Part 66 – Joe Owens

“Protector Sumner, you were in great danger. We overestimated the strength of their forces. They have added to their contingent above our estimates,” a supporting officer spoke.

“The queen, Morath, has incredible powers. We must remove her from the equation. The young queen will not be as formidable as a foe.”

“You took a very big chance with this plan. The Establishment is pleased with your commitment.”

Yoran turned to look at the officer, a question in his mind. The question morphed into a feeling of uneasiness as the younger man continued to speak.

“It was almost like you knew nothing would happen to you. No one else offered to take your place and there are several officers my age who need to prove ourselves for the chance to be promoted. A man so important to our cause as you should not be taking such chances.

“Is there something you want to say son?” Yoran asked, irritation flowing with his words. To call another officer son was a strong insult, one Yoran used frequently.

“I think the confidence you had in the plan comes from more than just a belief in our forces.”

Yoran’s gut tightened with this statement. He blinked silently, which the young man took as an invitation to continue.

“Perhaps you have an advantage none of the rest of us have. A connection that means you have no reason to fear contact with our enemy.”

“Are you excusing me of consorting with our enemy?”

“Yes sir, I am.”

Part 65 – Danielle Ackley-McPhail “Glamore”- http://www.sidhenadaire.com

East/Jenelle breathed deep of the magic of the Gleaming Tree, drew it in and made it their own. As the Establishment dragon ship plied the skies they fed the tendril of mage energy trailing from the vessel, latched on to Yoran. They fed it and shaped it, sharpened the edge, then by their will pressed it against the technological governor embedded in his brain, the one control he had been unable to extricate. That malevolent chip had turned a loving father into a hate-filled tool. The fate of his family and the world depended on East/Jenelle’s successfully deactivating that program.

“Ah!” the melding of elemental being and royal fae cried out, the building pressure of the magic proving nearly too much for even Jenelle’s fae nature. And still they drew more as the control chip somehow fought back, sending threads of fire down the connection to burn away the cord of mage energy. The fae strengthened the bond even as the technology sought to sever it. The magic flared in the sky. Its current jammed against the technology and finally overcame it.

East/Jenelle sensed as Yoran, trapped in the ship above, cried out and crumbled to his knees as the magic killed the cybernetic chip that had forced him to act against his nature. They gasped, and quickly shrouded him in a seeming. If they were to bring down the Establishment and reinstate harmony between Human and Fae, it was important that those in command believed Yoran remained their tool…for now, anyway.

Part 64 – Richard Leonard “Compromise”

Yoran’s smirk quickly disappeared as he walked the rest of the way through the grey metal corridors of his ship. The news that his wife of many years was in fact one half Fae, and by extension, his children one quarter Fae, was indeed a severe blow. His life-long ambition, his sole purpose in life prior to this day was to rid the world of the filthy fae. The discovery that his family shared their poisonous blood had diluted that ambition just as the fae had diluted the pure blood he’d given his children. His crew and the rest of the Planetary Raiders must never learn of this.

He had very near lost his family once. Sian he had all but given up as a lost cause before she returned after so many years. Bethany’s foolishness came close to claiming Marci. And his beloved wife, almost taken by the complications of childbirth. She survived, yet she is still lost, as she is not the woman he thought he married.

Could he still achieve his goal and save his family? Perhaps with a …

63 – Kai Damian – “Double Agent”

Morath had no recourse. The look that passed between her and Yoran told him what he needed to know.

Yoran looked at his wife, broken on the ground, despair engulfing her like a gray veil. His daughters were behind them, crying—even Sian, the strong one, was shedding silent tears.

“Natalia,” he whispered and kneeled next to his wife. “Look at me.” He lifted up her chin. Those eyes, he thought. Those beautiful green eyes watching him lovingly. Despite Natalia’s sorrow, he could still see the love behind it, and his heart beat a little faster.

“Yoran, please, there must be a way,” she pleaded.

“Yes, there is a way.” He looked her in the eye and smiled sadly.

“No, Yoran,” Natalia cried.

62 – Julie Catherine – “The Steel Dragon”

The dust cloud swelled and Morath seemed to grow before their eyes as her form expanded into a gigantic wave. As she reared to expel her force against the Establishment fleet, a monstrous steel dragon blasted out of the sky, hurtling it’s huge body directly towards the Fey. Its ice-blue breath shot a laser beam that swirled around Natalia and the baby, surrounding the two and forcing the infant from Natalia’s arms.

“NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!”

Natalia shrieked in agony and fell to the ground, writhing in pain and shock. In the seconds the group were immobilized with fear, the vortex lifted the baby into the cold belly of the steel dragon, and it sped back to the protection of the Establishment fleet before the wave could be launched.

Morath cried out in anger, and the dust wave subsided as she sank to the ground, grinding her fists in the dust in despair. They had been so close to annihilating the Establishment! But she could not risk harming the infant, and the High Commander had counted on that.

“Peoples of the Fey!” The voice boomed through the air, surrounding them with its force. “You have one hour to surrender the traitor Captain Yoran to us, or the child will die – and all Fey will die with him!”

Natalia shook her head wildly and her eyes pleaded to Morath. “Please, they will kill us all, whether they have my husband or not. There must be a way to save my baby!”

61 – Ravena Guron – “I accept My Fate”

Silence fell between the two. Jenelle held the dagger loosely in her hand, wishing she could let it fall. But the dagger clung to her grasp, almost as if it sensed it would not find its final sheath in Morath if she had her way. Dust swirled up around Jenelle and she breathed it in. Fighting the urge to cough, Jenelle focused instead on the rose-like smell which wafted up her nose. Surely dust should not smell so sweet?

Morath watched as Jenelle’s face, full of anguish, went blank, like a chalkboard which had been erased. When the girl opened her mouth to speak, a harsh, grainy voice rang out, not at all like Jenelle’s usually quiet tones.

“The breeze from the East comes to you in your time of need, to help you do what must be done to finish this war. Do you accept this fate?”

Morath’s throat clenched. In the back of her mind, the old stories about the breeze from the East stirred, stories which explained why the breeze came only to the aid of the Fae. Blood calls to blood, Fae call to Fae.

“I accept my fate.” Morath threw her shoulders back. She would not be perished, would instead serve her people in a final, ultimate way, a fate she had always wanted. The fact that the breeze, and not Jenelle, controlled the hand holding the dagger did nothing to make the final blow feel less like a kiss delivered from a much loved friend.

Morath smiled as she felt her body dissolving into gentle wind, as the old breeze from the East died down to make way for the new one. This breeze floated through the air, towards the Establishment fleet, for a second swirling up dust to create the shape of something which resembled Morath’s small frame.

60— Vanessa-Jane Chapman “I can’t do it!”

Jenelle wrestled with the confusing emotions that surged through her. Morath was wise, the wisest one, and if she said that is what must happen, then who was Jenelle to disobey? And yet, to perish her, it was unthinkable.

What would Janosc do? Oh Janosc, what would you do?

“I can’t do it Morath, don’t ask me to, it’s not fair!”

“It has nothing to do with fairness. I’m not asking you to do it, I’m telling you to, it is the only way.” Morath gripped Jenelle’s wrist, and placed a gleaming silver dagger in her palm. Instinctively Jenelle’s trembling fingers closed around it. “There is no choice child! And no more time. Do it now.” The steely determination in her voice drove through Jenelle.

Jenelle was aware of the trail of tears streaking down both sides of her face, and a pain deep in her gut. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw her arm raise up high, dagger clenched tight. She felt dismembered from it, and yet the dagger was hot and burned into her skin. Held high, her arm shook violently, white knuckles protruding.

“Do it!” Morath’s voice pierced through the air and she buried her face into the dirt, certain of her fate. A fate that may have come to fruition had it not been for the breeze from the East. Fae legend told tale of the breeze from the East; nobody knew for sure what it was, only that it would come when the time was due. It arrived first at ground level, whirling its way snake-like around Jenelle’s feet and swiftly moving up her legs. Morath felt it too, her head lifted from the ground as Jenelle’s dagger-clenched hand dropped limply to her side.

59—Nicky Wells “Do it now”

From the castle tower, Morath and Jenelle watched the Establishment ship crash into the waves. It floated for a moment but quickly capsized and sank. The other female fae let out a cheer and clapped their hands, sensing victory. As they broke contact with each other, the protective shield over the city collapsed, and the Establishment fleet instantly stepped up its attack.

“This is the end.” Morath spoke quietly as missiles whistled through the air.

“It can’t be,” Jenelle protested fiercely. “The blood sacrifice has been made, we can renew the shield, Janosc had dealt one of their ships a deadly blow, he can do more…”

“It’s not enough.”

A trickle of dread rose up Jenelle’s back. There was a quiet determination about Morath that made her uneasy.

“Fae,” Jenelle shouted at the top of her voice. “Fae, hold hands and re-forge the shield. Quickly.”

The female fae joined their energies once more. The shield began to form again, but it was fragile and patchy.

Morath rose above them and commanded their attention. “This is the end. This war must finish. Humankind must perish.”

“But Morath—”

“If I perish, humankind will perish with me. It is the only way.” Morath assumed her human form and fell hard on the ground. “Perish me. Perish me as I am now, human and mortal. Do it. Now.”

“Morath, no!” Jenelle wrapped her Queen in a protective embrace. “No,” she sobbed. “Not you.”

“Do it now!” Morath decreed with finality.

58 – Elin Gregory “If we die, we die together.”

The three formations, formed their arrowheads and idled while Janosc consulted with Briss and Dolor, the head of formation three.

“A head-on attack is out,” Dolor said. “Look at those air intakes. I don’t want any of my boys shredded.”

“And I don’t like that shimmer,” Briss added.

Janosc had to agree. At this distance it was unlikely to do much damage, but he had sent out a curse, heavily laced with malice, and it had caromed off the shimmer like a gently tossed apple core. “They have something to block magic,” he said. “If we are going to bring the ship down it must be by physical means and our chances …” He eyed the ship and glanced back at the ranks of fae, wings blurring against the ocean.

“I have an idea.” He explained quickly, divided the force and allocated duties then tuned his mind to Briss’s. “Go back to Jenelle. Her safety is your responsibility.”Janosc could see Briss’s distress in the jerky flutter of his wings, the clenching of his armoured fists.  “You mean too much to me to see you die.”

“No, I will take the aft air intake. If we die, we die together.”

They bumped fists then the groups of fae sped to Janosc’s bidding. He gave the word and their magically contained bundles of seawater hit the air intakes, smashing the fans and flashing into expanding clouds of superheated steam. The ship’s engines screamed and it lurched, sliding towards the angry waves.

57 – Susan Roebuck “Action Stations”

Janosc had been standing at the back of the courtroom while proceedings were taking place, a smile flickering at times, his green eyes glittering and a buzz of annoyance issuing from him as Yoran’s loyalty wavered between the Establishment and the Fae. While Sian had been accusing her father, Janosc folded his arms, crossed his arms and winked at her to show his agreement. He wondered how Yoran would feel if he went back to the Establishment now—he’d only be two inches high. But Janosc’s silent amusement was interrupted as he felt a light touch on his arm.

“Sir,” Briss, his second in command, whispered. “We need you in the war room.”

Once at his operations station, Janosc saw the situation clearly and his heart fluttered in excitement. This is what the special forces had been training for.

“Operation Fae. Action stations,” he ordered.

Briss saluted and within less than a second, he had sent out the command for all forces to be on standby at the launch station.

Within two seconds, Janosc and Briss joined them. Everyone was in position. “They’re three miles from the first barrier which should hold them for a while,” Janosc told his waiting squadron. “We need to act fast.”

Before the words were out of his mouth, two explosions rocked their world. “But they’re too far off,” Briss cried, buckling on his armour, his stance barely wavering from the force of the bombs. “How could they reach us from there?”

“They’re using some kind of stealth missile,” Janosc said grimly, “which we didn’t pick up and they’ve penetrated the three barriers. Are you ready? Operation Fae Formation One, launch.”

Commanded by Briss, Formation One set off, flying low over the tree-tops to avoid radar detection.

Janosc’s Formation Two followed barely a second behind, speeding faster than light. As Formation Three was dispatched behind them, Janosc silently asked the Queen to bless them; they were up against a formidable enemy now—this wasn’t a rusty bucket like Yoran’s ship had been, this was new technology which Janosc had never seen before.
