Write a Story with Me # 35 – In the Sky Above by Susan Roebuck

Susan Rocan fills in a little space that was left hanging.  Take it away, Susan!

35 – Susan Roebuck – Battle string – in the sky – fills space before #29

Janosc’s squadron dodged cumulus clouds, flying through the chaos.

They observed Marci’s ship and the Establishment shuttle that thought it was invisible. Wing-commander Briss drew level with Janosc.

“Captain,” he said, “The old ship is off course, it’s entering the Atom Stream and getting too close to the Establishment shuttle which is equipped with a lock-on and destroy system in such cases.”

No sooner were the words out of his mouth than the Shuttle opened fire.

“Fangs out!” Janosc cried, pointing his sword downwards. “Dog-fight.”

It was too late – the blast had broken Marci’s ship apart. “Idiotic shuttle. Inexperienced…” To his horror, Marci’s bed with Bethany hanging on for dear life was heading for the ocean. Magic was the only option. He pulled the speaker on his helmet closer and ordered his squadron: “Bubble. Bubble. Marci and bed. Repeat. Marci and bed. Get her to the Precipice and the Portal home, boys.”

As the force of their combined magic curved downwards, Janosc cursed. “Damn cones!” He should’ve brought more experienced magicians with him; apart from Briss they were greenhorns. “Too much magic,” he cried.

A rainbow-colored bubble formed around Marci’s bed, but extended onwards encompassing Yoran’s falling body as well. And that wasn’t all. “It’s caught the Establishment ship too! Now they’ll all be transported to the mystic portal. Can it get worse?”

Briss’s calm voice spoke in his ear. “Black object, Captain, speeding our way. Four o’clock. Looks like someone on a broomstick.”

Janosc closed his eyes. That’s all he needed. Mother.

Write a Story with Me # 34 – Where is my family? by Siv Maria Ottem

Last week Morana stole the baby.  Oh no!  Such intrigue!  Let’s see where we end up this week!

34- Siv Maria Ottem – Where is my family?

Natalia awoke to the warmth of the sun shining on her face. Slowly she opened her eyes and looked around her familiar bedroom. It felt as if she had been asleep for years. In a dreamlike state she put her hands on her flat belly and in a panic jumped out of bed.

“Now, now, no need to worry,” said an old woman as she entered the room with a tray of food. “Your child is quite safe for now. You had a beautiful and healthy baby boy.” Natalia rubbed her empty belly and sat down on the side of her bed. “I don’t remember anything. Who are you and how long have I been unconscious? What happened and where is my baby?” The last part of her question came out as a small sob and tears started to roll down her cheeks. “My husband and my children, why are they not here beside me? Please bring them to me.”

The old woman put the tray of food down beside the bed and tried to reassure Natalia. “My name is Morana and I helped you deliver your baby last night. I have seen nothing of your family but I am sure they will return shortly. You will see your baby soon, but now you must rest dear.” Morana slipped some sleeping powder into the woman’s tea without her seeing it and handed her the cup. “Drink this, you will feel much better.” Natalia took a small sip from the cup then slid back under her blanket and closed her heavy eyelids.

Morana needed to find out what had happened to the woman’s family and she knew just the fairy to ask.

Write a Story with Me # 33 – What? OH NO! She didn’t! by Danielle Ackley McPhail

Last week Janelle took off — literally, leaving the old lady with Mommy bleeding to death and in a ton of trouble.  What’s gonna happen?  Here’s Danielle Ackley McPhail’s first contribution to our story!

33- Danielle Ackley McPhail – Wait, she’s who?  What?  OH NO!  She didn’t!

Morana watched her unsuspecting daughter go, her lips tightly set and her eyes sad. She remembered more than a time before the faeries were looked on as vermin…she remembered when they had been kin with humans. When all kind were linked and not separate.

How dark and grim the world had become since that time.

With a sigh she turned back to her patient. Poor Natalia, forsaken by all and sundry; all but Morana, and now that the last witness was gone it was time to see to mother and babe.

Queen Morath of the fae shed the weight of her borrowed years, shed her human form, the aches and pains and the blurring of her eyes. All fell away like flakes of skin to dust leaving the most beautiful and powerful of fae standing over the human woman, who sprawled upon the floor in her own blood, the babe’s cord still trailing from her body, wet and glistening.

“tsk…let’s clean you up, my lovely, shall we?” Nearer to human height than the diminutive size the fae had become in the after-time, Morath bent gracefully down, folded the delicate membranes of her wings back and safely away from the mess on the floor before reaching out one ivory-pale hand to trail through Natalia’s hair and down the curve of her back. Magic sparkled in the air at the touch as like recognized like deep within the two races now drastically different. Queen of life and death as well as fae, Morath ordered the woman’s lifeblood back within the confines of her veins and wicked away both sweat and blood normal to the birthing of children, and with it the memory of that night’s ordeal…all of it. Natalia remain unconscious—blessedly so—as the faerie queen scooped up the woman’s son to cradle in immortal arms.

The child cooed and burbled, making the faerie queen laugh before she grew somber once more. “Come, Verval. For your own safety and theirs, you need be the price for my healing.”
And Morath rose in a cloud of glittering motes, secreting the foretold boy away before any harm might come to him or his parents for bearing him.

Write a Story With Me #32 – Janelle’s Choice with Shannon Christensen

Last week the baby finally arrived, but it looks like Mommy is in big trouble!  Will she be okay?  Let’s find out!

Take it away Shannon!

32- Shannon Christensen

Janelle hesitated.

If she followed Morana’s instructions to get help, Natalia might live and the boy might grow up healthy, wealthy, and destructive. This baby could destroy them all – fairies and humans, regardless of Janelle’s help.

She considered this. The boy could turn out to be like Marci, and could be helpful to Janelle’s people. Then again, maybe not. If he were more like Bethany, then all the risks and sacrifices made by Marci, by Sian, by Janosc, by herself and so many others would be futile.

She did not have to help. She should not have helped earlier by bringing Morana. Certainly, the humans would not have helped a fairy mother. She could simply leave Natalia and the boy in Morana’s care and let luck or fate have her way.

Natalia moaned again and Morana pleaded.

Janelle watched.
As a mother, Janelle sympathized with the compulsion to care for an infant. As Marci’s friend, Janelle sympathized with the potential loss of a family member. As the new queen of the fairies, however, she understood that her own feelings were nothing compared to her peoples’ needs. She had accepted this when she ate the leaf. She had not expected to have to act so quickly on this new prioritization.

Janelle sighed. She would do what was best for the many, and not only the few.

“No.”

“But, you must!”

“No. I must not.” Janelle turned and flew away from the house for the last time.

Write a Story with Me #31 – “The Baby’s Here!” with Sharon Manship

Last week Richard Leonard left us hanging mid-sentance.  How’d Sharon finish his rather cliff-hanger-like cut off?  Let’s find out!

Last week’s ending:

On the way back she would arrive with relief to find that Morana had made significant progress walking up the street. This continued for several shortening laps until, to Janelle’s horror,

Take it away Sharon!

31 – Sharon Manship

Natalia’s moaning and writhing ceased.  She went still.

Janelle darted back to Morana, who was now entering the house.

“Morana, you must try to hurry, something is terribly wrong!”

Morana stumbled up the stairs as fast as her frail body would allow her to.  Janelle was by now frantic.

“Please help her!”

Morana entered the bedroom and rushed to the limp body of Natalia.

“She’s alive.” she said, checking her pulse, “But something is wrong.  You need to get more help.”

Janelle hesitated…it was one thing to make herself known to a before-timer, but she knew that the Doctor would not respond well to even the sight of her, let alone listen to her.

“Hurry, the baby is here!” Morana interrupted Janelle’s thoughts.

Janelle returned her attention to the scene.  The baby had delivered quite suddenly and there appeared to be a lot of blood.  She had no choice, she must do all she can to persuade the Doctor to listen to her.  She flew swiftly in the direction of the Doctor’s house, ruminating over how she was going to achieve the seemingly impossible.

Morana meanwhile had her own, more immediate, matters to contend with.  Not less Natalia’s condition, who although alive had lost a lot of blood and was unconscious.  But also the baby.  It was a boy.  This did not bode well for Natalia or Protector Sumner.  This did not bode well at all.

Write a Story with Me Part 30 – To Janelle’s Horror “What?” – With Richard Leonard

Surprise!  I’m changing the day for “Write a Story with Me” from Tuesdays to Mondays.  Why?  Well, ’cause I can!  Here we go!

It’s been nearly a month since we saw Marci’s poor mom go into labor all alone!  Richard Leonard throws it back to  the birth string this week.  Will Janelle get help in time?  Take it away, Richard!

30 – Richard Leonard

Janelle was already out the bedroom door before realising the old woman was still fumbling for her walking stick. She watched helplessly as Morana shuffled unsteadily across the short distance from the bed to the other side of the night-stand where her walking stick rested, using the night-stand for support. Janelle’s mood fell as she realised how frail the old lady now was. Her magic could only do so much.

“I’m sorry, Morana. I wasn’t aware you cannot -”

“I can do this, Young Fairy. I must do this”, Morana said.

Janelle, said nothing, guilt building within her. To drag this weak old dear out into the cold night to help a woman giving birth seemed to be a cruel irony. Patience, Janelle, patience. At the same time she needed to hurry. The longer Natalia was without proper assistance the more dangerous the situation becomes.

Morana finally had the support of her stick and began a steady rhythm of shuffling towards the door and out of the house. Janelle, to ease her impatience and peace of mind,  would fly up and down the street and patrol the area while Morana hobbled slowly towards Natalia’s residence. At the end of every run she would check on Natalia through the window, carefully ensuring she was still in a stable condition, sometimes offering reassurance that help was on its way.

On the way back she would arrive with relief to find that Morana had made significant progress walking up the street. This continued for several shortening laps until, to Janelle’s horror,

Oh!  The mid sentance stop!  What a way to leave it.  Someone’s quaking in their booth figuring out what Janelle saw!

Write a Story with Me Part 29 – An unexpected Savior by Kai Damian

Surprise!  I’m changing the day for “Write a Story with Me” from Tuesdays to Mondays.  Why?  Well, ’cause I can!  Here we go!

Three weeks ago we left Janelle the Fae Queen while getting help to our poor Mommy in labor. Then we left them to be thrown back into the heat of battle where Marci is still tied to a bed with a huge cliffhanger!  Than Bethany fell out of the sky.  But is Daddy dead?  I can’t stand it anymore!!!!!!!

29 – Kai Damian – Battle String

“Marci,” Yoran screamed as he opened his eyes, but his cry was lost in the chaos that trapped him like a coffin of wind and fire. The ship was crumbling around him and his men were sliding down into the water, lifeless. Covered in blood and hanging by a thread—literally, as his jacket had hooked itself onto an open cabinet door—he watched his two young daughters jump off the ship and disappear into the tempest below them. As he reached for them, screaming their names, he heard a snap and started rapidly sliding down toward nothingness once again.

“Please keep Natalia safe,” he prayed, and closed his eyes, ready for the end. “Good bye my loves.”

“Not today” he heard a woman’s voice behind him, and felt her grab his hand and pull him after her. As he opened his eyes, he and his mysterious savior were free falling into the eye of the storm that had appeared out of thin air before the ship went down. All he could see in the midst of the gray cloud that engulfed them was long, red hair flowing behind a young woman dressed in a blue starship uniform. Their hands were welded together, and the moment he allowed himself to feel her grip, he knew. The pain of losing his eldest for the second time hit him like a boulder coming off a steep mountain and he lost consciousness once again.

“Daddy, daddy, wake up,” Marci cried. Yoran opened his eyes to find his two youngest daughters shaking his arm as they knelt beside him on the frigid marble floor of an opulent room open to the sky above. Behind them, with a stern look on her face and her arms tightly crossed, stood his stolen child, his beloved Sian.

Write a Story with Me Part 28 – Oh Snap! Who is that? by Julie Catherine

Yay!  It’s Write a Story with Me day!

Two weeks ago we left Janelle the Fae Queen while getting help to our poor Mommy in labor. Then we left them to be thrown back into the heat of battle with a huge cliffhanger!  Is Daddy dead?  Let’s see if we can find out!

28 – Julie Catherine Vigna – Battle String

She couldn’t tear her eyes away; willed the rust of bile down while bitter tears singed her hair as it whipped across her cheeks. Helpless and terrified, she watched the rain of bodies as they cascaded around her, desperately trying to keep her focus on the one that was her father. Something landed with a thump on the bed and bounced off.

Marci craned her neck towards the movement, just in time to see the hand gripping the bedrail. Unable to help herself she stared in horrified fascination, her heart thudding with pain and fear. Marci’s relief was palpable as Bethany’s toque appeared over the edge of the rail and she hauled herself up, battling against the strong winds that buffeted them both.

“Marci, you’re alive Thank God!” Bethany crawled towards her sister and frantically loosened the knots that tied her sister into the bed. Her eyes were huge and wild with fright as she worked feverishly at the bindings. She sobbed, clinging to her sister for reassurance as much as relief. “I am so, so sorry; I never meant you to come to any harm— I swear. Can you ever forgive me for my foolishness?”

Marci didn’t understand what Bethany was saying, but now wasn’t the time to ask questions. She was just happy to have her sister there with her. If they survived there would be time to sort it all out later.  And it was very likely they wouldn’t make it, for the bed was swooping down towards the icy waters at an alarming rate.

A raspy voice whispered in her ear; it sounded familiar, but she couldn’t quite place it. “NOW— JUMP!”

Write a Story with Me Part 27- Oh No! He can’t be dead! by Kate Johnson

Yay!  It’s Write a Story with Me day!

Last week Janelle the Fae Queen went to get help to out poor Mommy in labor.

What’s gonna happen? We don’t know because Kate Johnson is throwing us back into the heat of battle!

27 – Kate Johnson – Battle String

A sudden explosion jerked the ship sideways. Marci gripped the sides of her bed, grateful that she had been tied in. A terrible rush of noise filled Marci’s ears, and she gasped in fright. The ship bumped haphazardly, as though damaged, and she felt her stomach drop.

Shouts could be heard from the crew. Marci tried to yell for help, but her voice wouldn’t work. No matter how hard she tried, she was utterly voiceless. She tried hitting her hands on the bed frame, but the deathly shrieking of the engines drowned out any sound her little fists made.

The ship was falling. Falling fast. There was no time to think, hope, pray before the vessel shattered into three parts. Marci, still attached to her bed, sailed into the sky, tumbling toward the water. She cried soundlessly and clutched the bed in desperation. In her blurry daze, she saw the ball of fire that once was the ship. Dark objects dotted the sky before spinning to earth. Marci tried to keep track of something, anything, as she plummeted down. Finally, she realized the objects weren’t just loose shards of the ship.

They were bodies. Dead people falling around her like rain. Her throat clenched.

One of them was her father.

Write a Story with Me Part 26: Help for Mom with Susan Rocan

Yay!  It’s Write a Story with Me day!  We started back up Christmas Day, so if you missed out, hop on back to fill in the blanks.  That battle is still brewing… Enjoy the ride!

Now remember, we’ve got a battle on the verge of rocking.  Marci is tied to a table in her father’s ship, her sister is flying out in space, and the very lives of the faeries are on the line.  Mommy is in labor and in big trouble.

What’s gonna happen? Let’s find out!

26 – Susan Rocan – Mother/Birth string

Janelle had heard rumors that ‘the girl who brought us the leaf’ was in trouble. After completing her first round of queenly duties, albeit reluctantly, she now had the chance to slip away and see things for herself. If she could do something to help, she needed to repay her debt.

Heading straight for Marci’s window, she eased the unlocked casement forward just enough to squeeze through into the dark room. It appeared no one was home.

Suddenly, Janelle heard a moan coming from the parents’ room. She peeked in and saw Natalia on the floor beside her bed, holding her huge belly. Understanding dawned and Janelle hurried out the window to the home of an elderly woman down the street. Morana was old enough to remember the before-time, old enough to know the fae folk were not the enemy The Establishment believed them to be. She was also a midwife.

“Sorry to disturb you on this blustery night,” Janelle whispered in Morana’s ear.

The old woman rose, rubbing her arthritic joints. She reached for her glasses on the nightstand and peered at the glowing figure before her.

“What is it, my dear?” Morana asked in creaky voice.

“I need you to help someone in trouble and, please, don’t ask any questions or tell anyone what you’ve done.”

The old woman nodded as Janelle helped her into her cloak. With a few words, Janelle wove a spell into the fabric so Morana would not be seen by the night patrol.
