idled while Janosc consulted with Briss and Dolor, the head of formation three.

“A head-on attack is out,” Dolor said. “Look at those air intakes. I don’t want any of my boys shredded.”

“And I don’t like that shimmer,” Briss added.

Janosc had to agree. At this distance it was unlikely to do much damage, but he had sent out a curse, heavily laced with malice, and it had caromed off the shimmer like a gently tossed apple core. “They have something to block magic,” he said. “If we are going to bring the ship down it must be by physical means and our chances …” He eyed the ship and glanced back at the ranks of fae, wings blurring against the ocean.

“I have an idea.” He explained quickly, divided the force and allocated duties then tuned his mind to Briss’s. “Go back to Jenelle. Her safety is your responsibility.”Janosc could see Briss’s distress in the jerky flutter of his wings, the clenching of his armoured fists.  “You mean too much to me to see you die.”

“No, I will take the aft air intake. If we die, we die together.”

They bumped fists then the groups of fae sped to Janosc’s bidding. He gave the word and their magically contained bundles of seawater hit the air intakes, smashing the fans and flashing into expanding clouds of superheated steam. The ship’s engines screamed and it lurched, sliding towards the angry waves.

53 – Jennifer M. Eaton

“Explain!” Morath demanded.

Yoran shuddered, and glanced at his beloved wife. Deep within, the part of himself that had sold his soul to The Establishment cringed, knowing he had been intimate with a woman tainted with fae filth.

“Daddy?” Marci’s eyes teared.

His heart broken, he tried to speak, forcing his mind not to think of his beloved children as abominations.  His heart constricted as he took his wife’s hands in his own. “The truth, my beloved, is that the fae now outnumber the humans, and The Establishment knows it. If the portal is opened permanently, there will be nothing to stop them from defiling…”

He bit back his words, seeing the fae light in her eyes for the first time.  How hadn’t he seen it sooner?  His nose crinkled with disgust.  He closed his eyes, and swallowed hard. “How can this be true,” he whispered. “Are you sure? Could this not be some sort of fae trickery? Some decadent form of faery witchcraft?”

Natalia shook her head.  “The memories were my own. I have been the key all along.  We were meant to meet, dearest husband, and our love was foretold from the beginning of time.  Our son is the binding force between our two worlds, but you, my husband… you are the one who will lead us. You are the one who will lead my people back to the fertile soils of earth, where we will take our rightful place.”

His jaw fell.  “How can you ask this of me?”
