#69 – Norah Jansen “Follow”

Natalia watched Morath surreptitiously. For all that the queen seemed to have her family’s best interests at heart Natalia feared that if it came to a showdown between the Fae and her husband Morath might sacrifice them all for the greater good as she saw it. Natalia pondered. Should she stay here and wait for the Establishment to make their next move and hope that her husband would return or go back to the safety of their own home and wait there for Yoran to make his way back to them. Or maybe they needed to disappear as well, where no Fae could find them.

Marci & Bethany huddled together, still crying over their father’s disappearance. There would be no help from there. Natalia turned towards her eldest daughter. Sian was watching her and raised one eyebrow in query. Natalia inclined her head and signaled Sian to follow her.

The baby was clasped loosely to her chest as she tried to give an impression of nonchalance while walking away. She looked behind once to make sure Sian was following and when she saw her daughter’s distinctive hair bobbing and weaving through the crowds of milling Fae she carried on.

An oak tree stood on the banks of the little stream that ran through the settlement – wide as a house at the base there was plenty of room to hide from sight as Natalia waited for Sian to appear.

The girl strode past the tree without noticing Natalia but twirled around when her mother hissed her name.

“What is the matter? Why are you skulking around out here?”

Natalia took a deep breath and rearranged her son in her arms before she could summon the courage to say the words aloud.

“I don’t trust Morath.”

Write a Story With Me # 55 – “You’re dying, aren’t you?” by Jenny Keller Ford

55 – Jenny Keller Ford “You’re dying, aren’t you?”

Marci tilted her head back taking in Sian’s pinched face and folded arms. She backed away and shook her head. “You. This is all your fault.”

Sian’s smirk fell away. “What are you babbling about? How is any of this my fault? Look behind you.” Sian gestured toward Yoran. “He’s the true traitor.” Sian approached her father with an over-confident swagger. “It’s true, isn’t it?” she said, circling Yoran. “You sided with the Establishment. You were fed their lies and you devoured them as truths.” She stopped before Yoran, her eyes searching his. “You relinquished your daughter and never once did you come looking for me.”

“That’s a lie.” Yoran said. “I searched for you for many moons, but you were gone, kidnapped by these filthy creatures.”

“I AM one of these filthy creatures,” Sian shouted. “So are my mother and my siblings.” She pressed closer to Yoran, her eyes blazing in anger. “That disgusts you, doesn’t it? It makes you ill knowing you’ve bedded a fae and begat fae children.”

“Do not speak to me in such a manner. I am your father!”

“You are nothing to me!”

“Stop it!” Marci shouted. “You know nothing, Sian. Tell her, Daddy. Tell her how the Establishment tried to kill you the night you met with the fae king and begged for Sian’s life. Tell her about the bomb they put inside of you to keep you loyal to them, and the device they embedded to track your moves.” Marci opened her palm revealing an array of small, smashed cyber parts covered in blood. “Tell her how they ended up like this.” She glanced up at her father, tears sliding down her cheeks. “I found them in your cell.” She sniffled. “You’re dying, aren’t you, Daddy?”

Write a Story with Me #53: “How can you ask this of me?” with Jennifer Eaton

53 – Jennifer M. Eaton

“Explain!” Morath demanded.

Yoran shuddered, and glanced at his beloved wife. Deep within, the part of himself that had sold his soul to The Establishment cringed, knowing he had been intimate with a woman tainted with fae filth.

“Daddy?” Marci’s eyes teared.

His heart broken, he tried to speak, forcing his mind not to think of his beloved children as abominations.  His heart constricted as he took his wife’s hands in his own. “The truth, my beloved, is that the fae now outnumber the humans, and The Establishment knows it. If the portal is opened permanently, there will be nothing to stop them from defiling…”

He bit back his words, seeing the fae light in her eyes for the first time.  How hadn’t he seen it sooner?  His nose crinkled with disgust.  He closed his eyes, and swallowed hard. “How can this be true,” he whispered. “Are you sure? Could this not be some sort of fae trickery? Some decadent form of faery witchcraft?”

Natalia shook her head.  “The memories were my own. I have been the key all along.  We were meant to meet, dearest husband, and our love was foretold from the beginning of time.  Our son is the binding force between our two worlds, but you, my husband… you are the one who will lead us. You are the one who will lead my people back to the fertile soils of earth, where we will take our rightful place.”

His jaw fell.  “How can you ask this of me?”

Write a Story with Me # 36 – Daddy wake up! by Jennifer M. Eaton

I’m bringing it back to the battle string this week, ’cause that’s where the party’s at!  Let’s rock!

36 – Jennifer M. Eaton – “Daddy, wake up!”

Yoran lulled in and out of consciousness.  Echoing blasts of battle and the throttling of wind pummeled his mind.

“Daddy, Daddy wake up.” Marci’s voice seeped into his internal chaos.

Oh! What a foul ogre a mind could be, taunting him with the voice of his beloved daughter, when he knew she was lost.  The vision of meek, weary Marci falling to her death grated against his soul, tearing and ripping to the point of insanity.

“Daddy!”

Yoran blinked twice.  His eyes stung, accosted by the sunlight shining from above.  Heaven?  Was this the great light he was to travel to?

A dark figure blotted out the sun, a form not unlike a small girl.  “Daddy, can you hear me?”  Tiny finger grabbed his shoulders, and his body shook.  “Daddy, can you feel me?”

A larger figure passed through his vision, and his face stung as a cold hand slapped him nearly off the table.

“Let’s see if he felt that.” The angry woman’s voice sliced into his heart–the same voice he’d heard pluck him from the sky.

“Sian?” His raspy voice barely sputtered the name.  His eyes focused, and she re-folded her arms, her eyes hard and glaring, just as they had been the last time he woke. She was really there.  This wasn’t a dream.

Mustering all his energy, he pulled himself to a sitting position.  His head pounded as he reached out to his eldest daughter.

Sian spat on the floor beside him.  “Save your strength, Father.  You’re going to need it.”

Yay!  Write a Story with Me is back!  (This is my little Christmas present to myself.)  I have to admit that people have been writing away during our little break and…..  Ooooooo I feel a battle brewing! Enjoy the ride!

Now remember, we’ve got a battle on the verge of rocking.  Marci is tied to a table in her father’s ship, her sister is flying out in space, and the very lives of the faeries are on the line.  What the heck is going to happen?  Let’s see!

23 – Aparnauteur

“Poor girl, scared her, didn’t we? For a moment I thought our invisibilatrix was toast.”

“Not a chance. As for the little glitch, she’s the only one who saw us. I doubt that her addled brain would have pieced it together. Meanwhile, I want you to check if any of Janosc’s waspy pals are about to join us on our precipice rendezvous. He is paranoid enough not to trust his own self in the operation.”

“It’s all under control, Mme. I sent a Morse to Marriott. He’ll take care of those red dots flanking our target. Our target, meanwhile, drifted to two and a half sea miles port side. They seem to be having trouble keeping an even keel. I am guessing their vessel is as old as Yoran. It’s funny how we’re part of the same—Oh no! What did I just say–forgive me for my indiscretion–he’s your father–what I meant to say was–I am extremely sorry, Mme Sian”

“Oh, don’t makes a hames of it now, Jodi. Just keep up with the update. When are we getting Marci out of the vessel?”

“I slipped the sonambulator into Bethany’s toque. She never removes it when she travels. It emits a sound whose frequency would tell us when’s the right time.”

“Perfect. We now wait for your pesky pal to do what she does best—eavesdrop”

Yoran had known for some time that Sian was trailing him. What he didn’t know was which daughter to choose.
