56 – Susan Rocan “A Secret Door”

Natalia, horrified, stared at him.

“It’s not true, is it, my beloved?”

Yoran’s shoulders slumped.

“I’m afraid it is, my dearest Natalia. I had to remove the devices so the troops would not track me to this place, although I fear I may have removed them too late.”

On cue, a thunderous crash rattled the windows, then another – closer this time. Shrieks of terror could be heard amidst more sounds of bombardment.

The courtroom erupted into chaos, as all participants tried to get through the exits. Yoran grabbed Natalia’s arm and directed her to the rear of the building, his daughters following close at his heals. Morath waved to them, exposing a secret door.

“This tunnel will bring you and your family beyond the city limits, where you may be safe. I pray that Janosc and his army are ready to handle this.”

With that, Morath slid the panel shut behind them.

Yoran led his family through the dimly lit passage, his throat constricting with claustrophobia. As each canon shot hit its mark, the ground shook and dirt sprinkled down from the ceiling. Yoran prayed the tunnel would not collapse, burying them all alive.

Meanwhile, Janosc headed for the Establishment’s Airborne Contingency, dodging the laser streams threatening to vaporize his fleet. Morath and Jenelle stood in the tallest castle tower holding hands with other female fae, pooling their energies to form a protective shield over the city. A glow rose up, surrounding the buildings, but would it be strong enough?

55 – Jenny Keller Ford “You’re dying, aren’t you?”

Marci tilted her head back taking in Sian’s pinched face and folded arms. She backed away and shook her head. “You. This is all your fault.”

Sian’s smirk fell away. “What are you babbling about? How is any of this my fault? Look behind you.” Sian gestured toward Yoran. “He’s the true traitor.” Sian approached her father with an over-confident swagger. “It’s true, isn’t it?” she said, circling Yoran. “You sided with the Establishment. You were fed their lies and you devoured them as truths.” She stopped before Yoran, her eyes searching his. “You relinquished your daughter and never once did you come looking for me.”

“That’s a lie.” Yoran said. “I searched for you for many moons, but you were gone, kidnapped by these filthy creatures.”

“I AM one of these filthy creatures,” Sian shouted. “So are my mother and my siblings.” She pressed closer to Yoran, her eyes blazing in anger. “That disgusts you, doesn’t it? It makes you ill knowing you’ve bedded a fae and begat fae children.”

“Do not speak to me in such a manner. I am your father!”

“You are nothing to me!”

“Stop it!” Marci shouted. “You know nothing, Sian. Tell her, Daddy. Tell her how the Establishment tried to kill you the night you met with the fae king and begged for Sian’s life. Tell her about the bomb they put inside of you to keep you loyal to them, and the device they embedded to track your moves.” Marci opened her palm revealing an array of small, smashed cyber parts covered in blood. “Tell her how they ended up like this.” She glanced up at her father, tears sliding down her cheeks. “I found them in your cell.” She sniffled. “You’re dying, aren’t you, Daddy?”

#54 Shan Jeniah Burton

“I’m not asking you, Yoran. It is foretold .”

She accepted the baby from Morath, and settled him to nurse as she moved closer to her husband. “I chose you well, Yoran, and for more than either of us thought.” It was so easy, now, to drop the human form. Iridescent turquoise wings fluttered as if of their own will, allowing her to hover in the air, slightly above him.

He looked up at her . “You are fey.” He wouldn’t admit it, she knew, but his revulsion was blended with fascination.

“You didn’t vow to cherish me only if I was human. We didn’t raise our daughters with love and laughter so you could abandon them if they weren’t just as you imagined. I didn’t bear you a son for you to turn from him, or me. I am Natalia, your wife, as I have always been. These are our children, as they have always been.”

Yoran stared at her, and she could read the passing clouds of emotion in his eyes.

“Enough of this!” Sian snapped the flimsy chains. “It’s a waste of time. If he wants to hold his prejudices at night, rather than you, let him. When he let me be Recalled without a protest, he showed himself a coward. I, at least, have a lot of work to do – and I need Marci to help with the next steps.”

Sian clicked her tongue, and Marci was free, silvery wings flicking forward to brush against her sister’s vermillion.

Write a Story with Me #53: “How can you ask this of me?” with Jennifer Eaton

“Explain!” Morath demanded.

Yoran shuddered, and glanced at his beloved wife. Deep within, the part of himself that had sold his soul to The Establishment cringed, knowing he had been intimate with a woman tainted with fae filth.

“Daddy?” Marci’s eyes teared.

His heart broken, he tried to speak, forcing his mind not to think of his beloved children as abominations.  His heart constricted as he took his wife’s hands in his own. “The truth, my beloved, is that the fae now outnumber the humans, and The Establishment knows it. If the portal is opened permanently, there will be nothing to stop them from defiling…”

He bit back his words, seeing the fae light in her eyes for the first time.  How hadn’t he seen it sooner?  His nose crinkled with disgust.  He closed his eyes, and swallowed hard. “How can this be true,” he whispered. “Are you sure? Could this not be some sort of fae trickery? Some decadent form of faery witchcraft?”

Natalia shook her head.  “The memories were my own. I have been the key all along.  We were meant to meet, dearest husband, and our love was foretold from the beginning of time.  Our son is the binding force between our two worlds, but you, my husband… you are the one who will lead us. You are the one who will lead my people back to the fertile soils of earth, where we will take our rightful place.”

His jaw fell.  “How can you ask this of me?”

Natalia raised her eyes.

“I know quite well what is and what shall be… When I found my family gone, I despaired and threw myself off the Southern Ridge. As I fell, a cellular memory opened the Portal, and I know full well who I am.  The Prophecy of the Seer Desdinova is fulfilled: We will share the child, and he will know the stations of his birth. Blood of Mother and Child must be spilled on the roots of the Sacred Gleaming Tree so it will bloom in multicolor and heal the Necrotic Zone. The Palace of Fae will rise again in the world of Man, and both races will be reunited as they once were.”

Queen Morath embraced her longlost kinswoman, Natalia.

“It is done, child. I have buried the afterbirth amongst the roots. Let there be Peace.”

Yoran struggled uselessly against his bonds.

“I throw myself upon your mercy! I did not know! Natalia, you are my only Guiding Star! I choose my family!”

Sian looked at Yoran in disbelief.

“Father!” she cried.

“Oh Sian, my beloved,” he sobbed. “Please forgive me, I didn’t know!”

Queen Morath smiled.

“All is as it should be. Release them and we will make merry until Evensong.”

Their bonds dissolved and the family reunited. All of a sudden, Yoran shouted.

“Wait! I must confess the real reason the Establishment wants the Fae eradicated!”

All eyes turned toward him expectantly.

Ashamed, he hung his head.

“It is simply a matter of real estate.”

51 – Joe Owens

Even as Morath’s words echoed in Natalia’s ears her mind wandered back to moments when she was a young child. She loved spending time with father. He was as consumed with her as she was with him. But Natalia had stolen away one evening after supper when her parents were sure she was asleep to see her father once more before sleep. She snuck up into the loft of the barn and watched in amazement as he transformed into his Fae form. This magic was so beautiful, so unexpected. At four she did not understand, but she definitely never forgot that moment. Morath’s words brought all of the memories she had suppressed back to her mind.

She also remembered the conversation her parents had that night.

“Natalia could be the one,” her father declared.

“How can we ask such a thing of our child?”

“A war will come between our peoples if nothing is done.”

“I don’t like you doing this and certainly don’t want to see her involved.”

“If we stand and watch we are dooming her and her children to much worse. If this campaign to eradicate my kind continues to grow my kind will be exterminated or exiled.”

“I know Katoris! I have no answers!”

“I’m sorry my love,” Katoris said as he pulled her close. “If it does not come now I fear Natalia will face a day of great pain. As a father I just want the best for my child!”

“But is it best to lose you in a fight you cannot possibly win?”

Again, Morath held up a hand.

“I must ask for your patience Natalia. Yes, you will have your son, but right now the fate of all our people is in your hands. Your lineage has been kept a secret from you for the sake of your family but now it is time to tell you that your father was a noble Fae. Indeed he was my brother and would have ruled these lands if it were not for the human hand that slayed him.”

Natalia’s eyes darted from side to side, taking in the fae on one side of the great room and her stunned husband on the other. She shook her head violently.

“No. No. This can’t be true. My father was a farmer. A human farmer.”

She looked beseechingly at Yoran.

“He was. I swear he was.”

Natalia fell quiet, her hands twisting in anguish and tears spilling from her eyes. Morath reached out and stilled Natalia’s hands by taking them into her own.

“In your heart you know it’s true Natalia. Your mother wanted you to have a human life so she married your farmer father and they swore never to tell you who your real father was. You’ve known deep down that your children are different to those of your neighbours. They have abilities beyond those of humans, abilities that have never been nurtured, and now we have a boy who is destined to bring our two peoples together.”

There was a gasp from Yoran and Natalia’s heart clenched as she saw raw fear in his eyes. Morath’s voice came to her as if through a mist.

“It’s up to you Natalia. Daughter of my brother. Do you consent to share this child with all the people around you? With the Fae?”

“Silence!” Queen Morath rose to her feet, her voice commanding, but low. Those in the room–fae and human alike–went still, the tumult fading.

The Queen of Queens strolled forward past her guards and the humans to stand before the grieving mother. She reached out a gentle hand to smooth away her tears. “She is here because we summoned her.” Her nose turned to a sneer as she eyed the fae guards behind the grieving mother. “But her appearance is earlier than anticipated. No matter.”

Quiet murmurs rippled through the chamber.

“Of all of us, she is most wronged.” Morath said, turning to meet the gaze of each person in the room. “Her kind, our kind, Fate…all have torn and tugged her life asunder with each new day, leaving her to bear burdens not of her choosing. We have brought her here to decide the fate of our peoples, both fae and human alike.”

The murmurs erupted into an outcry, nearly obscuring Natalia’s gasp.

“My son….all I want is my son….”

Yoran’s expression faltered.  He wondered if this was another hoax devised to elicit the information that he was not at liberty nor the inclination to share.  But what if it wasn’t?  The newborn certainly bore the Sumner family resemblance with his mop of dark hair and the same rosebud mouth as his sisters.  As he looked at the baby’s perfect features the irony of such a symbol of innocence in this awful place was not lost on Yoran, and his heart couldn’t help but swell with love and protection of this little bundle.

Yoran was torn, and this was quite plain for all those in the room to see.  Morath allowed a swift flash of triumph to cross her usually beatific features.  Surely Yoran would have to speak now.  He would choose his own blood over the Establishment.  She stole a glance at the three girls sitting on the private bench.  Marci and Bethany were distraught.  Sian’s eyes were now flicking from her father’s face to the baby and back again, her earlier steely resolve seemingly wavering now.

Suddenly everyone’s attention was distracted by a commotion coming into the room from the direction in which the Officer had just appeared with the baby.

Guards were trying to hold someone back, but she somehow managed to wrangle through them and burst forward.  On seeing the boy she let out an anguished animal-like cry and lunged forward towards the Officer.

“Give him to me!”

Yoran and Morath’s faces bore the same aghast and disbelieving expressions, and for the first time ever their thoughts were the same…what on earth was going on and just how had Natalia got here?

Part 46 – Kai Damian

The delicate crown on Morath’s head and her gilded garments gave her an air of old-world aristocracy, of riches that the world almost forgot had once existed. The rustle of her long dress filled the hall as she sat on her throne and gazed upon her subjects with gentle, yet inquisitive eyes.

“Be seated, my kin,” she ordered, and her subjects complied. “Today’s gathering is long overdue. We have been suffering for far too long. Our freedom has been taken from us, and along with it, our dignity and safety.”

Vigorous nods and shouts of approval from around the room accompanied her words. “It’s time we regained our rightful place in the kingdom of Argot,” Morath declared. “It’s time for justice.” Her subjects’ voices became loud and angry, but the shouts ended as soon as Morath lifted her right hand to ask for silence. “Our kind of justice, not theirs.”

She paused and smiled at Yoran’s girls, who were sitting together to her side. Tears were streaming down Marci’s face, and Bethany, too, appeared on the verge of crying. Only Sian sat defiant, her eyes cold and unmoved.

Then Morath turned her attention to Yoran.

“Protector Sumner. Some would argue—most, in fact—that you don’t even deserve to be in this room. That your actions have already condemned you to the pits of hell, and there’s no need for us to review the past. But I believe in justice. And I believe, unlike you, that everyone should be given an opportunity to explain their actions. Including you, a man who has spent his life trying to eradicate our kind from the face of Argot.”

Yoran watched Morath with disgust. “I don’t need your filthy justice,” he shouted, followed immediately by fiery protests from the audience.

“Daddy, please,” Marci cried, her words lost in the cacophony of voices.

“Silence in the court,” Morath’s voice boomed. Her eyes remained fixated on Yoran. “Want it or not, you will receive it, Protector. And all your children will bear witness,” Morath said and turned to face an officer of the court standing to her left. “Officer, bring the child,” she ordered, once again accompanied by murmurs.
