Yoran stared at the figure before him. He was not to be fooled. A beautiful woman she may be, but he had been long trained by the Establishment to know that these vile creatures often turned themselves into delectable beings in order to distract the enemy.

He remembered the knife in his boot. Killing this creature would be child’s play. Then, Yoran thought about the message about the tree’s power that Tangle whispered in his ear.

Doubt edged his mind, but he pushed it back. No, he had to stand firm. He had a job to do, children to protect. The message about the sacred gleaming tree was a hoax. The fairies were trying to manipulate him.

The only power he had for certain was waiting inside his boot.

“You’re the Queen Mother? The wisest of this…band of hooligans? I demand you release us. We’re being held against our will. And if you cannot, then you’re not as powerful or wise as they claim.”

“Your temper and your ignorance are what landed you here, Yoran.”

“Your people shot down my ship, kidnapped me and my family, and imprisoned us. You took Marci elsewhere and no one has come to help me with my injured leg.”

Yoran reached toward his boot, pretending to indicate a wound. Morath leaned forward to look at his leg. His hand slipped into the boot. He pulled out the knife and lunged toward Morath, stabbing her.

She crumpled to the floor, her beauty slipping away.

The lad fearfully entered the confinement cell. The tall human male was an imposing figure, but he was the one to whom Tangle must deliver his grandmother’s message.

He took a step forward, drew himself up to full height, and asked, “Is your name Yoran?”

Yoran frowned at him. “Why do you want to know, boy?”

“I have a message for your ears only from our Queen Mother,” Tangle replied, barely able to stabilize his knocking knees.

“Your Queen’s Mother?” Yoran sneered. “Why would I want to hear anything she had to say?”

“Gran . . . I mean, the Queen Mother is the wisest of our people. She lived in the Before Time and is doing her best to avoid a war between your people and ours.”

“Very well, what is the message?”

Tangle motioned for Yoran to lean down and Tangle whispered into his ear the words his grandmother had told him to say. Yoran stiffened, the significance of the message striking him with the force of a knife to the heart.

Yoran glanced over at Sian, who had stopped pacing to stare at her father and the young fairy. She cocked her head quizzically. Whatever the boy told her father had obviously affected him deeply. There may be hope for him, yet.

When the boy left the room, a beautiful woman took his place at the doorway. Yoran did not see the gleaming wings folded against her back.

“I am Morath,” she said, “We need to talk…”

Morath came to a stop a few feet in front of the building. “I need you to do something for me Tangle,” she said.

“Yes of course Grandmo…I mean, Queen…I mean Queen Gran…oh dear.” He bowed his head and bit his lip. Morath smiled and knelt down. She took his chin gently in her hand and lifted it to look warmly into his vibrant blue eyes.  He met her gaze, and felt the color rising in his cheeks.

“My child,” said Morath. “It matters not what you call me, it matters only what is in your heart. Do you understand?” She kissed him tenderly on the forehead. Tangle wasn’t sure he did understand, but he nodded anyway. “Before I go into the building,” she said. “I need you to take a message in for me. Can you do that?” He nodded. Morath continued. “The message can only be given to Yoran, and you must give it directly to him yourself Tangle. That is most important. Can I trust you to do that?” Tangle nodded again.

“What is the message Queen Grandmother?” he asked. Morath looked around cautiously before leaning forward to whisper into Tangle’s ear.

“The sacred Gleaming Tree yields its leaves only to those who are ready to receive its power,” she said. “Repeat it exactly like that. Yoran will understand.”

“But I don’t,” said Tangle.

“No,” said Morath. “But one day you will. Now go in please, I will wait here. When you have delivered the message to Yoran, and only to Yoran, come back and tell me, and then I will enter alone.”

Write a Story with Me # 40 – With a Clap of the Hands – by Norah Jansen

Norah Jansen debuts to Write a Story with Me and turns a corner and starts heading our two strings back together again.  Take it away, Norah!

40- Norah Jansen – With a clap of the hands

Janelle clapped her hands together and a tall fair haired boy dressed in a multitude of colours appeared at her side.

“This is your eldest grandson. Tangle. Marci’s family is here in the Kingdom and Tangle will take you to them.”

Tangle smiled shyly at Morath. He had heard about his grandmother, the great Queen of the Faeries, but never thought he would actually meet her. Now he was going to be her guide and pride swelled in his chest under her gentle gaze. He hoped all his friends would see him as he led their Queen through the streets of Argot.

Morath felt her heart squeeze as she watched Janelle with her smaller children. They were all so beautiful and Morath had missed out on seeing them being born and growing up. Something else to hold against the humans if she dared to let herself go down that path. This wasn’t the time for hatred; there was a sliver of a chance that what had started out as a potential disaster for her people could be a turning point for both humans and Fae.

She nodded to Tangle to proceed and with a swift backward glance at Janelle, Morath followed her grandson through the streets of Argot. Not many of her people (and none of Tangle’s friends) were around to see their procession but those that were bowed low before racing away to spread the news of their Queen’s return.

Tangle pointed ahead to the large building in the middle of the square. Morath’s ears twitched with apprehension as they approached. This wasn’t the first time a human had been held in this building. She hoped the outcome would be different this time.
