About My Second Life:

25377165Fifteen-year-old Ana has a good life–she has friends and a boy she likes and a kind mother–but still, she’s haunted by her past; she knows that she lived once before as a girl named Emma, and she still misses her old family. When, by chance in her life now, Ana meets a woman she knew in her previous life, a terrifying memory flashes through her mind of a young girl drowning. Was Emma responsible? And should Ana pay the price? Consumed by guilt, Ana sets out to find out as much as possible about the person she was before and what she had done, only to discover that the family she misses so deeply had dark secrets of its own. To come to terms with her life now, Ana must figure out how to let go of the past.

And here’s some inspirational photos about the book.

The Old Oak Tree

I sat down on the tree roots of the old Oak.

I knew I’d tripped over these roots before…

I recognized the raised and battered roots at my feet

The Sky

I let myself stare into the blue.

The sky was clear and crisp. It was beautiful.

The Water

Catherine’s body is in the water…

cradled by a mass of twigs and branches in the water…

Insomnia

Sleeplessness is part of my life now

I don’t know about you, but I’m scratching my head, intrigued.
Thanks for the though-provoking photos, Faye!

Welcome back to Maldobar! There’s a new Dragonriders series out by @nicoleconway!

Oh! I’m so excited! There’s a brand new Dragondriders series coming out, and today we have Best-Selling Author Nicole Conway with us to talk shop–errr… dragons. And Nicole has a chance to win a Kindle Fire and some signed art!

Hi Nicole! Dragonriders is a super successful series, hanging in the top ten for, like FOREVER. Everyone loves Jaevid!

What challenges did you encounter creating a new series in the same world, and what did you do to keep the stories sounding fresh?

18733563To be perfectly honest, I’ve been writing in the Dragonrider Chronicles world for so long now, it’s harder not to let my mind go there! It’s become a comfort zone for me, because I’m so familiar with the landscape and history. Writing about that world feels like coming home. So I was very excited to get to shed new light and breathe new life into it with a different perspective. 23344338Changing the angle of focus to the lives and culture of the elves seemed like the logical transition since so much of the first series revolved around the human way of life in their kingdom. So I’m taking us back there, but on a different path, to see that world from a completely different viewpoint. Continue reading

The trials and tribulations of writing a sequel

Have you read EMERGE by Tobie Easton? If not, you’re missing out on all the super-mermaidy goodness!

Today Tobie comes to talk about writing a sequel to her #1 best-selling mermaid tale.

And she has a giveaway for a Kindle Fire!

Take it away, Tobie!

27882492I was not prepared for how hard it would be to write the sequel to Emerge. The plot wasn’t difficult; I’d known the storyline of Submerge (and of Book 3, Immerse) since before my agent and I went on submission with the series. In fact, the finished novel that’s coming out this week lines up almost exactly with that outline because the paths these characters needed to travel have always been very clear to me. What I struggled with was the shift from being a writer to being a professional author.

Emerge was the first book I’d written and was the book I’d gotten my agent with (I feel so fortunate every day that it sold and is now on shelves!). 33299927Writing Submerge was therefore a completely different experience than writing Emerge. With Book 1, I wrote on my own schedule and had no one to answer to but myself. I knew very little about the publishing industry at that point and just wrote what I wanted to read without a consideration for how marketable a specific idea was, what I would say about a certain plot point on a panel, what would sell, etc.

While writing a book under contract is absolutely wonderful in that you know you have a professional team in place and whatever you write will become a real book, it also means that WHATEVER YOU WRITE WILL BECOME A REAL BOOK. Continue reading

The best first chapter I’ve ever read. Oh, well.

Forsaken Skies by D. Nolan Clarke (Ebook) DNF I have to say that I was super disappointed in this book. It started out with one of the best first chapters that I have ever read. There is a space ship throttling toward a civilian institution and no one can hail the pilot. Another ship appears that seems to be chasing him. We see the second pilot trying to get the first pilot to give up, and we also see the space-equivalent to an air-traffic controller trying to get the other ships out of the way to reduce the body count if there is a crash.

Well, (minor spoiler) the first ship gets through and the second ship keeps chasing. They we find out the backstory on these two ships’ pilots, and the controller. I was TOTALLY engaged.

From this point on, though, the book fell flat for me. I wanted that same excitement and adventure I found in the beginning. That brilliant pacing, however, did not return. Despite the coming together of a great rag-tag crew, I had to abandon this book after reading about 350 pages, and realizing I had another 300 pages to go. Ummm, no.

Despite being uber interested in the storyline, the pacing didn’t interest me. HOWEVER if you are in to a long, detailed slow-paced space epic, this might totally be the book for you. I did enjoy what was going on… It just did not move fast enough for me.

I challenge you, though, to go to your bookseller and get a sample of this book to absorb the epic-ness of that first chapter. It was enough to keep me reading for an additional 300 pages even after it slowed down considerably. I just wish the rest of it kept pace. (sad face)

Sorry, I can’t get enough of Navy Seals. A review of Fuel for Fire by Juliann Walker

Fuel for Fire by Julianne Walker (Ebook) When a CIA agent’s cover gets blown on a covert operation, her friends (and ex-Navy SEALs) the Black Nights 30166742come to her rescue, but getting her out of England in one piece is going to be harder than they expected.

This book is great fun. There is enough action and adventure to keep thrill junkies like me interested, and enough heat between the CIA agent and one of the SEALs to keep romance readers screaming for more.

So far, I think this is probably my favorite of the Black Nights series from Julieann Walker.

Ummm, why am I holding a gun? A review of Project Pandora by @AdenPolydoros

Project Pandora by Aden Polydoros (Ebook) Wow- what an opening chapter! This book immediately drew me in. 31450642Our main characters are all about 17 years old. They are normal kids attending school, but every once in a while a phone rings, someone speaks some keywords, and these kids are hypnotized into triggering skills they don’t know they had, and they are forced to assassinate people. Once the job is done, they forget and return to their everyday lives. Such a creepy premise!

As we move on, one of the characters starts to lose his programming, and begins to remember his other life when he shouldn’t remember.

I loved this book all the way through, with a slight falling at the end. This is obviously a book one. However, we aren’t given closure to any part of the story in this first installment. I feel like with just an extra chapter the characters could have come full circle and completed something, even if it was an emotional part of the journey.

31450642One character was left up in the air as to their survival. I think this might be the missing element that left me feeling unsatisfied…Not hanging like a cliffhanger, this is different. I think if maybe we either saw that character’s funeral, or experienced their emotions once they woke up… Yeah, I think that is the problem for me… If that one character got closure (and sorry, I felt like there was not closure) I think this book would have rocked it until the end.

So, all this to say, this was a super fun, exciting read. I would suggest, however, waiting until the next book comes out and counting on reading both books back to back if you don’t want to be frustrated with a too-open ending. Otherwise, this feels like you are reading the first half of a book, and then being forced to wait before you can read the second half… if that makes sense. But that is NOT enough reason to miss out on this one. I really enjoyed it a lot and will be looking for the next book.

Four stars, subtracting one only for the almost-an-ending [She twiddles her thumbs, wondering when she can get a copy of the next book]

When a book surprises the heck out of you… A review of The Shadow Queen by CJ Redwine

The Shadow Queen by CJ Redwine (Audiobook) This is a very loose Snow White Retelling, where not only is the evil queen a witch, but Snow white is also a kick-ass witch. The Shadow Queen (Ravenspire, #1)There are no dwarves in this book, but the huntsman is a dragon. Pretty cool stuff!

I enjoyed this book so much more than I expected. I sort of avoided it for a while because I hadn’t been in the mood for a retelling, but this was so different that it just barely fits into the retelling category. For me, the ending was slightly ruined because I knew it was a snow white retelling, and when I connected the dots to the handsome prince character, I kinda knew what would happen, and rather than being upset at the end, I just sat back and waited for the storybook ending.

HOWEVER this in no way muddied my enjoyment for this novel. I’m glad this was a standalone, because always having to get the next book is a little annoying, but also, I would love to read another book in this series. (sigh).

Anyway, I will definitely be looking to more CJ Redwine book in the future.

Life becomes books, and books become life! With Casey Griffin

Welcome back, Casey!

You write this great series about rescue dogs. What role do animals play in your life, and how does that roll over into your books?

26114194Roll over?! Pun intended? Haha.

I think instead of my life rolling over into my books, it was the other way around.

My books began to roll over into my life.

29875913I was at the tail end of writing Must Love Wieners when my partner came into my life, along with his three wonderful kids and, get this, two wiener dogs (they look weirdly similar to the two in the book).

I knew that I must love wieners because I loved his―dogs, that is.

To add to the coincidence, one of his dogs is named―you’re not going to believe this―Casey! You can’t write this stuff!

The series of coincidences proved to me that truth is stranger than fiction.

Awesome story! Thanks for stopping by again, Casey. And as a special treat, Casey has a Rafflecopter giveaway for a $25 Amazon Gift Card and all three adorable puppy books! Ya gotta love that!

His name is Levi Dolson and he’s too gorgeous for his own good. And now he’s gone ahead and charmed her new dachshund. . .

It’s no secret that Zoe doesn’t believe in fairy tales, but that doesn’t stop her from wanting to make sweet music with Levi. While she’s convinced she doesn’t need a man, when someone starts setting one trap after the next to make sure she never plans a wedding ever again, she might need Levi in more ways than she could have imagined. But just how far is Zoe’s hidden enemy willing to go? The only thing Levi knows for sure is that he will do everything in his power to protect the woman who brings music to his soul. Maybe that will prove to Zoe, once and for all, that he is a man worthy of her heart.
