Looking at the High Council’s faces, Yoran knew he had said too much when he revealed his true beliefs, but it was too late to take it back. He’d figure out a way to get out of trouble, he always did, he thought, and prepared himself to appease the High Council once more. Besides, The President would never act against him. That, he could count on.

“As for you… Protector Sumner, we are all concerned about the direction your philosophy has taken lately. While we all agree democracy is not a system we would ever encourage, openly admitting you see yourself as a dictator is rather difficult to hear. Because that would render us all quite useless, don’t you think?”

The President, Madam Serrano, watched Yoran closely, looking for a reaction that would seal the Council’s decision. She was a beautiful woman in her early forties, and had known Yoran since their youth. Rumor had it they had been sweethearts during their teenage years, and their fathers had been best friends before a mysterious fall-out brought a bitter end to their relationship. But nobody knew the truth for sure, since all the records of their lives had been long gone. And nobody dared ask either one of them.

“Madam Serrano… I apologize, perhaps I misstated my position. I find the council’s direction invaluable, and always will. What I meant to say was that in the context of my ship, it’s imperative that I maintain a tight grip on the entire operation. Especially on the crew. Lax rules will lead to chaos. And I know that the Council is the most dedicated defender against chaos.”

The High Council exchanged glances, then Madam Serrano received subtle nods from her fellow members. She hid a smile by biting her lips for a second, then she looked straight at Yoran and spoke with a resounding voice.

“Indeed, Protector, we are. Yet it seems that chaos has been following you around lately, despite our best attempts to curb it. So it’s time we took more drastic measures.”

She stood up, towering even higher over Yoran, who was trying hard to maintain a pleasant smile and not clench his jaws. “Beginning today, Sir, I will oversee the mission to defeat the Fae. And you will be working for me.”

Yay!  Write a Story with Me is back!  (This is my little Christmas present to myself.)  I have to admit that people have been writing away during our little break and…..  Ooooooo I feel a battle brewing! Enjoy the ride!

Now remember, we’ve got a battle on the verge of rocking.  Marci is tied to a table in her father’s ship, her sister is flying out in space, and the very lives of the faeries are on the line.  What the heck is going to happen?  Let’s see!

23 – Aparnauteur

“Poor girl, scared her, didn’t we? For a moment I thought our invisibilatrix was toast.”

“Not a chance. As for the little glitch, she’s the only one who saw us. I doubt that her addled brain would have pieced it together. Meanwhile, I want you to check if any of Janosc’s waspy pals are about to join us on our precipice rendezvous. He is paranoid enough not to trust his own self in the operation.”

“It’s all under control, Mme. I sent a Morse to Marriott. He’ll take care of those red dots flanking our target. Our target, meanwhile, drifted to two and a half sea miles port side. They seem to be having trouble keeping an even keel. I am guessing their vessel is as old as Yoran. It’s funny how we’re part of the same—Oh no! What did I just say–forgive me for my indiscretion–he’s your father–what I meant to say was–I am extremely sorry, Mme Sian”

“Oh, don’t makes a hames of it now, Jodi. Just keep up with the update. When are we getting Marci out of the vessel?”

“I slipped the sonambulator into Bethany’s toque. She never removes it when she travels. It emits a sound whose frequency would tell us when’s the right time.”

“Perfect. We now wait for your pesky pal to do what she does best—eavesdrop”

Yoran had known for some time that Sian was trailing him. What he didn’t know was which daughter to choose.

Write a Story with Me Part 20 – Throwing bethany under the bus with J.Keller Ford

Jenny Keller Ford kicks it back to the main storyline this week. So, What’s happening with Marci? What does Yoran have to do? Take it away, Jenny!

20 J. Keller Ford

Yoran left the cloaked air rider hovering as he retrieved Marci’s limp body from the house. Janosc was waiting in the sleep cabin when Yoran returned.

“Did you get the medicines I asked for?”

Yoran nodded while covering Marci with a blanket. “Yes. It’s all there. Every last drop of it. And the weapons, too. Now let’s go.” Yoran made his way forward to the cockpit.

“Not so fast, Yoran Sumner,” Janosc said. “There is but one more item we need before we depart.”

“I refuse to get you anything else” Yoran said, his temper bubbling beneath his skin.

“Then your daughter shall die.”

Yoran advanced. “Why you—”

Janosc thrust his arms before him, his palms facing Yoran. A bubble of green light pulsed forward, buffering the space between him and the commander. “Do not threaten me, human, or our deal is off. Understood?”

Marci moaned in her sleep, uttering nonsense.

“Delirium is setting in,” Janosc said. “We have little time. The choice is yours.”

Yoran clenched his fists, but his anger was pointless. He had to save Marci. He placed his hands on the overhead compartment. “What do you want me to do?”

The bubble of light vanished. Janosc flitted forward. “I want you to go inside and get Bethany. She’s coming with us.”

Yoran’s eyes widened. “What?” he shouted. “Why?”

“Because she is responsible for Marci’s illness, therefore she is necessary for her cure.”

“Responsible how? What are you talking about?”

“Why don’t you ask her?”

But then, Sian had lost the fear of awkwardness within a tenday of her Recall. Within two, she had begun to learn – although she had had to be very careful, in those early days before she’d known enough to move without being seen…

That had taken nearly a full turning of Argot around its sun – a length of time she had once thought almost infinite. Now, though, she had circled so many planets that the only time that mattered anymore was that the Establishment demanded of her, and the flow of her own life. No planet could determine time for her, now.

She slipped through the honeycombed lattices of the Establishment Revisionist Division,

Write a Story with Me – Part 17 – What’s the other Daughter up to? with Bryn Jones

If you are looking for the Spooky Halloween blog hop, click HERE

Well, Here’s an interesting switch.  Here’s a look into the life of the rebel daughter from Bryn Jones.

17 (Bryn Jones)

So it turns out that being a rebel has its perks. Three years away from home and Sian’s life was completely different. The Establishment had developed an almost foolproof way of dealing with those who chose to speak out against the ‘perceived’ authoritarian system that ruled Argot and the other city states. Give them a job. Put someone in a position where they have power over the lives of others and almost all will toss their noble ideals to the side.

Sian understood this. She knew she was being manipulated into acquiescence with the Establishment order. The job was difficult and at first had taken a huge toll on her emotionally, but she was good at it. Extremely good. She was now part of an elite unit within the Establishment given responsibility for the cleanup operations that are run once the Planetary Raiders have completed their mission brief. This usually involved inserting new Establishment friendly politicians, but sometimes more drastic measures were required to quash rebellions before they escalated.

Her current assignment was going to be a tough one. Rumour had it that the Council of Argot had been infiltrated by the resurgent fairy population. She would have to return to her home planet to perform a delicate surgical operation and this carried with it the possibility of a chance encounter with her family. If she accidentally bumped into her father, Yoran, things could get awkward. Very Awkward.

Write a Story with Me – Part 14 – Plans and Schemes – What will he do? with Richard Leonard

Hello there!  If your new over here, Write a Story with me is a little idea I came up with for my Blogiversary.  It’s a story I started in mid July, and a different author ever week adds an additional 250-ish words to the story.  When they are done, the next person gets tagged and they are on their way!

It’s great fun because it’s a super flash-fiction challenge, because you NEVER KNOW what you’re going to get hit with.  You can’t plan, because you don’t know what kind of curve-ball the person in front of you will throw.

Sound like fun?  It is!

If you’d like to catch up, a list of the previous segments is below.

Today, we have Richard Leonard up at bat.  Take it away, Richard!

14 (Richard Leonard)

Yoran fought the urge to crush the evil little monster hovering just beyond arm’s reach. He guessed Janosc spoke in a falsetto voice to put him off guard, which it certainly did. Staring fiercely at the disgusting wasp-like creature buzzing before him, he knew what was to eventuate and could see no way to avoid it.

“What do you want? Speak quickly, we have little time.”

“Isn’t it obvious?”, said Jonasc in his normal gruff voice. “You’ve seen this before, Yoran. You know it’s terminal. I can help heal your daughter… but only if you help protect my world.”

“How?”

“Well… it involves taking her to through the Portal. However, I’m not sure if I’m prepared to do so. It’s a big risk for us.”

The color of Yoran’s face deepened as the veins in his neck swelled. How dare this vile bug hold his precious little Marci to ransom. Her life traded for the promise of allowing the beetle fairies and their world to thrive in his beloved county? For any other father the decision would be easy. But Yoran can never be seen to have made such a choice. Marci’s sacrifice would be expected of him.

SO… does he save Marci or not?  Hop on over to Richard’s site to read the rest of his section.  Have fun!  http://richardleonard.wordpress.com/2012/10/01/write-a-story-with-jennifer-m-eaton-part-14
