Using Audio for Editing with Melissa Crispin

When I go into editing mode, I try to find ways to distance myself from my words. I search for methods that will allow me to assess my work-in-progress in an impartial way. One of my favorite tools for this is the text-to-speech function on my kindle. I find it useful for different stages of editing.

Some of the issues it helps me to catch are:

  • Pacing – There may be certain spots I’ve read over and over again, causing my eyes to skim over the content. When the automated voice is reading for me, I can’t speed it up or slow it down. This highlights places that drag, as well as places that are missing an extra something.
  • Stilted dialog – If the robotic voice is reading a character’s dialog and it sounds like a robot, I know it’s worth revisiting.
  • Misplaced or missing words – When I’m proofreading a manuscript, I find the text-to-speech invaluable for finding these problems. An extra “the” or “a” in a weird spot, or a word that is absent from a sentence won’t get picked up by spellcheck.

I’ve heard of other people using a speech function in Microsoft Word for editing. I plan to try this out someday too. What about you? Do you have any editing tricks that may seem unusual or uncommon?

Thanks so much for having me on your blog today, Jennifer!

SCAVENGER HUNT Bonus Material
I’m Not Her

9468234“For the first time in my life, I didn’t feel envy…” Tess is the exact opposite of her beautiful, athletic sister. And that’s okay. Kristina is the sporty one, Tess is the smart one, and they each have their place. Until Kristina is diagnosed with cancer. Suddenly Tess is the center of the popular crowd, everyone eager for updates. There are senior boys flirting with her. Yet the smiles of her picture-perfect family are cracking and her sister could be dying. Now Tess has to fill a new role: the strong one. Because if she doesn’t hold it together, who will?

Bonus material! This happens after “I’m Not Her”…

Almost three years after I’M NOT HER is over, Tess is graduating from high school and there are a few familiar faces joining her….

GRADUATION DAY

Teenagers in navy blue graduation gowns are swarming the main floor of the convention center.

“I just wish Tess could have worn something a little more appropriate underneath the gown,” Mom whispers to Dad as we make our way through the crowded room, but of course it’s loud enough that I hear it. I think half my graduating class and their families hear her.

I glance down at my grad gown. Against my better judgement and motivated only by the desire to make my mom happy, I’ve given in to social protocol. Underneath the gown, I’m wearing what has to be considered an extremely appropriate dress by every mother in this building. I’ve also allowed her to drag me off to her hairdresser and my ginger locks are shiny and wavy, the way mom likes them. I’m even wearing make-up. With a sigh, I lift a foot and admire my shoes. This is what she objects to, but this is where I quite literally put my foot down. I have a suitable dress and fluffy hair but I’m wearing my purple Converse sneakers. In my opinion, they’re the most appropriate part of my outfit.

“You look amazing.” Kristina links her arm through mine and narrows her eyes in the direction of our shared nemesis. “She looks perfect,” she calls to mom and she overemphasizes the word perfect as she squeezes my arm tight. Kristina smells delicious of course, she always does. We stop walking then, halted by the growing crowd. Kristina lets me go. “The shoes are perfect, too,” she says quietly. Her eyes twinkle because we’ve grown pretty fond of abusing that word over the last couple years.

Kristina is even more startling beautiful these days. Her blond hair glistens and she sparkles in a loose short dress, even though we both know Mom suggested she wear a nice pair of slacks. The dress kicks ass though and also shows off her new prosthetic leg.

“You girls,” Mom says from where she’s also stopped, just ahead of us. She blinks quickly and wipes away tears, dabbing under her eyes to make sure her make up isn’t ruined. “Giggling together like you did when you were toddlers. You both make me so proud.” She means it too. That’s part of her paradoxical charm.

I feel a big hand sweep in and take hold of mine, engulfing, and swallowing it up. My heart beats happily as I turn and look up. “Superman!” I say. “Wow. You look amazing.” And he does. The blue grad gown makes his floppy dark hair look dapper and kind of polished. I swoon a little, even though he’s been my boyfriend for over two years now.

“Lois Lane,” Clark answers with a nod of his head, his eyes dancing behind his dark rimmed glasses. “You look pretty amazing yourself. Especially the sneaks.” He squeezes my hand and bends down and kisses me on the cheek. “But everything else too,” he whispers before he straightens.

“I tried, Clark,” my mom tells him. “I tried to get her to wear heels like a normal girl, but she wouldn’t give in.”

“Nor would I expect her to,” Clark tells my mom and gives my hand another soft squeeze.

Mom rolls her eyes but steps forward to pat him on the arm. She’s grown fond of Clark over the last couple of years. At first when we were just friends, she didn’t really get him, but he’s grown on her. I think even more so since he filled out and got hot. She tries not to care about things like that, but she is who she is, and she does.

“Oh, my God, Clark,” Kristina tell him. “You look amazing. You guys are so freaking cute together. Put your arm around her and stand closer for a picture.”

Kristina’s iPhone is out and she’s snapping pictures of us while Mom finds a friend to gab with and Dad wanders off in search of something to drink from the bar.

“Jeremy would have loved this,” Kristina says when she’s done snapping photo’s. Her eyebrows push together and the old sadness that she used to wear like a sweater around her shoulders appears on her face.

“He would,” Clark agrees and then he lets go of my hand and puts both hands around my sister and hugs the shit out of her.

“Hey!” A deep voice calls, powering over the buzz of voices around us. “You making moves on my girl?”

The three of us turn towards Adam, Kristina’s boyfriend who’s hurrying towards us and Clark lets go quickly.

“You know I can arrest you for any number of reasons in my profession,” Adam jokes. He’s a cop, but he’s sweet and gets extra points for being madly in love with my sister. Kristina met at a cancer fundraising event a couple years before. He chased her for months before she agreed to go out with him.

Clark’s cheeks turn a little pink. Adam’s part of our lives now, but Clark is still adorably awkward around him sometimes. Adam’s only about five years older than us, but he just seems way more grownup.

Kristina smacks Adam on the shoulder when he reaches for a hug, and he laughs. “I’m just bugging you, Clark, don’t look so worried,” he tells him and turns to me. “Tess. You look great!” He smiles widely. “Congrats on your big day, guys!”

“High school graduation,” I tell him. “So, it’s not exactly the biggest accomplishment in the world.” “Graduating near the top of your class with honors and however many academic and art scholarships you have, is though,” Kristina says. “I barely even passed my Senior year.”

“You were going through other stuff,” I remind her. “And now you’re halfway through your Journalism degree and on your way to other adventures, so I think you’re doing just fine…..” I roll my eyes to show that she is, as usual, setting the bar pretty high.

Adam puts his arm around her. “Beauty and brains run in the Smith family. As well as good taste in men.”

Kristina smiles at him. “Whatever, Charmer. This is Tess’s day.” She smiles at Clark. “And yours too.”

She waves her hand in front of her face then and blinks fast. “God. I can’t believe you’re moving to San Francisco soon, Tess. Art College.” She blinks away tears. “I’m going to miss you so much.”

I reach for Clark’s hand and squeeze it.

There’s an announcement over the speakers for all grads to report to the Source Room. “It’s time,” I say to Clark. I glance at Kristina, to make sure she’s okay but she’s smiling again and I know the bubbling over emotions are probably due to her pregnancy, too.

Adam reaches down and pats her bump. Kristina is young, and the baby unexpected, but it’s a miracle baby and everyone is thrilled. After her chemo and surgery, the doctor’s thought she couldn’t get pregnant and yet, here she is only a few weeks away from giving birth.

“I’m proud of you, Tess,” she says. She reaches out and hugs me. “You’re going to have an amazing time in San Francisco. But you better not leave until this baby is out of me. You’re going to be the best Auntie ever.”

I hug her back hard. I haven’t told her yet. That I’m not going to Art school after all. Everyone I love is right here in Tadita. In Washington State. I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about what’s important to me. And what I want to do with my life. And I plan to tell everyone, soon starting with Clark.

But not tonight.

Melanie McFarlane talks about what book is creepy enough to give an author nightmares

I have come to appreciate darker stories over the last few years. They suck me in and put me into survival mode in a way that no other book can. I can feel my adrenaline pumping through my veins as I duck and dodge each scene of prose, trying to solve a mystery in time and stay alive. There’s something deep inside of us, an instinct that keeps us going in even the most hair-raising of situations.

The one book world that I still think about was Dawn Kurtagich’s And the Trees Crept In (spoiler to follow). I was sucked into the world of the main character’s own madness, not realizing it was a world she created within herself until the very end of the book.

I was in awe. It made me want to write my own nightmare world.

I realized that an entire book can take place in the mind of a character, making me want to experiment with my writing. From there I started exploring short fiction (something I’ve never done before) to study the different elements of the world that scare us and the impact they can have in a short piece. I can’t wait to release these stories on the world.

I had already written Summoner Rising, but I was still able to use some of my newfound skills in the edits, bringing more fear and adrenaline to a scene. And though Summoner Rising isn’t necessarily a dark story as much as it is an adventure one, my new writing skills have definitely given it the edge it deserves.

About: SUMMONER RISING

28537447Law One: A summoner is responsible for all creatures it lets through from the netherworld.

Dacie Cantar wishes someone had explained the Laws of Summoning to her before she watched a shadowy creature crawl out of a painting at the local arcade. At least it explains the strange things she’s witnessed since moving in with her great-aunt, after her mother’s untimely death. But who wants to be followed by shadows the rest of their life? Add that to being stalked by a strange boy at school, who just might be her Tovaros (aka soulmate), it’s about all Dacie can handle in her new life.

As she nears her seventeenth birthday, will she be ready for her new responsibilities, or will the shadows that stalked her mother until her death, finally consume Dacie, too? And then there’s Law Two…

Ooo! Ooo! Pick Me! I Wanna be a Princess! – A Review of THE ONE (The Selection) by Kiera Cass

The One (The Selection) by Kiera Cass (Audiobook)

10507293This is Book Three of THE SELECTION series. In book one, 35 girls enter a competition to marry the prince and become the future queen. 16248068In book 2, THE ELITE the competition is cut down to four girls. In The One, those four girls battle it out, so to speak, to become “the one”.

I loved book one, and I liked book two. Book 2 started to get a little political, which I didn’t enjoy as much.

18635016While the politics are still there in book 3, the author manages to make it a little more fun again, with a fluffy feel that I enjoyed so much in Book 1.

The author never tried to keep it a secret who would win this competition, but the ending of The One managed to surprise me. In some cases, I was disappointed. In some cases, I was shocked. I think some of my shock came from knowing there were two more books. Too much seems to have ended here for two more books, and I wonder if the author intended to finish the series here, but got cajoled into writing two more.

Anyway, there is no real reason to read the next two books after The One. This book definitely has a feeling of “The End”. And where I was disappointed in part of that ending, I won’t let the last 20 pages of the book ruin how much I enjoyed the ride to get there. And, yes, I will probably pick up the next two books. I’m curious if the author will be able to keep the momentum going in this wildly entertaining world, or if it will run dry now that “The Selection” part of the world is over.

Spending the day with a few thousand kids… My thoughts on the grand adventure called the South Eastern YA Book Festival @seyabookfest

A few weeks ago, I attended the Southeastern YA Book Festival in Murfreesboro Tennessee. This is a fantastic teen-centric event that takes place over three days.

I was a little nervous heading out there, to be honest. I had to fly to get to TN, and after being disappointed by the turnout and/or engagement at most book festivals, I was very worried that this would not be worth the time and expense. What I found when I got there, was the most well-run and considerate event I’ve ever attended.

Arrival:

A bubbly, friendly SE-YA advocate Emily picked me up at the airport and drove me to my hotel. My hotel room was ready with a comfy bed, and a bad of goodies to make me feel at home after a long day of traveling.

 Day One:

After breakfast at the hotel, Lovely book-lover Marcia picked author Mindee Arnett and I up and brought us to Siegel High school, where the school librarian, Deborah, introduced us to two separate groups of about 100 kids each. What a wonderful morning speaking to the kids, answering questions, and signing books. Then we sat back and relaxed and enjoyed a delicious lunch with the library staff and our driver before we were whisked back to our hotel for a nap. Dinner ended up being a big social affair. With 30 authors all staying in the same hotel, there were plenty of opportunities to make connections and meet new friends.

Day Two (AKA Holy Toledo!)

Day two was the official kick off of the SE-YA book fest. I wasn’t nervous until our driver pulled into the campus of Middle Tennessee State University, and I saw roads closed and cops directing traffic, and school busses (many school busses) unloading.

I think someone said 2000 kids were bussed in from schools all over Tennessee. Let me tell you, saying 2000 kids, and SEEING 2000 kids are two very different things.

After light refreshments in the green room, we were assigned a “whisker” whose job was to make sure we got to our events on time (sooooo helpful). I spoke on a panel in the morning in front of a crowd of 400 (I think, I didn’t count) kids. What a rush!

Then it was off to the bookstore, where the real mayhem began. The kids were so excited, and there were so many! I took some 30 second breaks in between signing posters, books, t-shirts, Tupperware, and even people’s arms. It was an unending line of happy, excited kids.

So much fun!

After that we were whisked back to the green room for lunch, followed by another panel of 400-ish kids and another book signing. What a jam-packed day!

I have never seen so many kids excited about reading. Hats off to the schools for keeping reading alive in Tennessee! That night, there was a lovely reception to honor the volunteers, which gave the authors and volunteers time to sit and chat and enjoy some great food. It was a really nice evening.

Day Three (Ummm, Snow?)

Yup, snow. Kinda stinky since our whiskers had to whisk us between buildings that were pretty far away. Luckily enough, my whisker had a golf cart. I felt bad for everyone who had to walk between buildings but I was totally blessed with the transport. I was not prepared for snow whatsoever! I think our 9:00 panel was a little effected by the snow. I think there were about 25 people attending, but no worries! The Sci-Fi Fantasy panelists were ready to rock, and we had a great time.

I think this was the most fun I’ve ever had on a panel. Then we were whisked off again back to the bookstore for another signing, then lunch, then a second panel, second signing, then back home where I collapsed on the bed and took a nap for an hour before the dinner frivolity started. Dinner was a great time to meet up and make friends with authors and discuss how much fun we all had during the day.

Day Four: Traveling home

It wasn’t until the plane ride home until I was really capable of taking stock and absorbing all that had happened. This was an amazing event, and for the first time in my life, I told my husband:

“Wow, I would not even hesitate if someone asked me to do this again.”

Thank you to all the volunteers who put together this wonderful event.

SE-YA ran like a well-oiled machine. I find it hard to believe that this was only your second year. You guys made this look so effortless, but I have been to enough events to know HOW MUCH EFFORT goes into making something look that easy. You opened up the world of reading to thousands of kids.

SE-YA, this is an event you should all be extremely proud of.

Bring on the POWER OF SIX – A review of book 2 in the Lorian Legacies

The Power of Six by Pittacus Lore (Audiobook) This is the second book in the Lorian Legacies series. In book one, we met up with Number Four, who was 8659601marked next in line to die after the bad guys killed numbers one through three. At the end of book one, Four met up with Number Six.

In book two, we continue our story with Four and Six as they run from the human police who think they are terrorists, while still hiding from the alien bad guys.

We are also transported to Spain to see what’s going on with another Lorian in hiding.

This book really amps up the action, and places some pretty high expectations on book three, because we know all these kids are going to meet up soon, and the bad guys are going to throw some pretty heavy mojo at them. I liked this book a lot, and am once again looking forward to book three.

What is Jamie Zakian’s Writing Nemesis? @demoness333

There are many aspects to writing a novel that are extremely difficult. For me, the biggest obstacle to overcome—my true nemesis—is doubt. Writing is an art form and art is subjective. You never know if people will connect with your words, characters, storylines. As a writer, you need to become accustom to rejection. You’re rejected during the querying stage, once published you’re rejected for book reviews, sometimes your own publisher rejects future scripts, and often times there’s no explanation as to why. The uncertainty of whether your writing is to blame creates huge barriers of self-doubt. This doubt often hinders my creative flow, especially when I’m trying to start a new manuscript. Luckily, I have an amazing critique partner who is not only extremely patient when dealing with my many freak-outs, but very supportive and encouraging. If not for being able to share my failures and successes with a fellow writer who totally gets it, I might have fallen victim to the doubt monster.

If you  haven’t yet heard about this wonderful book by Author Jamie Zakian, be sure to  check out all the details below.

Secrets of a Reluctant Princess with Casey Griffin

Author Casey Griffin is here with us today! So, Casey, have you ever been a reluctant princes?

In grade eleven, I enrolled in Stagehand class as an elective. I was pretty quiet, insecure, and I didn’t like to get put on the spot in school, so hiding behind the scenes seemed like the perfect place. I didn’t even make it through one class before I realized it wasn’t for me. (I’m not the handiest girl—what was I thinking?)

My teacher, Mrs. Jansen, who also taught Drama class during the same period, encouraged me to simply switch over to acting and give that a try. Ummm… Crawl out from backstage and into the limelight? It didn’t get any worse. I wasn’t just reluctant. I thought she was crazy. Me? In the spotlight? Ha!

PKO_0005301But my teacher wouldn’t take no for an answer, so I humored her and sat in on one class…and then the next. And I’m so happy she pushed me, because soon I was in every production I could be in, performing in front of the entire school, teachers, and parents. I won school awards for drama. Heck, I got the lead roles normally reserved for students in grade twelve. I was even voted “The actress” in the yearbook.

But it was so much more than that. My drama experience for the remainder of high school raised my confidence, brought me out of my shell, gave me the courage to stand up in front of others, and helped me find myself. I might have been reluctant at first, but in the end, I felt like Mrs. Jansen helped me blossom into a princess.

Awwww… Love this story. Thanks Casey!

Dabbling in Sports Romance – For Women with @JulieCross1980

Sports themed books, movies, and TV shows have always been a love of mine–with or without romance (though a love story is always a plus). Surely I’m not the only female who feels this way? And although Off the Ice features ice hockey, I have written another YA that features a female elite gymnast, another with a ballet dancer, and in my YA novel Whatever Life Throws at You my main character, Annie, is a long distance runner for her high school track team. I really enjoy writing female athletes as well as the boys from Juniper Falls in Off the Ice.

The knowledge of a sport is generally not required to enjoy a fictionalized story that revolves around athletics. In fact, readers with extensive knowledge of a sport can ruin a fictional story featuring the sport of their expertise because authors often take liberties with rules and details to be able to tell the most interesting story.

What attracts me to reading and writing sports themed stories is that they often feature very driven characters who take action without hesitation. Who wants to read about a protagonist that complains all the time but never does anything? Not me. These driven athletes often have very clear, easy to follow goals–win the match, run faster, jump higher, etc…additionally these goals can create intriguing conflict when something (or someone) becomes nearly as important to them as their beloved sport. Another wonderful aspect of sports themed stories is the community often created either within an athlete’s’ team or the town or fans supporting the team. Everyone wants to see the underdog take the win and when they do, the warm fuzzies are plentiful.

25538649Claire O’Connor is back in Juniper Falls, but that doesn’t mean she wants to be. One semester off, that’s what she promised herself. Just long enough to take care of her father and keep the family business—a hockey bar beside the ice rink—afloat. After that, she’s getting the hell out. Again.

Enter Tate Tanley. What happened between them the night before she left town resurfaces the second they lay eyes on each other. But the guy she remembers has been replaced by a total hottie. When Tate is unexpectedly called in to take over for the hockey team’s star goalie, suddenly he’s in the spotlight and on his way to becoming just another egotistical varsity hockey player. And Claire’s sworn off Juniper Falls hockey players for good.

It’s the absolute worst time to fall in love.

For Tate and Claire, hockey isn’t just a game. And they both might not survive a body check to the heart.

This might be the best book I’ve ever read-A Review of Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff (Ebook, Audiobook, and Hard Cover) I picked up this book because I’ve heard a lot of talk about it, 23395680despite not being fond of one of the book’s authors. I never in a million years expected to like it so much.

I started reading in ebook format, but quickly realized that you really can’t read this in ebook. Well, maybe if you downloaded it on your television so you can make it really big.

Illuminae suffers from the same problem that comics and graphic novels do on ebook… it just does not work for me, because Illuminae is very graphics-intense. There are pictures of the ships, blood splatter on the documents, and graphic representation of madness. It is one thing to know that your character is on level 130 of a ship, with the bad guys on specific floors. It is completely another thing to see the actual picture of the ship the character is looking at, knowing she is the white circle in the engine room, and the bad guys are the stars ALL OVER THE FREAKING SHIP.

Yeah – the pictures are important.

Now, you’ll notice that I list ebook, audiobook, and hard cover as my method of reading Illuminae. At first I didn’t “get” the whole graphics thing, so I switched to audio book. But I found myself referring back to the hard copy daily to help fully 23395680immerse myself in the story. For me, this was wonderful because I could hear the character’s voices. I could hear the beep in the background, counting down the arrival of the ship that was chasing them, I could hear the banter of the fighter pilots in their own voices, and I could hear the screams of the “bad guys” running through the ship. Then, I would go to the text and see how the computer saved this information for later review, which was a treat in itself.

I think reading and listening definitely enhanced my enjoyment, because I’m not sure I would have read every word on the high-graphic pages, and thus I would have missed out on the story. Right now, writing this review in January 2017, this book is in contention for best of the year, and is probably in the top ten books I’ve ever read. If you decide to give this a try, don’t bother with ebook. It does not work. If you read in paperback/hardcover, make sure you read every word on the page, even the little sticky notes. They are there for a reason. And when the nutty computer draws shapes with words… read the words. If you don’t you will miss out. If you listen on audio book, get a copy of the paperback to read along. You really need to see the pictures. And the pictures are also a clue to a HUGE plot twist that I did not see coming, but made sense when I went back and looked at the graphics.

So, yeah, Illuminae… it is a multi-media experience. I HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend this one.
