45- Julie Catherine Vigna

They were brought to the Court of Adjudication; highest legal court of the fae. Here Yoran would be required to defend human-kind on the charges of oppression and crimes perpetrated against the peoples of Argot. The second charge was against Yoran himself, high-ranking member of the Establishment, for the assassination of Morath, Queen of Queens of the Fae. At the end of what proposed to be a lengthy court session, Final Judgement would be pronounced, and the Ceremony would commence.

The outcome of the Trial would either bring human and fae together in everlasting peace, or would forever set them apart and commence the war that would surely bring total devastation and extinction to both their worlds.

Sian, Marci and Bethany, cleaned up so as not to disgrace the dignity of the court, and leg shackles exchanged for light but strong chains linking them together, were escorted to a private bench to the right of the Adjudicator’s Throne by Janosc.

Court attendants wheeled in the Defender Chair— Yoran’s wrists and ankles strapped securely to its frame and base. Marci cried out and made to rise from the bench, but was stopped by Janosc.

A gong boomed, the sonorous vibration resonating throughout the building, and the courtroom stilled. Everyone rose and bowed their heads as the Court Adjudicator swept in and settled on the throne.

Yoran’s eyes widened in disbelief and he rasped, “YOU?!!”

Morath, Queen of Queens of the Fae and Court Adjudicator, gazed directly at Yoran, her smile frosty and eyes piercing his brain with blue ice.

Sian awoke with not only a blinding headache, but with her whole body feeling as though it had been trampled by a herd of stampeding wildebeest.

She raised her head slowly and found that she was in what appeared to be a windowless dungeon.

The only light came from a small aperture in the damp rock high overhead.

She stumbled to her feet, only to find she was chained by her ankle to a metal ring set in the floor.

“Hello!” she called loudly, “Is anyone there?”

Groans came from the darkness.

“Who is there?” she cried, “Speak to me!”

She stared in amazement as first Bethany and then Marci staggered out of the gloom, both trailing chains from their ankles.

“What happened … Where are we …  How did we get here?”

The sisters all started asking questions at once, but none of them had any answers.

Nor could they recall exactly where they had been or what they were doing immediately before they wakened here.

“All in good time” came Janosc’s voice from the blackest corner.

He strolled into sight, gleamingly smart, smiling confidently.

“Please, tidy yourselves up, you look awful”, he grinned at the girls, “You will want to look your best, won’t you?”

Again the girls fired questions all at once.

“Where are we … Our best for what ….” and, from Marci, “Where is our father?”

“He is being prepared”, answered Janosc.

“Prepared for what?”

“After what happened? He is being prepared for the ceremony, of course!”

Yoran stared at the figure before him. He was not to be fooled. A beautiful woman she may be, but he had been long trained by the Establishment to know that these vile creatures often turned themselves into delectable beings in order to distract the enemy.

He remembered the knife in his boot. Killing this creature would be child’s play. Then, Yoran thought about the message about the tree’s power that Tangle whispered in his ear.

Doubt edged his mind, but he pushed it back. No, he had to stand firm. He had a job to do, children to protect. The message about the sacred gleaming tree was a hoax. The fairies were trying to manipulate him.

The only power he had for certain was waiting inside his boot.

“You’re the Queen Mother? The wisest of this…band of hooligans? I demand you release us. We’re being held against our will. And if you cannot, then you’re not as powerful or wise as they claim.”

“Your temper and your ignorance are what landed you here, Yoran.”

“Your people shot down my ship, kidnapped me and my family, and imprisoned us. You took Marci elsewhere and no one has come to help me with my injured leg.”

Yoran reached toward his boot, pretending to indicate a wound. Morath leaned forward to look at his leg. His hand slipped into the boot. He pulled out the knife and lunged toward Morath, stabbing her.

She crumpled to the floor, her beauty slipping away.

42 – Susan Rocan

The lad fearfully entered the confinement cell. The tall human male was an imposing figure, but he was the one to whom Tangle must deliver his grandmother’s message.

He took a step forward, drew himself up to full height, and asked, “Is your name Yoran?”

Yoran frowned at him. “Why do you want to know, boy?”

“I have a message for your ears only from our Queen Mother,” Tangle replied, barely able to stabilize his knocking knees.

“Your Queen’s Mother?” Yoran sneered. “Why would I want to hear anything she had to say?”

“Gran . . . I mean, the Queen Mother is the wisest of our people. She lived in the Before Time and is doing her best to avoid a war between your people and ours.”

“Very well, what is the message?”

Tangle motioned for Yoran to lean down and Tangle whispered into his ear the words his grandmother had told him to say. Yoran stiffened, the significance of the message striking him with the force of a knife to the heart.

Yoran glanced over at Sian, who had stopped pacing to stare at her father and the young fairy. She cocked her head quizzically. Whatever the boy told her father had obviously affected him deeply. There may be hope for him, yet.

When the boy left the room, a beautiful woman took his place at the doorway. Yoran did not see the gleaming wings folded against her back.

“I am Morath,” she said, “We need to talk…”

Morath came to a stop a few feet in front of the building. “I need you to do something for me Tangle,” she said.

“Yes of course Grandmo…I mean, Queen…I mean Queen Gran…oh dear.” He bowed his head and bit his lip. Morath smiled and knelt down. She took his chin gently in her hand and lifted it to look warmly into his vibrant blue eyes.  He met her gaze, and felt the color rising in his cheeks.

“My child,” said Morath. “It matters not what you call me, it matters only what is in your heart. Do you understand?” She kissed him tenderly on the forehead. Tangle wasn’t sure he did understand, but he nodded anyway. “Before I go into the building,” she said. “I need you to take a message in for me. Can you do that?” He nodded. Morath continued. “The message can only be given to Yoran, and you must give it directly to him yourself Tangle. That is most important. Can I trust you to do that?” Tangle nodded again.

“What is the message Queen Grandmother?” he asked. Morath looked around cautiously before leaning forward to whisper into Tangle’s ear.

“The sacred Gleaming Tree yields its leaves only to those who are ready to receive its power,” she said. “Repeat it exactly like that. Yoran will understand.”

“But I don’t,” said Tangle.

“No,” said Morath. “But one day you will. Now go in please, I will wait here. When you have delivered the message to Yoran, and only to Yoran, come back and tell me, and then I will enter alone.”

Write a Story with Me # 40 – With a Clap of the Hands – by Norah Jansen

Norah Jansen debuts to Write a Story with Me and turns a corner and starts heading our two strings back together again.  Take it away, Norah!

40- Norah Jansen – With a clap of the hands

Janelle clapped her hands together and a tall fair haired boy dressed in a multitude of colours appeared at her side.

“This is your eldest grandson. Tangle. Marci’s family is here in the Kingdom and Tangle will take you to them.”

Tangle smiled shyly at Morath. He had heard about his grandmother, the great Queen of the Faeries, but never thought he would actually meet her. Now he was going to be her guide and pride swelled in his chest under her gentle gaze. He hoped all his friends would see him as he led their Queen through the streets of Argot.

Morath felt her heart squeeze as she watched Janelle with her smaller children. They were all so beautiful and Morath had missed out on seeing them being born and growing up. Something else to hold against the humans if she dared to let herself go down that path. This wasn’t the time for hatred; there was a sliver of a chance that what had started out as a potential disaster for her people could be a turning point for both humans and Fae.

She nodded to Tangle to proceed and with a swift backward glance at Janelle, Morath followed her grandson through the streets of Argot. Not many of her people (and none of Tangle’s friends) were around to see their procession but those that were bowed low before racing away to spread the news of their Queen’s return.

Tangle pointed ahead to the large building in the middle of the square. Morath’s ears twitched with apprehension as they approached. This wasn’t the first time a human had been held in this building. She hoped the outcome would be different this time.

Write a Story with Me # 39 – Queen of Queens by Nicky Wells

Nicky Wells brings us back to the Queen and her baby.  What’s happening there Nicky?

39 — Nicky Wells — Queen of Queens of the fae (Baby String)

Morana waited until she was certain that Natalia was sound asleep. Once more, she abandoned her human body and emerged Queen Morath of the fae, hovering above Natalia’s sleeping form before casting a protective spell on her. “Sleep safely until I return,” she intoned solemnly.

Then Morath closed her eyes and stilled her thoughts, focusing every fibre of her being on Jenelle, tracing her very soul until she found her. “Take me to her, now,” she bid her brilliant mind and in a faint flash of ivory sparkle, she vanished from Natalia’s side.

Morath joined the young queen Jenelle at the hive, tending her own offspring and quite unprepared for the apparition of the Queen of Queens of the fae.

Morath,” Jenelle breathed, falling to her knees and bowing her head in the required gesture of supplication. “We thought… we didn’t know… where have you been?”

“My child,” Morath intoned gently. “Please rise. We have much to talk about.”

Jenelle lifted her head and obediently straightened her body, finally daring to look at Morath. “I have done wrong,” she murmured. “I can see it in your eyes.”

“You do not understand. Not everything is as you see,” Morath replied. “Yes, I am Morath. I am also your mother. And I am Morana, the midwife, the facilitator of human life. I have lived in human form for many years. I will explain, but first tell me — Natalia’s family. Where are they? It is of the utmost urgency that we unite them.”

Write a Story with Me # 38 – Being Prepared by Ravena Guron

Ravena brings us into the Fae Dungeons.  Will they ever get out?

38 – Ravena Guron

Yoran found his eyes drifting to Sian for the tenth time in the space of a minute. She paced backwards and forwards across the marble floor, her arms tucked behind her back, avoiding his gaze. She seemed to be waiting for something, but since she’d spat on the floor a few hours before they hadn’t exchanged more than two words. Marci had been led out earlier by a guard. And although Sian’s mouth remained in a grim line, she didn’t seem worried for her sister, which put Yoran more at his ease.

The fairy man had mentioned something about meeting their queen. Yoran licked his cracked lips and examined the dirt under his nails.. Why had the fairies saved him? Why were they treating him so well now? Why did they want him to meet their queen?

What did they want from him?

He had a horrible feeling, in the pit of his stomach, that he knew exactly what they wanted, why they needed him to be well fed and rested. And if he told them what they needed to hear, he would be betraying the Establishment. He would be worse than a traitor to his own kind.

“When do you think they’ll come for me?” Yoran asked Sian, his voice too loud, ringing out in the silence. Sian didn’t reply, but he hadn’t expected her to.

He could tell the fairies the truth. The real reason why fairies were persecuted by the Establishment.

He thought back to that moment, all those years ago, when he’d overheard the conversation which had set him permanently against the race of fairies forever. His heart began hammering at the memory, the old hatred coursing through him.

Vermin. Filth.

They’d given him a small knife, to cut his bread with. When Sian turned away, he slipped it into his boot. So when he met the queen, he would be prepared.

Write a Story with Me # 37 – Not so big now, are you? by Elin Gregory

I’m bringing it back to the battle string this week, ’cause that’s where the party’s at!  Let’s rock!

37 — Elin Gregory (Battle String)

“Good advice.” The deep voice boomed behind Yoran.  He whipped around, a painful throb in his spine making him gasp only to let out the air in a wordless yell of horror.
He staggered to his feet putting himself between his daughters and the – the creatures who were looming over him. Yoran was used to being considered tall, but their height, their width of shoulder accentuated by gleaming armour, made him feel small.

“Get away from my girls,” he snarled reaching for his holster.

One of the two darted forward, dragonfly wings opening with a rasp of chitin, but the other put a hand on his chest, halting him. Yoran’s fingers touched empty leather. The creature nodded then raised its claws to remove the bulbous eyed helmet. A man’s face, handsome, blue-shadowed at the jaw with black hair drawn up into a top knot. He
looked amused.

“I’m Janosc. My men and I saved your lives but we had to leave your weapon the other side of the portal,” he said. “Man, you’re on our ground now. Not so big, are you? Consider yourself to be a prisoner of war, which means you will be treated somewhat better than I would be if the positions were reversed. Now eat, rest, wash, for later you
will meet a queen.”

At a gesture more of the creatures filed in, slim, androgynous, fair of face, bearing trays of food and vessels of warm water. A luxurious imprisonment, then, but they were prisoners all the same.

Write a Story with Me # 36 – Daddy wake up! by Jennifer M. Eaton

I’m bringing it back to the battle string this week, ’cause that’s where the party’s at!  Let’s rock!

36 – Jennifer M. Eaton – “Daddy, wake up!”

Yoran lulled in and out of consciousness.  Echoing blasts of battle and the throttling of wind pummeled his mind.

“Daddy, Daddy wake up.” Marci’s voice seeped into his internal chaos.

Oh! What a foul ogre a mind could be, taunting him with the voice of his beloved daughter, when he knew she was lost.  The vision of meek, weary Marci falling to her death grated against his soul, tearing and ripping to the point of insanity.

“Daddy!”

Yoran blinked twice.  His eyes stung, accosted by the sunlight shining from above.  Heaven?  Was this the great light he was to travel to?

A dark figure blotted out the sun, a form not unlike a small girl.  “Daddy, can you hear me?”  Tiny finger grabbed his shoulders, and his body shook.  “Daddy, can you feel me?”

A larger figure passed through his vision, and his face stung as a cold hand slapped him nearly off the table.

“Let’s see if he felt that.” The angry woman’s voice sliced into his heart–the same voice he’d heard pluck him from the sky.

“Sian?” His raspy voice barely sputtered the name.  His eyes focused, and she re-folded her arms, her eyes hard and glaring, just as they had been the last time he woke. She was really there.  This wasn’t a dream.

Mustering all his energy, he pulled himself to a sitting position.  His head pounded as he reached out to his eldest daughter.

Sian spat on the floor beside him.  “Save your strength, Father.  You’re going to need it.”
