Write a Story with Me # 35 – In the Sky Above by Susan Roebuck

Susan Rocan fills in a little space that was left hanging.  Take it away, Susan!

35 – Susan Roebuck – Battle string – in the sky – fills space before #29

Janosc’s squadron dodged cumulus clouds, flying through the chaos.

They observed Marci’s ship and the Establishment shuttle that thought it was invisible. Wing-commander Briss drew level with Janosc.

“Captain,” he said, “The old ship is off course, it’s entering the Atom Stream and getting too close to the Establishment shuttle which is equipped with a lock-on and destroy system in such cases.”

No sooner were the words out of his mouth than the Shuttle opened fire.

“Fangs out!” Janosc cried, pointing his sword downwards. “Dog-fight.”

It was too late – the blast had broken Marci’s ship apart. “Idiotic shuttle. Inexperienced…” To his horror, Marci’s bed with Bethany hanging on for dear life was heading for the ocean. Magic was the only option. He pulled the speaker on his helmet closer and ordered his squadron: “Bubble. Bubble. Marci and bed. Repeat. Marci and bed. Get her to the Precipice and the Portal home, boys.”

As the force of their combined magic curved downwards, Janosc cursed. “Damn cones!” He should’ve brought more experienced magicians with him; apart from Briss they were greenhorns. “Too much magic,” he cried.

A rainbow-colored bubble formed around Marci’s bed, but extended onwards encompassing Yoran’s falling body as well. And that wasn’t all. “It’s caught the Establishment ship too! Now they’ll all be transported to the mystic portal. Can it get worse?”

Briss’s calm voice spoke in his ear. “Black object, Captain, speeding our way. Four o’clock. Looks like someone on a broomstick.”

Janosc closed his eyes. That’s all he needed. Mother.

Write a Story with Me Part 29 – An unexpected Savior by Kai Damian

Surprise!  I’m changing the day for “Write a Story with Me” from Tuesdays to Mondays.  Why?  Well, ’cause I can!  Here we go!

Three weeks ago we left Janelle the Fae Queen while getting help to our poor Mommy in labor. Then we left them to be thrown back into the heat of battle where Marci is still tied to a bed with a huge cliffhanger!  Than Bethany fell out of the sky.  But is Daddy dead?  I can’t stand it anymore!!!!!!!

29 – Kai Damian – Battle String

“Marci,” Yoran screamed as he opened his eyes, but his cry was lost in the chaos that trapped him like a coffin of wind and fire. The ship was crumbling around him and his men were sliding down into the water, lifeless. Covered in blood and hanging by a thread—literally, as his jacket had hooked itself onto an open cabinet door—he watched his two young daughters jump off the ship and disappear into the tempest below them. As he reached for them, screaming their names, he heard a snap and started rapidly sliding down toward nothingness once again.

“Please keep Natalia safe,” he prayed, and closed his eyes, ready for the end. “Good bye my loves.”

“Not today” he heard a woman’s voice behind him, and felt her grab his hand and pull him after her. As he opened his eyes, he and his mysterious savior were free falling into the eye of the storm that had appeared out of thin air before the ship went down. All he could see in the midst of the gray cloud that engulfed them was long, red hair flowing behind a young woman dressed in a blue starship uniform. Their hands were welded together, and the moment he allowed himself to feel her grip, he knew. The pain of losing his eldest for the second time hit him like a boulder coming off a steep mountain and he lost consciousness once again.

“Daddy, daddy, wake up,” Marci cried. Yoran opened his eyes to find his two youngest daughters shaking his arm as they knelt beside him on the frigid marble floor of an opulent room open to the sky above. Behind them, with a stern look on her face and her arms tightly crossed, stood his stolen child, his beloved Sian.

Write a Story with Me Part 28 – Oh Snap! Who is that? by Julie Catherine

Yay!  It’s Write a Story with Me day!

Two weeks ago we left Janelle the Fae Queen while getting help to our poor Mommy in labor. Then we left them to be thrown back into the heat of battle with a huge cliffhanger!  Is Daddy dead?  Let’s see if we can find out!

28 – Julie Catherine Vigna – Battle String

She couldn’t tear her eyes away; willed the rust of bile down while bitter tears singed her hair as it whipped across her cheeks. Helpless and terrified, she watched the rain of bodies as they cascaded around her, desperately trying to keep her focus on the one that was her father. Something landed with a thump on the bed and bounced off.

Marci craned her neck towards the movement, just in time to see the hand gripping the bedrail. Unable to help herself she stared in horrified fascination, her heart thudding with pain and fear. Marci’s relief was palpable as Bethany’s toque appeared over the edge of the rail and she hauled herself up, battling against the strong winds that buffeted them both.

“Marci, you’re alive Thank God!” Bethany crawled towards her sister and frantically loosened the knots that tied her sister into the bed. Her eyes were huge and wild with fright as she worked feverishly at the bindings. She sobbed, clinging to her sister for reassurance as much as relief. “I am so, so sorry; I never meant you to come to any harm— I swear. Can you ever forgive me for my foolishness?”

Marci didn’t understand what Bethany was saying, but now wasn’t the time to ask questions. She was just happy to have her sister there with her. If they survived there would be time to sort it all out later.  And it was very likely they wouldn’t make it, for the bed was swooping down towards the icy waters at an alarming rate.

A raspy voice whispered in her ear; it sounded familiar, but she couldn’t quite place it. “NOW— JUMP!”

Yay!  Write a Story with Me is back!  (This is my little Christmas present to myself.)  I have to admit that people have been writing away during our little break and…..  Ooooooo I feel a battle brewing! Enjoy the ride!

Now remember, we’ve got a battle on the verge of rocking.  Marci is tied to a table in her father’s ship, her sister is flying out in space, and the very lives of the faeries are on the line.  What the heck is going to happen?  Let’s see!

23 – Aparnauteur

“Poor girl, scared her, didn’t we? For a moment I thought our invisibilatrix was toast.”

“Not a chance. As for the little glitch, she’s the only one who saw us. I doubt that her addled brain would have pieced it together. Meanwhile, I want you to check if any of Janosc’s waspy pals are about to join us on our precipice rendezvous. He is paranoid enough not to trust his own self in the operation.”

“It’s all under control, Mme. I sent a Morse to Marriott. He’ll take care of those red dots flanking our target. Our target, meanwhile, drifted to two and a half sea miles port side. They seem to be having trouble keeping an even keel. I am guessing their vessel is as old as Yoran. It’s funny how we’re part of the same—Oh no! What did I just say–forgive me for my indiscretion–he’s your father–what I meant to say was–I am extremely sorry, Mme Sian”

“Oh, don’t makes a hames of it now, Jodi. Just keep up with the update. When are we getting Marci out of the vessel?”

“I slipped the sonambulator into Bethany’s toque. She never removes it when she travels. It emits a sound whose frequency would tell us when’s the right time.”

“Perfect. We now wait for your pesky pal to do what she does best—eavesdrop”

Yoran had known for some time that Sian was trailing him. What he didn’t know was which daughter to choose.

Write a Story with Me – Part 16 – The Unmentionable by Shannon Blue Christensen

Sooo… The plot thicken this week as Shannon blue brings in the internal thought… and a brand new backstory.  Hmmmmm…. what a tangled life daddy leads, huh?

If you are new to Write a Story with Me, please scroll down to see a list of previous posts.  Catch up on the story and have a great time!

“Bethany? Don’t just stand there. Help your mother find the herbs she needs for Marci.”

Bethany hovered for a moment, uncertain. She looked again at Marci, whose lips were beginning to turn blue, and hurried after her mother.

Yoran quickly turned back to Janosc, who had hidden behind the door while Yoran gave orders to Bethany. Janosc’s eyes glimmered. His lips quirked in what was intended to be a benevolent-appearing smile.

Yoran believed The Establishment was pure, regardless of sacrifice required. The guidances dictated by the ruling body preserved a peaceful existence for citizens. Like most young men, he was proud to be selected for service. Ridding the world of beings competing for power was noble.

A few years earlier, his unmentionable daughter was taken. She had acted out in school, asking why the Establishment came to power, who decided what was good. One evening his coworkers arrived. A summons signed “The Establishment” stated that they were taking the girl away. Yoran was warned to never think of her again.

Afterwards, his colleagues acted as if the girl has never existed, yet it was months before the usual banter resumed. The hairs on his neck told him that he was being watched. He began looking for others with hollow eyes and hesitation in their step. He wondered.

A year or two later, he met Janosc on a routine raid. He never looked the criminals in the eye, at first because he was sure they didn’t deserve the attention, now because he was afraid they did. As they tossed Janosc in the back of the wagon, the creature spoke, “I know where she is, you know. She’s not dead. They won’t allow it.”

Yoran fumbled the ropes. Janosc laughed, “Yes, wouldn’t you love to know?” Yoran pretended carelessness.

“Yes, mother.” answered Bethany.  She quickly took the tray laden with tea from her, which had been rattling precariously as it balanced on top of her swollen stomach.

“What are you doing skulking around out here?”

“What’s going on?  Is Marci okay?” she deflected, concentrating on keeping her face a mask of sisterly concern.

“She certainly is not, Bethany.  I’m afraid your sister seems to be in quite a bad way.”

Her mother carried on down the corridor and gently pushed open the door to Marci’s room, beckoning with her hand that Bethany should follow.  On entering, Bethany’s eyes quickly flicked round the room in an attempt to locate the fairy her father had been talking to, but there was no sign of him.  Her mother’s commotion in the corridor had obviously alerted them to their presence.

Bethany, remembering why she was supposed to be there, turned to look at Marci.  She gasped

Write a Story with Me – Part 14 – Plans and Schemes – What will he do? with Richard Leonard

Hello there!  If your new over here, Write a Story with me is a little idea I came up with for my Blogiversary.  It’s a story I started in mid July, and a different author ever week adds an additional 250-ish words to the story.  When they are done, the next person gets tagged and they are on their way!

It’s great fun because it’s a super flash-fiction challenge, because you NEVER KNOW what you’re going to get hit with.  You can’t plan, because you don’t know what kind of curve-ball the person in front of you will throw.

Sound like fun?  It is!

If you’d like to catch up, a list of the previous segments is below.

Today, we have Richard Leonard up at bat.  Take it away, Richard!

14 (Richard Leonard)

Yoran fought the urge to crush the evil little monster hovering just beyond arm’s reach. He guessed Janosc spoke in a falsetto voice to put him off guard, which it certainly did. Staring fiercely at the disgusting wasp-like creature buzzing before him, he knew what was to eventuate and could see no way to avoid it.

“What do you want? Speak quickly, we have little time.”

“Isn’t it obvious?”, said Jonasc in his normal gruff voice. “You’ve seen this before, Yoran. You know it’s terminal. I can help heal your daughter… but only if you help protect my world.”

“How?”

“Well… it involves taking her to through the Portal. However, I’m not sure if I’m prepared to do so. It’s a big risk for us.”

The color of Yoran’s face deepened as the veins in his neck swelled. How dare this vile bug hold his precious little Marci to ransom. Her life traded for the promise of allowing the beetle fairies and their world to thrive in his beloved county? For any other father the decision would be easy. But Yoran can never be seen to have made such a choice. Marci’s sacrifice would be expected of him.

SO… does he save Marci or not?  Hop on over to Richard’s site to read the rest of his section.  Have fun!  http://richardleonard.wordpress.com/2012/10/01/write-a-story-with-jennifer-m-eaton-part-14
