How a simple change of attitude can change your life. You cannot change others, but you can change YOU

I came across this training session today. Most of these things I roll my eyes at, but this one I thought was particularly good.  This is a segment of a seminar given by Zig Ziglar, who I’d heard of, but never listened too.

Now, to be honest, his method of presentation is a bit off-putting to me, so if the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, I suggest just closing your eyes and concentrating on what he says.

This is not targeted at authors. I think this can benefit many people in many ways.  The last 45 seconds or so, in particular, packs an extra-special punch.

This is about nine minutes long. I suggest taking a minute to listen. People spend big bucks to hear seminars like this, and here you have it for free.

In general, I am a huge optimist. I’m glad I can smile at how wonderful the world is when people around me are hemming and hawing over their rejections and writer’s block. Negativity loves company, but that’s not the company I want to keep. It sucks creative energy.

If I ever start to get negative, I’m coming back to this post to give a listen.

A positive attitude can snowball into positive results.

Give it a try. You may be surprised.

Apparently, I’m Weird. Who Knew?

Apparently, I’m weird. Okay, Okay I’m not talking about the little blue alien living in my computer. I’m talking about real-life stuff.

Have you ever had someone tell you that your life is implausible, and would never happen?

I’m writing a MG Contemporary, and to keep myself from going off the deep end and blowing stuff up, or having a sea dragon pop out of the ocean, I am grounding the story in my own personal experience.

This is how I found out I’m weird.

I have critique partners telling me that no kid could sail a boat on their own.

Ummm. Huh?

Sail Boat

Sail Boat (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

I grew up living in a house on the water. We sailed every weekend. We went fishing for our supper. My father loved the water and everything having to do with it.

We all learned to sail from the time we could walk and get a life-jacket slapped onto us. Now, that’s not to say that I, personally could have sailed a boat. I much preferred to catch fishies and scoop up crabs. But my brothers and sisters could sail, and not just small Sun Fish sailboats. Big sucker sailboats.  But apparently, my family is weird.

I was also told that a mother that is afraid of the water would not allow her family to be totally in to boating, leaving her discluded from family activities.

Ummm huh?

My mom could not swim. She was terrified of the water. Did that stop us from living five steps from a dock with boats? Umm, No. It was a very rare occasion that she would step foot on the docks, and even more rare for her to get on a boat, but she did it for my dad once in a while. (But he had to go really, really slow or she’d scream bloody murder)

So Mom and Dad were weird, too.

I suppose I am a product of weirdness.

Everyone says write what you know.

This is what I know.

But apparently what I know is weird.

Have you ever come across this? —

People thinking something you’ve written is implausible just because they were raised differently?

The view from the backyard. All the cousins playing

Yesterday I shared a video of my pup Chloe playing in the front yard with her birth mother.  Very cute.

Here is what the backyard looked like for most of the day. Eight dogs and a bunch of kids. I’m sure all of them fell asleep the moment they got into the car to drive home. Ah, family get-togethers. There’s nothing like it. 🙂

Those two smaller dogs are three-month-old puppies. They certainly hold their own, don’t they?

Holiday Get Togethers are For Everyone in the Family

You might think I’m nuts, but when I invited my family to my house for Christmas dinner, I had them bring Everyone in the family. That included everyone’s four-footed children.

Twenty-six people and seven dogs over 50 pounds each (except for the puppies) Yes, chaos ensued for a bit. But those pups sure did appreciate it. they had a great time, and my Chloe was sad to see them all go.

The nice thing was that no one had to rush home to feed their dogs or let them out. My yard may never be the same, but who cares?

Here is a precious moment that came out of the event. This is my Chloe taking some time out away from the other dogs to play with her mother, Mitsy.

Chloe is the silver with the pink bows.  And Yes, dogs do remember their birth mothers.

How cute is this?

Happy Boxing Day! Boxing day? What the stink is boxing day?

Happy Boxing day!

Boxing day means a lot of different things, all depending on where you are.

Happy Boxing Day jpg

In the USA, we don’t really call it boxing day, but it is the day you take back all those boxes to the store… the day you get rid of the presents you didn’t want (Yes, I am looking at YOU Mr. Scrooge!)

Ha!  The day after Christmas was the most fun for me when I worked in retail. I loved working the return tables.  The lines were always out the door, and the day just flew by (yeah, I’m weird that way)

I’ve heard that in Europe, Boxing Day is the day that servants get to celebrate Christmas with their families. It is an old tradition handed down from long ago. Since servants had to serve their families on Christmas Day, they took the day after off to have their own Christmas.  They called it “Boxing Day” because they frequently took home a box from their employer that either contained a present, or leftovers or other goodies from Christmas for their own Christmas take-two on December 26th.  Sounds like fun to me!

Anyone else out there celebrate Boxing Day? What does it mean to you?

Why do we put Christmas Trees up in our homes at Christmas?

It’s a given, right? We put up a Christmas tree hoping the Big Guy will visit. We put out cookies and milk, and carrots for the reindeer.  Oh, yes, we like to bribe the big guy with chocolate chips, don’t we?

But there’s a little more to it than that. The Christmas tree is an extension of an advent wreath. The evergreen branches are a symbol of everlasting life. The lights we place on the tree symbolize Jesus, the light of the world. So what is a Christmas tree, then but a big old birthday candle!?

In some cultures, the tree symbolizes life itself. It is the light of faith, hope and love.

So remember on this, one of the most holy days of the year, to remember what really matters in your life.

Peace, hope, love, family.

It is the season of giving, but there is no better gift in life than family. Call someone you love today, and wish them a Merry Christmas. Give someone the gift of joy.

And for those of you reading this over seas, serving your respective countries to protect the ones you love at home… an extra special hug.

We appreciate you, and you are missed.

Why do we put up Christmas wreaths on our doors?

Don’t ya just hate it when your kid asks you a question and you think, umm, because we do, that’s why.

I never remember questioning anything when I grew up. We just did certain things at Christmas. I looked forward to it. But I never really asked “why”.

Did you as a lot of questions, or is this just a quirk of the new generation?

Anyway, this is the reason behind hanging a Christmas Wreath on a door, courtesy of our pastor. (I’ll paraphrase)

A Christmas wreath, in essence, is an advent wreath without the candles. it is a circle–without beginning or end, compromised of evergreen branches.  It symbolizes God’s everlasting love for us, and our hope in everlasting life with Jesus.

Wow. Pretty cool, huh?

So next time you see a wreath on a door, take a moment to remember the true meaning of the Christmas season.

Merry Christmas

I got Attacked by a Turkey. Seriously! For-Real!

I swear. You can’t make stuff up this good. If I wrote this into a book, someone would whack me in reviews: “Nope, it would never happen.”

Well, I’m here to tell you, it did.  And I took a picture to prove it!

So this is what happened.  We were coming home from church and my son looks up from his phone (miracle of miracles) and says, “Umm, why are there turkeys in the road?”

Now, I don’t see the turkeys at first. I’m concentrated on the cars stopped on the other side of the road, but once we get a little closer I say, “It’s probably turkey vultures, I don’t think it could possibly be…”  Yeah, note the drop off there… as in not finishing the sentence?

That’s because as soon as I got close enough, one of the turkeys stopped attacking the car on the other side of the road, turned, and started attacking MY CAR.

Huh?  And, yes, they were actually TURKEYS. I was a little unsure until one opened up its tail-feathers like a peacock. I wish I could have gotten a picture, but I was too busy trying to not hit his mate with my car.

Here are the little buggers, on their way to attack my tires.

Turkey Attack Car 2013

Now, me and the lady on the other side of the road, lucky for these turkeys, were nature lovers, and were trying to let them pass. Of course, they did not want to pass.  They wanted to eat our tires. So we each took turns.  I would drive a few feet, and the birds would leave her car and jump over to attack mine.  As soon as she started moving, they jumped over to attack her.

Now, think this over.  I was leaving church, so there is a long line-up of cars behind me, and cars started lining up behind her in the opposite direction as well.  The guy directly behind her starts honking his horn.

She leans out and yells, rightly so: “Where do you expect me to go!”

Would you believe that guy tried to throttle around her, and actually hit one of the birds?

Big ugly stupid head!

Luckily for the turkey, he had a big breast and kind of just bounced back. (Ha!  The turkey, not the guy)

Finally I was able to get by.  When I reached the next light, the car behind me pulled up and said, “Can you believe that?  I got a picture, cause no one in a million years would believe we got attacked by a couple of turkeys!”

Yep, I agree.

But the biggest turkey was the jerk who didn’t stop. Big stupid too much in a hurry to enjoy nature idiot.

For those of you in the USA (Except for the guy who didn’t stop) Have a WONDERFUL Thanksgiving. And for those of you outside the USA, Nothing’s stopping you for giving thanks for all the wonderful things in your life, too.

And next time a turkey is in the road attacking the car in front of you…

Remember to stop.

What goes around comes around.

Get up off your authorial butt – #BOOKBLOGWALKERS

This week I signed up for #BOOKBLOGBLOGWALKERS. It’s just one of those fun author things where a bunch of people who don’t know each other root together to better ourselves.

In this case, it is to get off our butts.

I have to admit that I’ve gained nearly ten pounds since I started writing three years ago.

But guess what? Just walking for 30 minutes a day since October second, I’ve lost almost three pounds.

Isn’t that awesome?

I’m also getting a little help from home, because my peppy poodle is in on the fun. If I try to sit down now, she goes and gets her leash. Nope. She’s not going to let me get lazy… and if I try to stop walking after one turn of the neighborhood (about 1/3 of a mile, ten minutes) she stops and refuses to come in.

Nope… not messing with a seventy pound dog with attitude. Anyway, she’s right. Mommy needs to get up off her butt more often.

I have to admit that I missed October first due to “life” getting in the way, but so far, I’d say it’s been fun… and losing pounds just by walking… can’t beat that!

What about you? Wanna sign up? Come on, walk with me a bit. It’s easy, and you’ll feel better, too.

I Have a New Official Web Site!

Whew!  It’s been a long time coming, but it’s finally here.

For years I have been landing covetously on other people’s web sites. Boy were they pretty. “Someday I’ll have to get me one of those,” I said.

Not that there’s anything wrong with my blog.  This little baby has done double-duty for a few years now, and it’s done me well. (Except for that Little Blue Lady problem, but I’ve learned to live with that.)

Don’t worry, I’m not abandoning this blog.  It’s way too much fun. But now I have a place for standard web-sitey stuff… a place for readers to go to learn a little more about me (Without scaring them with my rants about writing)  🙂

So do me a favor and hop on over and let me know what you think.  I’d love for people to look at it on different computer monitors, and on their phones.

Click around and make sure everything works well, and then let me know what you think.

You can get there by clicking the “Click to Visit” button in my navigation bar on the top far-right hand side of the screen right below my picture.

Thanks!
